North winds gusting to 40 to 50 mph are expected along and west
of the Red River Valley Thursday into Thursday evening. These
strong winds will also bring down colder air, allowing the light
rain to mix with and change to light snow, especially Thursday
afternoon into Thursday evening. At this point, it appears that
most of the area can expect a dusting to an inch or two of snow
during this time frame.

There are other impacts to consider as well. Wind chill readings
are expected to dip into the single digits above zero by Friday
morning. Ground temperatures will be warm initially, but as air
temperatures fall Thursday night into Friday morning, and with
the continued gusty north winds, roads could become slick in
spots. Light snow falling with strong winds could also result in
low visibilities. Stay tuned for additional information on this
system over the next few days, but be prepared.

Warmer on Saturday and Sunday ahead of the next clipper system

moving through our area on Sunday night/Monday, bringing gusty winds

and chances of rain and snow showers.

Jamestown  (CSi)  Interstate Engineering in Jamestown reports, that the 5th Street Northeast project is in the final phase.

In his E-Mail Ben Aaseth said, “The concrete subcontractor is working on the final speed table this week. There will be work going on behind the back of the curb as well, I am guessing the road will be done and striped by the end of next week.  The top lift of the hot bituminous pavement will be on the final two phases next week.  The sidewalk and others behind the curb work will continue over the next three weeks.”

The $2.5 million project includes new curb and gutter and sidewalks on the street from 12th Avenue to 27th Avenue Northeast.

The completion date was set for October 15th, however,  the contractor says there was still some items that needed finishing.

Valley City  (CSi)  Valley City Public Schools Superintendent, Josh Johnson says, changes  at Valley City High School have been implemented with the bus loading and unloading zones.

The bus loading and unloading zone from the north side of the high school at 5th Street, to the east side of the high school on Central Avenue.

Johnson adds the change is being made to address safety concerns with student pedestrian traffic and buses leaving the high school. A bus zone will be designated on Central Avenue and vehicles will no longer be allowed to park in this area from 8:00am-4:00pm during school days. Those wishing to pick up or drop off students from the high School may do so on the north side 5th Street.

Johnson said parents and visitors to the Junior High School will see a 15-minute parking spot outside of door No. 6 on the west side of the high school building. He adds, the spot on 2nd Street. West is designated for parents and visitors that need to quickly run into the school to drop something off or are waiting for their student to come out. The reserved spot is only during school days from 8-am-4-pm.

Northwood  (CSi) – Farmers Union Insurance (FUI) reached an agreement with the Northwood Hockey Boosters of Northwood to secure the naming rights to their indoor arena. For the next 10 years, the hockey arena will be known as the Farmers Union Insurance Arena in this small community of about 1,000 people in northeastern North Dakota.

Sales and marketing manager for FUI Kevin Ressler, says,  “This sponsorship fits perfectly with our ‘Simply Different’ brand. ” It doubles down on our belief of supporting rural communities and the folks who live there. Because this facility is important to the community of Northwood, it’s important to us.”

A group of passionate leaders in the Grand Forks County town built the arena in 2014 through donations. Ressler said Northwood has a vibrant youth hockey program, and FUI lent earlier support to the booster club with a logo-on-ice sponsorship agreement.

Northwood Hockey Boosters, President, Bryan Brenden, “Farmers Union has really stepped up to the faceoff circle for us and Ice Storm Hockey.  The funds will allow us to continue to offer equipment, at no cost, to a majority of our hockey players and also focus on what matters – the kids in our program.”

Ressler adds, “I hope we can continue our commitment in the future, because that’s what really separates us from other insurance companies. Most major brands have left small towns and pulled their agents. We’ve actually increased the number of agencies we have in small towns to serve the population that meets our mission.”

FUI is also the premier sponsor of the North Dakota High School Activities Association, and the BEK Broadcasting Network which televises high school athletic competitions throughout North Dakota. The company sponsors numerous other sports organizations and activities. Last year, FUI purchased the naming rights to an expansion rink, the Farmers Union Insurance Center, attached to the Scheels Arena in Fargo, home of Fargo Force hockey.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A task force made up of representatives from Minnesota and North Dakota is meeting to talk about the stalled Red River diversion project around the flood-prone Fargo-Moorhead area.

The 16-member group organized by North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton includes elected representatives from both states and residents who live upstream and downstream from Fargo.

Upstream residents are suing over the project because they believe there is a better plan that won’t flood private land. A federal judge last month halted construction because the project does not have the necessary permits from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Burgum says the task force is “a talented group of people who are collaborative thinkers.”

The group has a Dec. 15 deadline to come up with recommendations.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Census Office says the state has the highest percentage of millennials in the country.

