MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A Minot man accused of firing a gun at his girlfriend as she fled a home with her young son has been sentenced to serve 20 years in prison.
James Blue II on Friday entered an Alford plea to 17 felony charges, including attempted murder. That means he doesn’t admit guilt but acknowledges there’s enough evidence to convict him. The court treats it like a guilty plea.
The charges resulted from a mid-January incident at a mobile home park in which Blue also was accused of firing shots at police officers and assaulting paramedics. No one was seriously hurt.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says a closed-door meeting in Fargo that included Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt did not violate the state’s open meetings law.
KFGO radio asked for the opinion because two of the three members of the state Industrial Commission attended the Aug. 9 meeting and reporters were not allowed in the room.
Stenehjem says it was not a meeting of the Industrial Commission because it did not involve public business by the commission. He says the meeting focused on a clean water rule enacted during the Obama administration.
Stenehjem, who attended the meeting, says he told the two commission members at the start of the gathering that one of them would have to leave if any issues were raised regarding the commission.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A drain tile system that was built to bring flood relief to North Dakota home owners 6 miles northeast of Bismarck has other landowners concerned the diversion could contaminate groundwater on their property.
Alton and Arlene Nitschke are worried about the quality and quantity of water that could be discharged onto their land. They’re appealing a permit that the Burleigh County Water Resource District granted to itself for a drainage project meant to remove excessive groundwater from the Hay Creek Pines subdivision.
The Nitschkes say the groundwater has been polluted by coliform and other contaminants.
The couple owns about 40 acres of land and has lived south of the subdivision for 24 years.
TABOR, S.D. (AP) — A Hutterite colony in South Dakota has been lauded for its progressive style of sheep production.
The South Dakota Master Lamb Producers Association recently named the Bon Homme Colony top lamb-to-finish producer for the state in 2017. The colony was recognized for exceptional production and management practices in the lamb-to-finish category.
The colony near Tabor has embraced modern methods for its sheep production despite being the oldest colony in the state.
The colony operation consists of 1,000 ewes and maintains high quality standards, according to the association. The finished lambs are sold under packer contract, which includes financial incentives.
The association also says the colony utilizes electronic record-keeping and data analysis.
Hutterites are a religious group that grew out of the Reformation similar to Mennonites.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Agriculture Department is seeking participants for the third year of the state’s industrial hemp research program.
The goal of the program is to determine whether hemp can be a successful crop in North Dakota, and which varieties work best in the state’s climate.
Producers planted more than 70 acres (28 hectares) of hemp in 2016 and more than 3,000 acres this year.
Hemp fiber and oil can be used in numerous products, but production has been limited because federal drug law doesn’t differentiate between hemp and its cousin marijuana.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says growers’ proposals for next year’s program are due at 5 p.m. on Dec. 29. Proposals will be ranked by a committee appointed by Goehring, who will make the final choices.
MEDORA, N.D. (AP) — High winds have taken down the top of an old cottonwood known as a “hanging tree” in Medora.
A 15-foot-tall section of trunk is all that remains of the tree in front of Medora’s post office.
Ed Sahlstrom, assistant site supervisor for the Chateau de Mores, tells The Bismarck Tribune the cottonwood was probably the oldest tree in Medora and appears in photos from the 1800s.
There is no record of a hanging ever occurring in Medora, but the tree mistakenly became known as a “hanging tree” following the verdict of a controversial murder trial during wild West days.

A conservation group says no wild Atlantic salmon have returned to a key river in New Brunswick, prompting concern for the fish’s population health in the U.S. and eastern Canada.
The New Brunswick-based Atlantic Salmon Federation has been monitoring the Magaguadavic (mack-uh-DAY’-vick) River for the Canadian government since 1992. The group says this year is the first time that no wild salmon have returned to the river to spawn.
Atlantic salmon were once abundant in rivers of New England and eastern Canada, but they’re now endangered or have disappeared in parts of both areas.
The fish suffer due to dams, loss of habitat, pollution and overfishing. The U.S.’s National Marine Fisheries Service is reviewing the Gulf of Maine’s population, which is listed endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
World Series…
HOUSTON (AP) — Five home runs weren’t enough for the Houston Astros to take a three-games-to-two lead in the World Series, but an RBI single did the trick.
Alex Bregman’s two-out single in the bottom of the 10th scored pinch-runner Derek Fisher as the Astros outlasted the Dodgers 13-12. Losing pitcher Kenley Jansen was one out from retiring the Astros in the 10th until he hit Brian McCann with a pitch and walked Springer. Bregman put the finishing touches on a wild game in which the two teams combined for seven home runs, bringing their total to a World Series-record 22.
The Astros and Dodgers also combined to blow three leads of three runs or more. Jose Altuve (al-TOO’-vay) and Yuli Gurriel (YOO’-lee gur-ee-EHL’) each hit game-tying, three-run homers before George Springer and Carlos Correa connected in a four-run seventh that put the Astros ahead 11-8. A Brian McCann home run allowed Houston to carry a 12-9 lead into the ninth, but Yasiel Puig (pweeg) launched a two-run shot and Chris Taylor added a two-out, two-strike RBI single to force extra innings.
It was billed as a pitchers’ duel, but neither Dallas Keuchel (KY’-kul) nor Clayton Kershaw lasted five innings. Keuchel was pulled in the fourth trailing 4-0 after yielding three earned runs and five hits. Kershaw was tagged for six runs over 4 2/3 innings.
Winning pitcher Joe Musgrove worked a scoreless 10th to help the Astros get within one victory of their first World Series title.
Game 6 is Tuesday in Los Angeles. Justin Verlander is expected to start for the Astros. The Dodgers haven’t named their starter.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s national security brain trust is set to testify on the need for a new war authorization as the deadly ambush in Niger spurs a push among lawmakers to update the legal parameters for combat operations overseas. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will appear before the Foreign Relations Committee in an open hearing Monday. They told the panel behind closed doors three months ago that a 2001 law gave the military ample authority.
WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s sign-up season for the Affordable Care Act, but the Trump administration isn’t making it easy _ cutting the enrollment period in half, slashing advertising and dialing back on navigators who help consumers. Many people already faced fewer choices and higher premiums and other out-of-pocket costs. But President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel subsidies to insurers that lower consumer costs could cause lasting damage to insurance markets. Some are calling it a “hostile takeover.”

The two political parties in the separatist coalition that ruled until last week are holding separate meetings.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Kevin Spacey says he is “beyond horrified” by allegations that he made a sexual advance on a teen boy in 1986. The Oscar-winner posted on Twitter that he doesn’t remember the encounter but apologizes. Actor Anthony Rapp tells BuzzFeed that he was 14 when he attended a party at Spacey’s apartment. He says an inebriated Spacey picked him up, placed him on his bed, and climbed on top of him. Rapp says he was able to get up and leave before the encounter could go further.
