Update…

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown fire department was called out at midnight Thursday night, to I-94 for a twin trailer semi crash at exit 260. The semi traveling east bound crossed lanes and collided with paving equipment in the west bound lane of I-94, currently being repaved. The driver was taken to Jamestown Regional Medical Center. The tractor he was driving was destroyed in the crash.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol investigated along with Jamestown Police.

The Highway Patrol reported slick roadways, due to drizzle at the time of the crash.

The Highway Patrol report indicates the 2016 Peterbilt  driven by 26 year old Steve Nelson of Bismarck was pulling two enclosed trailers, eastbound through the construction zone, when the truck slid out of control while crossing an icy overpass.  The Peterbilt struck a guardrail and jackknifed its trailers while entering the median.

The truck came to rest  on the westbound lanes after striking the mobile Slipform Concrete Paver.

Nelson  was taken to Jamestown Regional Medical Center, by Jamestown Area Ambulance Service with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol

Jamestown City Fire Department Lt. Sheldon Mohr says one fire unit, consisting of the Hazmat team contained the diesel fuel spill, damming the material until clean up.

One unit and five city fire department personnel were on the scene with 19 firefighters on standby.

There was no need for an extrication of the driver.

EDINBURG, N.D. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the cause of an early Friday morning fire that destroyed several storage buildings owned by a potato company in northeastern North Dakota. No one was hurt.

J.G. Hall and Sons partner Roger Hall says the company lost four buildings at its Edinburg complex, but none of them held any potatoes or farming equipment. He says the company’s main facility is in Hoople.

J.G. Hall and Sons is one of the largest potato producers in the Red River Valley of eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.

Five fire departments responded to the blaze about 4 a.m. Friday. They were hampered by strong winds. Hall says there isn’t anything to indicate the fire is suspicious.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) Vice President Mike Pence is vowing that the U.S. will keep up economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Pence spoke to airmen at North Dakota’s Minot Air Force Base on Friday. The visit marked the second by a top Trump administration official in the past six weeks. The base is home to both B-52 bombers and intercontinental nuclear missiles.

With a huge B-52 in the background, Pence thanked the roughly 250 assembled airmen for their service. He told them President Donald Trump is committed to maintaining America’s nuclear powers as a force for peace.

Pence’s visit to the Minot base coincided with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’ visit to the Demilitarized Zone that separates North Korea from South Korea. Mattis accused North Korea of threatening global order and said the Trump administration remains committed to compelling the North to accept complete nuclear disarmament.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The only shelter for homeless men in Bismarck-Mandan has closed after 30 years, coinciding with the first snowflakes of the season this week.

The Ruth Meiers Hospitality House closed Thursday. A sign posted on the facility’s entrance said residents were to evacuate by 7 a.m. or be charged with trespassing.

Advocates for the homeless lament the loss of what they consider an essential service for the community. Shelter residents questioned where they would go during the winter.

Interim executive director for Ruth Meiers, Steve Neu, says residents were made aware of the possible closure.

The facility opened in response to those in need of emergency shelter in 1987.

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says replenishing and sustaining soil health is a priority for him.

The American News reports Perdue toured the prairie pothole landscape in northeast South Dakota on Thursday. He said using soil health as a basis for federal farm payments might be a way to encourage farmers to employ more sustainable land practices.

Perdue says improvements in genetics and technology can help farmers improve soil health, which can increase their crop yields.

Perdue also met with Natural Resources Conservation Service staff from South Dakota and North Dakota, with improving the wetland determination process a main topic. Farmers have long been critical of the process.
