The hearing is now scheduled for Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 10:30-a.m.

Lawson is currently free on bond.

The 41 year-old Lawson has been charged with felony counts of conspiracy to deliver methamphetamine and bribery, along with misdemeanor counts of providing false information to a law enforcement officer, neglect of duty by a public official, and ingesting meth.

He has pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor charges, and has not yet entered a plea on the two felony charges.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck’s police chief is promising more information about a police shooting outside a motel.

Chief Dan Donlin says additional details about the shooting will be released Monday.   A male suspect was shot and wounded Sunday while responding to a call and was attacked by the suspect before he got out of his squad car.

Police say the officer was repeatedly punched in the head and had his eyes gouged. The officer tried using a stun gun on the man, but it didn’t stop the attack so the suspect was shot in the abdomen.

The man was taken to a local hospital. His condition has not been released. The officer was treated at the hospital for head and serious eye injuries.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A 62-year-old man indicted in a western North Dakota methamphetamine ring has been sentenced to six years in federal prison.

Kim Davis Johnson pleaded guilty earlier to conspiracy to distribute with intent to distribute meth. He is one of 10 people charged in the case.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that prosecutors asked for a sentence of more than seven years. Johnson’s attorney, Stormy Vickers, asked for five years. Vickers said Johnson was a middleman in the meth operation who set up the deals. Vickers said his client didn’t have money or drugs.

Johnson told U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland he suffers from drug addiction and mesothelioma stemming from working in mines in Montana. Johnson told Hovland he didn’t want to die in prison.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota University System chancellor says potential customers who are interested in teaming with North Dakota researchers on fields like unmanned aircraft are balking because of the state’s open records laws.

Chancellor Mark Hagerott told the state Board of Higher Education during last month’s meeting that some leading research universities are afraid to partner on projects because they fear the state isn’t doing enough to protect its data, especially in light of recent worldwide events involving the spread of information.

Hagerott, who was the focus of a 2016 open records dispute that was made public last month, says he was raising the point “as an open question” and the issue would be addressed by the board’s governance committee.

The Legislature recently passed a bill on protecting university research.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Adult education programs around North Dakota are dealing with a one-third cut to their funding.

Minot Daily News reports that about 10 percent of the state’s population between the ages of 16 and 55 don’t have a high school diploma or GED diploma.

State director of adult education Valerie Fischer says many people don’t understand how valuable adult education is.

Supporters of adult education programs say investing in them can lead to big benefits, since those with diplomas earn more and are less likely to rely on welfare programs. Adult education officials say the children of GED earners also tend to have better educational outcomes.

The funding cut has led to a decrease in programs offered at the Minot Adult Learning Center’s satellite sites.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The latest crop report from the federal Agriculture Department shows record soybean and sugar beet production in North Dakota despite a dry summer.

Farmers are expected to produce 256 million bushels of soybeans, up 3 percent. Average yield is down, but harvested acres are at a record 7.1 million, up 19 percent from 2016.

The sugar beet crop is estimated at a record 6.37 million acres, up 2 percent. Yield is down but acres are up.

The dry edible bean crop is forecast to be up, but the corn, sunflower, canola and alfalfa hay crops all are estimated to be smaller.

Valley City Mark Potts VCSU) ) – Valley City State dominated both sides of the ball Saturday afternoon as the Vikings rolled to a 58-0 shutout of Mayville State on VCSU’s Homecoming Weekend.

Valley City State’s defense held Mayville State to just nine total yards in the first half, and the Viking offense scored four first-half touchdowns to build a 30-0 lead at the break en route to the blowout victory.

VCSU improves to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. Mayville State drops to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

The Vikings set the tone early. After Mayville State won the coin toss and elected to receive, the Viking defense forced a three-and-out – one of seven three-and-outs forced by VCSU in the first half. Five plays later the Viking offense struck as Louis Quinones broke off a 49-yard touchdown run to put the Vikings on the board.

The Comets had seven first-half drives, but failed to gain a single first down against VCSU’s dominating defense. VCSU held Mayville State to nine total yards on 20 first-half plays.

Valley City State’s offense scored on five of its first six possessions. A Landon Arredondo field goal made it 10-0 and then quarterback Jalen Pfeifer capped two of the next three drives with touchdown passes to Jake Peterson (30 yards) and Eli Luna (32 yards). VCSU then finished the half with a nine-play, 65-yard drive, ending with a 13-yard touchdown from Pfeifer to Peterson with 17 seconds remaining.

The Vikings added four more touchdowns in the second half for the 58-0 victory.

Valley City State picked up 25 first downs and 546 yards of offense. The Vikings rushed for 273 yards on 47 carries, and had 273 passing yards on 24 attempts.

The Viking defense forced five turnovers – intercepting three passes and recovering two fumbles – and sacked the Comets five times. Valley City State did not turn the ball over and was sacked just once.

