Jamestown  (CSi)   – The North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU), in partnership with Agraria LLC members and the Farmers Restaurant Group, has opened the doors to a sixth Founding Farmers restaurant at King of Prussia, Pa. This is the organization’s first location outside of the Beltway, since opening its first farmer-owned restaurant in 2006.

NDFU President Mark Watne, says, “If you would have told me 11 years ago that we’d have six restaurants serving 43,000 guests a week, would have said, ‘No way.’ The response has been phenomenal.”

Unlike the organization’s five other restaurants, Founding Farmers King of Prussia features a bakery and café on its first level for walk-in guests. The 284-seat second level is separated into dining microclimates that replicate different rooms of a farmhouse and includes a bar area. Large portions of made-from-scratch comfort food, sourced from family farms and ranches, are served at affordable prices.

Watne says the concept of a farmer-owned restaurant started at NDFU with the idea that farmers could secure a greater share of the U.S. food dollar by taking advantage of opportunities at the top of the production food chain rather than the bottom.

He adds, “The thought was to get closer to the consumer and then own the whole food chain system. Not only are we putting more money into the hands of family farmers and ranchers, we’re strengthening people’s understanding of why family farm agriculture is so important to our country.”

The restaurant’s goal is to serve 100 percent U.S. family farm-sourced food. Last month, NDFU started trucking flour from the state mill and sugar from American Crystal to the East Coast. Potatoes and other raw commodities will soon be shipped with stops along the way to pick up commodities, such as butter in Minnesota and cheese in Wisconsin.

Watne says “It’s important that American family farmers and ranchers share in the profits.”

The group plans to open a seventh restaurant early next year at Reston, Va.

WASHINGTON (CSi)   – Senator John Hoeven (R-N.D.) has announced that the U.S. Senate has passed a bipartisan resolution he introduced designating November 4, 2017 as National Bison Day. The resolution celebrates the cultural and historical significance of the North American bison as well as the bison’s designation as the national mammal of the United States.

Hoven states, “Our national mammal, the bison, is a true American icon.” The bison’s incredible story includes one of the most remarkable and successful examples of conservation efforts as they were brought back from the brink of extinction to flourish again. Many Native Americans hold the bison as an important spiritual symbol, and it holds important historical and cultural significance for our nation. That’s why we worked to designate the bison as our national mammal and on National Bison Day we commemorate all that the bison means to our nation.”

Read the full resolution here.

The resolution is cosponsored by Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) Grand Forks, (NDHP) – On November 1, 2017, at approximately 3:35 pm, a North Dakota Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop a Pontiac Grand Am on Interstate 29 near ND Highway 200 pursuant to a gas drive-off complaint from Hillsboro, ND.

The vehicle’s driver fled west on Hwy 200, and the trooper pursued. The Pontiac fled onto gravel roads in Traill County before returning to Interstate 29 and driving south into Cass County. Tire deflation devices were deployed, flattening two of the suspect vehicle’s tires, and the vehicle again left Interstate 29 for gravel roads. Approximately two miles west of Harwood, NDHP troopers employed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver, forcing the fleeing vehicle to stop at about 4:20 pm. Top speeds had reached approximately 105 mph.

During the pursuit officers learned the vehicle was stolen. The driver, 36 year old Thomas Hibpshman, Jr., of West Fargo, ND, was arrested without further incident for possession of stolen property, fleeing law enforcement, driving with a suspended driver’s license, theft of fuel, and outstanding warrants. Charges are pending for the 32-year old female passenger.

Troopers were assisted by deputies from the Traill County Sheriff’s Office and Cass County Sheriff’s Office. No officers, suspects, or citizens sustained any injuries during the pursuit.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck police say the officer injured in an attack by a suspect he later shot has returned to work.

The officer will be on desk duty until the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation completes a review. The officer was attacked after responding to a call at the Bismarck Motor Motel Oct. 15. Authorities say the suspect, Donald Miller, punched the officer in the head repeatedly and gouged his eyes.

Miller was shot in the stomach. He’s been charged with assaulting a peace officer and robbery.

GRANDIN, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo man ended up inadvertently “plowing” a short section of Interstate 29 in Cass County when the chisel plow he was pulling with a tractor struck an overpass.

The Highway Patrol says the man was traveling from a field near Grandin to a Horace-area farm midday Tuesday when the 16-foot-tall plow hit the bottom of an overpass. The bridge wasn’t damaged, but the impact pushed the plow spades into the roadway and resulted in some deep gouges to the surface.

The driver wasn’t injured, but he was cited for violating height restrictions.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota is temporarily making it easier for commercial drivers to deliver propane. Gov. Doug Burgum has waived hours-of-service requirements for drivers of commercial vehicles transporting the fuel. The request came from state Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. Burgum’s order says propane inventories are low due to market disruptions caused by hurricanes and other factors. Propane also is typically in demand this time of year for grain drying and home heating.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — An Enbridge Energy official kicked off a 12-day hearing by testifying that the company’s aging Line 3 crude oil pipeline across northern Minnesota is increasingly subject to corrosion and cracking. Laura Kennett says its maintenance needs are expected to grow exponentially unless the company can replace it.