Office manager Kevin Iverson says many millennials moved to the state in the early years of the oil boom and have stayed. The number of millennials has increased in Fargo, Bismarck and Grand Forks where unemployment is low.

Iverson says  the age of North Dakotans is younger than the national average and has been since 2009. He says another result of a younger demographic is a big increase in the number of children under five, up 24 percent between 2010 and 2012.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles picked up their fifth straight win, but they also lost their nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle in the process.

Carson Wentz threw for 268 yards and four touchdowns as the Eagles overcame a poor start to beat the Redskins, 34-24 in Philadelphia. Wentz also had a career-high 63 yards rushing for the 6-1 Eagles, who logged just 57 yards on their first four drives before Mack Hollins hauled in a 64-yard scoring strike that tied the game 10-10.

Philadelphia finished the game without Jason Peters after he was carted off the field with a knee injury. Peters got hurt during the Eagles’ 86-yard scoring drive that opened the second half.

Kirk Cousins had 303 yards passing and three TDs for the 3-3 Redskins.

Vikings….

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has suspended Vikings safety Andrew Sendejo for one game for violating player safety rules in Sunday’s win against the Baltimore Ravens. Sendejo’s hit on Ravens receiver Mike Wallace on Baltimore’s second series of the game was directly to the head. Wallace’s helmet flew off during the collision and Sendejo was penalized for unnecessary roughness.

Oakland running back Marshawn Lynch has presented his appeal to the NFL as he seeks to overturn his one-game suspension for bumping an official. Raiders coach Jack Del Rio says he hopes to learn by Tuesday whether Lynch will be eligible to play Sunday at Buffalo. Lynch was punished for coming off the sideline during a scuffle in the second quarter and then shoving a game official during Oakland’s 31-30 victory over Kansas City last Thursday.

MLB-NEWS…

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Mets’ pitching staff was in disarray this season, compiling the third-worst ERA in the majors. General manager Sandy Alderson hopes to see improvement after naming Cleveland Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway as the 21st manager in Mets history.

Callaway spent the last five years handling Indians pitchers and oversaw a staff that led the majors with a 3.30 ERA and 1,614 strikeouts this year.

The 42-year-old Callaway replaces Terry Collins, who stepped down after leading the Mets to the 2015 National League pennant and two playoff appearances in a club-record seven seasons at the helm.

Callaway is only the third former big league pitcher to manage the Mets, joining Dallas Green and George Bamberger.

In other major league news:

— Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says he expects Corey Seager to be on the World Series roster. Seager hurt his back on a slide in Game 3 of the NL Division Series and was left off the NL Championship Series roster.

— Jake Marisnick won’t be on Houston’s World Series roster, although manager A.J. Hinch says the outfielder’s broken right thumb is healed. Marisnick hit 16 homers in 106 games before busting the thumb last month.

— Gerry Davis will serve as crew chief for the World Series. The crew will include Phil Cuzzi (KUH’-zee), Paul Nauert and Laz Diaz, along with Bill Miller and Dan Iassogna (eye-ah-SOHN’-yah).

In world and national news

NEW YORK (AP) — For more than 50 years, every American president has been forced to grapple, in one way or another, with the quagmire of the Vietnam War. Now it’s Donald Trump’s turn. The ghosts of Vietnam are stirring anew, just as Trump prepares to visit the nation on his first presidential tour of Asia. He’s facing questions about his own lack of wartime service.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say they’re preparing a recommendation for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to declare that “ethnic cleansing” is occurring against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims. The assessment would raise pressure on the Trump administration and U.S. lawmakers to consider new sanctions on a country that had been lauded for its democratic transition. Tillerson could receive the recommendation as early as this week. He’d then decide whether to accept it.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is planning lunch with GOP senators on Capitol Hill as Republicans in Congress turn their focus to overhauling the nation’s tax code. His visit comes as he’s sparred with several Republican senators, such as John McCain of Arizona and Bob Corker of Tennessee. Despite the tensions, most Republicans are hoping to unify over taxes.

BEIJING (AP) — A vast exhibition in Beijing places Xi Jinping at the center of China’s progress over his first five years as Communist Party leader. It coincides with the national congress, and the two events _ one teeming with ordinary citizens, the other enclosed by tight security _ show how Xi has centralized power and is leading China into a confident, gleaming new era. The approach seems to resonate with China’s public.

SEPANG, Malaysia (AP) — The Malaysian trial of two women accused of killing the North Korean leader’s half brother has concluded for the day after a visit to the airport where he was attacked. The suspects, the judge and others were escorted inside the Kuala Lumpur airport by armed police on a tour meant to give the court a better perspective of events as they unfolded. The trial returns to the courtroom Wednesday.
