JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) — The University of Jamestown plans to appeal a $210,000 fine for allegedly violating federal law relating to annual security reports.
The Clery Act requires colleges and universities that receive federal funding to give an annual security report to employees and students. It must include information on campus crime and efforts to improve campus safety.
The Bismarck Tribune says the case will be referred to the Department of Education’s Office of Hearings and Appeals. The university has said previously the alleged violations were “procedural or clerical in nature.”
The University of Jamestown is a private, nonprofit college with campuses in Jamestown and Fargo.
Valley City (CSi- VC Chamber) There will be a special meeting of the Valley City Streetscape Committee, Tuesday, October 24 at 7:30 am at City Hall regarding an expansion of the current streetscape project.
The main topic of discussion will be the proposal to widen the sidewalks. All business owners and managers are welcome and encouraged to attend and voice your opinion.
At the close of this meeting, a vote will be taken on the committee’s recommendation for this project, which will then be submitted to the City.
Litchville (CSi) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a man was injured Friday when his tractor was struck by a semi east of Litchville about 8:20-a.m.
The report says a vehicle operated by 49 year old Leland Adamson, of Sidney, Nebraska, was westbound on Highway 46. 40 year old Derek Jungels,of Kathryn was also traveling westbound in a tractor.
Adamson began to pass Jungles on the tractor as he attempted to turn south onto 116th Avenue Sotheast.
The semi struck the tractor in the intersection near mile marker 64.5. Jungels was taken by personal vehicle to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Adamson was not injured.
He was charged with passing within 100 feet.
The highway was blocked for a short period of time until the tractor was removed.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol. The Barnes County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger says he will plead guilty to drunken driving.
The 34-year-old Republican says he was arrested by the North Dakota Highway Patrol in Mandan on Sept. 30. A report provided by Rauschenber showed he had blood alcohol content of 0.206, which is more than twice the state’s 0.08 legal limit.
Rauschenberger called The Associated Press to report his arrest. Troopers say the case is still under investigation and it can’t provide details.
Rauschenberger says he showed poor judgment. He says he’s taking steps including treatment for alcoholism.
Rauschenberger publicly revealed his alcoholism soon after he was appointed in 2014 by then-Gov. Jack Dalrymple. He underwent treatment at a Minnesota facility that same year during a successful run to be elected to the post.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is calling on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to send more workers to western North Dakota.
The North Dakota Democrat says understaffed Farm Service Agency offices are dealing with an overwhelming workload exacerbated by a summer of crippling drought.
USDA has declared numerous North Dakota counties to be disasters, paving the way for a variety of federal aid. Heitkamp’s office reports complaints of wait times at the offices of a month or more.
Acting FSA Administrator Steven Peterson says the agency is committed to “prompt, courteous service.”
USDA in midsummer sent additional staff to help reduce wait times at FSA offices in McHenry, Mountrail, Bowman, Golden Valley, Hettinger and Stark counties. But Heitkamp says those workers stayed only until Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.
WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) — The Richland County Commission is paying back the Federal Emergency Management Agency for flooding projects.
The Wahpeton Daily News reports that the county will likely pay nearly $125,000 to FEMA that was allocated to repair township and county roads. The agency says it was excess money given to the county for repair from floods in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
County Emergency Manager Brett Lambrecht says FEMA originally asked for millions of dollars to be returned because some of the projects lacked the necessary permits, but the county has since fulfilled that obligation.
The money will be taken from county’s general fund.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Two men accused of ramming a private security officer’s truck during protests in southern North Dakota against the Dakota Access pipeline last October have avoided trial.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that Michael Fasig and Israel Hernandez each faced felony charges of reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. They’ll have those charges dismissed if they successfully complete probation on lesser misdemeanor counts of menacing and criminal mischief.
Fasig must pay $2,000 in fees and fines and stay out of trouble for the next year. Hernandez must pay $325 in fees, complete 50 hours of community service or pay $500 within a year, and commit no crimes within the next nine months.
A judge in July dismissed a felony terrorizing charge against co-defendant Brennon Nastacio in connection with the incident.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A search committee reviewing applicants for a new North Dakota land commissioner has narrowed the field to eight people.
The Bismarck Tribune reports the committee narrowed the selection from 32 applicants on Thursday.
The names of candidates were not named under a new state law that took effect Aug. 1. Interviews are scheduled next week.
Incumbent Lance Gaebe (GAY’-bee) was appointed in 2010 by then-Gov. John Hoeven and his term expires at the end of the year. He reapplied for the position.
The commissioner manages the state Land Department. The agency leases rights for grazing rights and rights to produce oil, coal and gravel from state lands.
The state Board of University and School Lands oversees the Land Department. Gov. Doug Burgum is chairman of the board.

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have hired Ron Gardenhire as their manager. as their manager. They say the former Minnesota Twins skipper has agreed to a three-year contract. He takes over for Brad Ausmus, who was let go after four seasons as Detroit’s manager. The Tigers went 64-98 this season, finishing tied for the worst record in the majors. He managed the Minnesota Twins from 2002-14.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump’s chief of staff made scathing comments about Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson, accusing her of grandstanding at a building dedication in memory of two fallen FBI agents. But an AP Fact Check finds that John Kelly misrepresented what happened at that solemn event. He says Wilson bragged about securing money for the building. A video of her remarks in 2015 shows she did not make that claim at all. Instead, she talked about her efforts to name the building after the agents.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is promising the biggest tax cuts “in the history of our country” following Senate passage of a $4 trillion budget. The budget plan lays the groundwork for action on a tax overhaul Republicans hope to push through by year’s end. They’ll now be able to get the plan through the Senate without Democratic votes. Also Friday, House Speaker Paul Ryan said the GOP was adding a fourth tax bracket for high-income people to the three already in its proposal.
ATLANTA (AP) — A new poll finds the slaying of five dozen people at a Las Vegas music festival did little to change American opinion about the nation’s gun laws. The survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research also found the country is divided over whether restricting firearms would reduce the number of such mass shootings. The poll was conducted about two weeks after Stephen Paddock fired on a musical festival in Las Vegas, killing 58 and wounding more than 540 people.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — White nationalist Richard Spencer was once an obscure figure in a fringe movement, but he has become a household name thanks in part to his infamous “Hail Trump!” toast, a videotaped punch to his head and the bloodshed at a Virginia rally where he was a headliner. But his notoriety far exceeds his modest following. Protesters vastly outnumbered Spencer’s supporters at the University of Florida on Thursday, his first campus appearance since the deadly clash in Charlottesville, Virginia.