The trial-like “evidentiary hearing” opened Wednesday before Administrative Law Judge Ann O’Reilly in St. Paul. The 60 witnesses scheduled to testify range from Enbridge officials and labor and oil industry allies that support the replacement, to representatives of environmental, tribal and climate change groups that oppose it.

Line 3 runs from Alberta across North Dakota and Minnesota to Wisconsin.

Enbridge hopes to persuade O’Reilly to recommend that the state Public Utilities Commission approves the replacement. The PUC is scheduled to decide in April.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A Dakotas nonprofit is urging consumers who buy health insurance on their own to sign up early through the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

The open enrollment period for 2018 health coverage began Wednesday and runs until Dec. 15, 2017, a sign-up period six weeks shorter than last year’s.

Community HealthCare Association of the Dakotas CEO Shelly Ten Napel says community health centers and others are working hard to inform people that coverage and financial help are available.

She says people who plan to renew or enroll in a health plan should get prepared and sign up early to ensure coverage.

The nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation says for the 2017 open enrollment period, over 21,000 people in North Dakota and more than 29,000 people in South Dakota selected a marketplace plan.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Thursday is the birthday for both Dakotas. President Benjamin Harrison signed papers admitting North Dakota and South Dakota as the 39th and 40th states in the union on Nov. 2, 1889. The two states are now 128 years old. They initially were part of the Dakota Territory created in 1861, which also included much of the present-day states of Montana and Wyoming.

World  Series…

LOS ANGELES (AP) — You can cross the Houston Astros off the list of major league teams without a World Series title.

The Astros are champions in their 56th big league season following a 5-1 win over the Dodgers in Game 7 at Los Angeles. They did it with another big homer from George Springer and an outstanding performance from their bullpen.

Houston was able to coast after scoring five times off losing pitcher Yu Darvish, who was lifted after just 1 2/3 innings for the second consecutive start. The Astros scored twice in the top of the first on an error by first baseman Cody Bellinger and an RBI grounder. Pitcher Lance McCullers later drove in a run with a second-inning grounder before Springer’s two-run homer made it 5-0 later in the inning, chasing Darvish.

Springer tied a World Series record with five home runs. He also became the first place to homer in four consecutive games during the same Fall Classic.

Darvish also was lifted with two out in the second inning of Game 3, which the Astros won 5-3. His ERA for the series is 21.60.

McCullers also received a quick hook, although he left with a 5-0 lead after allowing three hits over 2 1/3 innings. It was the first time neither starting pitcher got past the third inning in Game 7 of a World Series game, but that didn’t matter once the Astros’ relievers began to frustrate the Dodgers.

Andre Ethier (EE’-thee-ur) ended Houston’s series-clinching shutout bid with an RBI single in the sixth. It was the final hit of the year for the Dodgers as Houston’s pen retired its final 11 hitters to wrap up the series.

Winning pitcher Charlie Morton closed it out with four innings of one-run relief.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs have recalled Tony Parker from their G-League affiliate.

In World and National News…

NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say the man accused of killing eight people in a New York City truck attack chose Tuesday’s attack date to target Halloween crowds. A criminal complaint says Sayfullo Saipov had plotted the attack for two months, and had rented a truck ahead of time to practice turning it. Authorities say Saipov was inspired by the Islamic State group’s online videos. The Uzbek immigrant appeared in federal court Wednesday to answer to charges.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An intrusion into the U.S. election process last year by Russian hackers was only one aspect of a worldwide spying effort that had targets ranging from the pope’s representative in Ukraine to the punk band Pussy Riot in Moscow. That’s according to a digital hit list obtained by The Associated Press. The list provides the most detailed forensic evidence yet of the close alignment between the hackers and the Russian government.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are set to unveil their far-reaching tax overhaul Thursday, making major changes yet looking to preserve current tax rules for retirement accounts popular with middle-class Americans and to retain a top income-tax rate for million-dollar earners. GOP negotiators scrambled this week to finalize details of the first major revamp of the tax code in three decades. The legislation is a long-held goal for Capitol Hill Republicans who say they want to clean up an inefficient tax code.

BEIJING (AP) — Asian nations are bracing for President Donald Trump’s visit with fear, resignation and indignation. Looming over his 10-day trip to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines is one of the strangest relationships in the world _ an often surreal exchange of threats of annihilation between North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and Trump, who has also occasionally offered praise and dialogue. Trump has veered from threats to unleash “fire and fury” to calling Kim a “pretty smart cookie.”

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The CIA’s release of documents seized during the 2011 raid that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has again raised questions about Iran’s support of the extremist network leading up to the Sept. 11 terror attacks. U.S. intelligence officials and prosecutors have long said Iran formed loose ties to the terror organization from 1991 on, something noted in a 19-page report in Arabic included in the release of some 47,000 other documents by the CIA. Iran always has denied any links.