Quarterback Jalen Pfeifer passed for 242 yards and four touchdowns, going 13-for-23. Kiefer Langan came off the bench in the fourth quarter and threw one pass – a 31-yard touchdown strike to Marc Wagner. SWAN HUNTING

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A federal plan to let hunters shoot trumpeter swans has drawn fire from some of the people who toiled to bring the majestic white birds back from the brink of extinction.

Trumpeter swans have made a comeback thanks to efforts to reintroduce them. Now the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working on a plan aimed at letting hunters shoot them in states that allow the hunting of tundra swans, a more numerous species.

Officials say no state is proposing a hunting season for trumpeter swans. But they acknowledge the proposal opens up the possibility.

Brad Bortner with the Fish and Wildlife Service says the plan is mostly designed to protect hunters in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, North Carolina and Virginia who mistake a trumpeter swan for a tundra swan.

The Vikings knocked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers out of the game with a broken collarbone during a 23-10 victory that drastically altered the course of the NFC North. Smith had 1½ sacks on safety blitzes, a diving interception and two pass breakups. The Vikings limited the injury-depleted Packers to a season-low 227 yards.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Green Bay Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers could miss the remainder of the season with a broken collarbone. Rodgers left the game against Minnesota in the first quarter, and the Packers announced at halftime that his season is in jeopardy after the injury was diagnosed.

The New York Giants picked up their first win of the season as Jason Pierre-Paul recorded three of their four sacks in a 20-10 win at Denver. NASCAR…

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Brad Keselowski picked up the win he needed to continue his championship chances with a victory Sunday in a sloppy playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Keselowski passed Ryan Newman on the high side of the track to take the lead, and then used a crossover move to hold off Newman and Team Penske teammate Joey Logano to secure the win. It gives him an automatic berth into the third round of the playoffs, and gave Ford a season sweep of the four restrictor-plate races.

This one was not NASCAR’s finest day.

There were only 14 cars running at the conclusion, and only four were playoff drivers. The race was red-flagged three times for nearly 35 minutes.

It was Keselowski’s fifth career win at Talladega.

PGA…

CARY, N.C. (AP) — Colin Montgomerie earned his second PGA Tour Champions victory in five weeks on Sunday, a three-stroke win at the SAS Championship.

Montgomerie shot a bogey-free, 8-under 64 in his final round at Prestonwood Country Club.

He earned $315,000 for his sixth career victory on the 50-and-over tour, and improved two spots to No. 7 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings in the tour’s regular-season finale.

The 54-year-old Scot finished at 16-under 200. He won the tour’s first-ever event in Japan — the Japan Airlines Championship — last month. The Hall of Famer won 31 times on the European Tour and topped the tour’s money list a record eight times — seven in a row from 1993-99 and the last in 2005.

Vijah Singh and Doug Garwood each shot 66 and tied for second at 13-under 203. Corey Pavin was one stroke behind them after his 67.

Montgomerie began the final round sharing the lead with Phillip Price and Jerry Kelly. He had three birdies on the front nine before pulling away with five birdies on the back nine — including on the 14th, 15th and 17th holes — before closing with a par on the par-4 18th.

Montgomerie has said he hopes to be on form entering the Schwab Cup playoffs — which begin next week in Richmond, Virginia, for the top 72 players — after he started the season slowly because of injuries. He was sidelined for 2½ months in the spring by torn ligaments in his left ankle.

In world and national news…

KIRKUK, Iraq (AP) — A spokesman for Iraq’s state-sanctioned militias says they have “achieved all our goals” in retaking areas from Kurdish forces in and around the disputed northern city of Kirkuk. Ahmed al-Assadi says federal forces came under fire from “some rebels” after launching the operation early Monday and returned fire. He says the state-backed militias, known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, have not entered the city center.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — A 50-year-old man who lived in Minnesota is among the more than 300 people killed in a powerful bomb blast in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Ahmed AbdiKarin Eyow died in Saturday’s explosion. The executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations says many other Somalis in the Minneapolis area are still trying to find out if family members survived the attack.

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — Thousands of evacuees got the all-clear to return their homes after fire crews gained ground against devastating California wildfires. The number of those under evacuation orders fell from nearly 100,000 down to 75,000. Those who were allowed back into gutted neighborhoods returned to assess the damage and, perhaps, see if anything was salvageable.

MADRID (AP) — A top Spanish official has blamed arsonists for causing most of the 105 fires now burning the northwestern Galicia region, leaving four people dead. Regional president Alberto Nunez Feijoo said “Galicia is fed up” with being attacked by arsonists who make the most of weather conditions, adding that some purposely tried to cause most damage by targeting urban areas.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A key moderate Republican is urging President Donald Trump to support a bipartisan Senate effort to reinstate insurer payments. Sen. Susan Collins says Trump’s move to halt the subsidies poses an immediate threat to millions of Americans who now face rising premiums and lost health care coverage. The insurer payments will be stopped beginning this week, with sign-up season for subsidized private insurance set to start Nov. 1.
