Jamestown  (CSi) Jamestown voters in 2018 will be electing at least one new City Council member.

Ramone Gumke tells CSiNewsNow.com that when he was first elected in 2010 it was his plan to only serve two terms if he was re-elected, as he feels that serving more than two terms an elected representative, can become complacent and possibly lose their drive.

Gumke says he plans to run for seat on the Stutsman County Commission in 2018, and bring his talents and knowledge he’s gain in public service to the county.

Also in 2018 Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen’s term is up for election.

Jamestown  (CSi-United Way) –  The United Way of Stutsman County welcomed Lana Meissner, 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21 CCLC) MOST site coordinator for Jamestown to present at its monthly meeting in October.

The North Dakota South East Education Cooperative (SEEC) operates the MOST (Meaningful Out of School Time) in Jamestown. MOST is a United Way Agency and has three participating schools in Jamestown. Student registrations in Jamestown are at the following participating schools: Lincoln Elementary School:70 students, Roosevelt Elementary School: 55, and Washington Elementary School has 35.  The program is open for children from kindergarten through 5th grade.

This program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during out-of-school time for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and/or low-performing schools. It helps students meet state and local education standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers other educational services to the families of participating children.

Lana Meissner noted the program is structured to ensure there is a nice balance of educational activities as well as recreational.  United Way funds are used for snacks, activity items and staff needed to run the program.  Lana was proud to announce that they utilize local university students in the educational programs which is very beneficial for the university and the MOST program.  United Way of Stutsman County thanks Lana and the MOST program for presenting at the monthly meeting and for their work in this important program for our community. More information about the MOST program and the SEEC can be found online at https://www.ndseec.com/programs-and-services/student-services/21cclc-afterschool-programs.html.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota has issued 54,500 deer gun licenses in anticipation for the 2017 deer season.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that the state has seen an uptick in licenses since 2015 after sliding in 2007.

Jeb Williams is the wildlife division chief for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. He says the prospects for hunting are decent all around this year.

Williams says this year’s drought didn’t have an impact on the state’s deer, but that epizootic hemorrhagic disease did affect some white-tailed deer in the southwestern part of the state.

Williams says that hunters saw a nearly 70 percent success rate while hunting last year. He says that’s a good indicator of opportunity for this year.

North Dakota’s 2017 deer gun season will begin on Friday.

In world and national news…

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An Associated Press analysis of deleted Twitter accounts details how Russian agents attempted to deflect bad news around Donald Trump’s campaign right before last year’s presidential election. At the same time, they refocused criticism on the mainstream media and Hillary Clinton. The tweets actively pivoted away from a story about crude comments Trump made about groping women and began touting damaging emails hacked from Clinton campaign manager John Podesta.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top Senate Republican says if the report about Alabama candidate Roy Moore and sexual contact with a 14-year-old is true, he should drop out of the race. In a one-sentence statement Thursday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says: “If these allegations are true, he must step aside.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are restoring the adoption tax credit to their overhaul legislation after protests by family advocate groups and other interests. The amendment to the legislation by Rep. Kevin Brady, chair of the House’s tax-writing committee, proposes other complex changes to the bill nearing approval by the panel, including an array of business tax proposals which would in some cases further reduce tax rates.

BEIJING (AP) — President Donald Trump has saluted what he calls the “growing friendship” between the United States and China. Trump and first lady Melania Trump have attended a state dinner at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. That’s where Trump offered a toast to China’s president, Xi Jinping, promoting bonds that Trump says “will only grow stronger and stronger.” The dinner has capped off two days of pageantry and negotiations between Xi and Trump.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly two dozen House Republicans are pressing Speaker Paul Ryan to act quickly on legislation that would protect some 800,000 young immigrants brought illegally to the U.S. as children. The lawmakers say efforts to grant deportation protection would easily pass in the House. The status of these immigrants is uncertain. President Donald Trump is ending Obama-era protections, and given Congress until March to come up with a fix.
