Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Fire Department was called to a fire Friday about 11:17-a.m., reported in the backyard of a residence at 452 second Street West.
City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says furniture was being burned in the backyard.
No injuries reported with three city fire units, and 22 fire fighters on the scene about 35 minutes.
City Fire Chief Jim Reuther reminds residents of the city Ordinance prohibiting outdoor burning in city limits with the exception of approved fire pits, which may burn only wood. The city does not allow open burning even in fire pits of other materials such as garbage or other materials.
He adds that it cost the City of Jamestown $1,000 every time the city fire department is called out, and in the case of illegal burning, it costs taxpayers unnecessarily.
He points out that before outdoor burning, residents should be sure to check with the city fire department, if the action is lawful.
He says the city’s website, jamestownnd.org has the Ordinance outlined.

Doug Burgum has directed all government agencies to fly the United States and North Dakota flags at half-staff until sunset Thursday, Nov. 9, and encouraged North Dakotans to do the same at their homes and businesses, as a mark of respect for the victims of Sunday’s shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
The governor’s directive is in accordance with a proclamation issued Sunday night by President Donald Trump
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Records show that the closure of the only men’s homeless shelter in Bismarck followed financial management problems at Ruth Meiers Hospitality House.
The problems included a debt of more than $200,000 in back taxes, wage claims from employees and a loss of funding sources.
Board President Rae Ann Kelsch says the shelter was losing the nonprofit organization more than $125,000 annually.
Former Ruth Meiers Hospitality House Executive Director Jaclyn Hall submitted a letter of resignation in April. Kelsch said it included requests that the board decided it could not meet, and Hall was relieved of her duties.
Kelsch calls it a mutual decision. Hall declined comment.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The number of North Dakotans using food stamps to buy groceries is dropping, even as the state’s oil-driven economy has slowed and the population remains at an all-time high.
Data show an average of 53,748 people used food stamps monthly in fiscal 2017. That’s down about 500 people from fiscal 2016.
The federal fiscal year ends in September.
North Dakotans enrolled in the program received an average of about $122 monthly in 2016 and 2017.
A family of four in North Dakota can apply for food stamp aid with a gross income of less than $2,665 per month.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s lottery director says smaller Powerball jackpots during the last fiscal year led to a 22 percent decrease in lottery ticket sales.
But Randy Miller says the gambling activity was still the third highest in state history.
Miller says North Dakota gamblers wagered $27.6 million on lottery games for the fiscal year that ended June 30. That’s down from a record $35.7 million in fiscal 2016.
Miller says jackpots drive ticket sales and the record $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot in 2016 spurred a record number of sales that year.
After payouts and expenses, Miller says North Dakota’s lottery profits last fiscal year were $6.2 million. That’s down from $9.5 million the year before.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Thousands have welcomed Miss America Cara Mund back to her North Dakota hometown.
About 2,000 people turned out Saturday for Mund’s welcome-home party in Bismarck. Young girls and boys cheered when North Dakota’s first Miss America appeared at the Bismarck Event Center.
Mund told the crowd that — whether young girls are in North Dakota or in a rural area — they can make their dreams come true if they work hard.
The 23-year-old was crowned Miss America in September. Saturday was her first homecoming party, and before the event she stopped at Sanford Children’s Hospital to visit patients.
Heidi Allbee brought her two girls, 10 and 3, to Mund’s homecoming. Allbee told The Bismarck Tribune it’s a “source for pride” for North Dakota to finally have a Miss America.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot is coming up short with its promised leverage funds for its National Disaster Resilience Program, but the program’s manager says there’s still time to catch up.
The Minot Daily News reports that in its agreement with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the city agreed to leverage almost $470 million for the program.
Program manager John Zakian says Minot made the leverage offer when it submitted its application to the department on a project request for $191 million. The department awarded $74.3 million.
Zakian says that Minot had an opportunity to negotiate with the department to reduce the leverage requirement but didn’t do so before signing the program agreement in June 2016.
The original leverage pledge included a $337 million city commitment over 30 years in support of the flood protection project.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot’s convention and visitor’s bureau has proposed a sales tax on food and beverages that would help generate the revenue it needs to stay competitive in the tourism industry.
The Minot Daily News reports the proposed 1 percent tax that would affect restaurants and bars would accrue nearly $1 million. If approved, the collections could be included in Visit Minot’s budget for 2019.
A committee for Visit Minot is currently developing a plan to present to the City Council. The committee also plans to meet with the food and beverage industry to present information and garner feedback.
Visit Minot’s income has plummeted from $1.1 million to less than $450,000 due to an economic shift that caused its two income sources, lodging and rental car taxes, to drop.
