FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fire officials are crediting a sprinkler system at a Fargo shopping mall with preventing a fire from spreading and causing major damage.

The Fargo Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Macy’s department store in West Acres about 2:45 a.m. Sunday. When firefighters arrived they discovered a sprinkler head had activated and extinguished the fire that had started in the management offices.

Authorities determined the fire was caused by an overheated electrical device. The fire spread to nearby office furniture before it was extinguished by the sprinkler system.

KFGO radio reports a damage estimate was not available.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Police are looking for an armed suspect who forced his way into a home in Grand Forks and assaulted a woman before robbing her.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota National Guard unit that served 10 months in Afghanistan is back on American soil.

About 60 members of the Bismarck-based 136th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion returned to the U.S. on Friday.

They’ll undergo the demobilization process at Fort Hood in Texas then return to North Dakota later this month.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Production of corn and soybeans in North Dakota is expected to be down this year, but sugar beet and potato production is forecast to be up from 2016.

The Agriculture Department’s latest estimates put North Dakota’s corn crop at 427 million bushels, down 17 percent from last year, and the state’s soybean crop at 249 million bushels, down just slightly.

Sugar beet production is forecast to be up 4 percent to 6.5 million tons and potato production up 16 percent to 25.2 million hundredweight. Those two crops are primarily grown in the Red River Valley, which was not hit as hard by drought during the growing season as other areas of the state.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck has opened a new World War I exhibit.

The Minot Daily News reports that the “North Dakota and the Great War” is one of several exhibits commemorating the 100th anniversary of the war. It will be displayed through fall 2018.

The exhibit features a variety of items from WWI including veteran uniforms. The exhibit also explains the impact the war had on North Dakota and how residents supported the war effort.

According to information from the exhibit, about 31,000 of the state’s residents served in WWI. It says that more than 200 of those soldiers were Native American.

LINCOLN, N.D. (AP) — A city near the central part of North Dakota is in jeopardy of losing its paratransit bus services to Bismarck if it can’t acquire funding.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that Lincoln has failed to obtain the roughly $20,000 needed to keep the service.

Earlier this year, voters turned down setting aside two mills that amount to about $20 more for residents per year in property taxes for the buses.

City councilman Tom Volk says Lincoln also has been unable to acquire grants. Council members are currently soliciting bids from other service providers to see if they can get a lower price.

Bis-Man Transit Executive Director Roy Rickert says the paratransit costs $42,400 annually to serve the community.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) — A 20-year-old suspect is in custody after two men were stabbed at the Mall of America in Minnesota during what police called an “interrupted theft.”

Bloomington police say the incident happened Sunday evening in the first-floor dressing room area of the Macy’s department store.

Police say the first victim was stabbed after he returned to the dressing room and confronted a man attempting to steal his belongings. The second victim was stabbed after intervening. Authorities say both men suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

While the Macy’s store closed early, the Mall of America stayed open and was not placed on lockdown. Deputy Chief Mike Hartley says the rest of the patrons were not in any danger.

The Mall of America has more than 520 stores and attractions that include an amusement park and an indoor zip line.

TOP 25 COLLEGE FOOTBALL-POLL

UNDATED (AP) — Miami Hurricanes football players have spent much of their recent postgame news conferences complaining about a lack of respect and recognition. They got some on Sunday, ascending to second in The Associated Press poll after blowing out previous No. 3 Notre Dame.

The 9-0 Hurricanes climbed five spots in the poll and are one of just four unbeaten teams in the top 25. They also picked up four first-place votes, while No. 1 Alabama claimed the other 57.

The Crimson Tide are 10-0 following Saturday’s fourth-quarter rally against Mississippi State.

Oklahoma moved up two spots to third and Clemson stayed fourth as they try to gain one of the four spots in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Wisconsin is fifth, followed by Auburn, Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State. The Tigers climbed four places to sixth after beating the Bulldogs, who fell from second to seventh.

NASCAR…

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Matt Kenseth may be going away, but he’s not doing it quietly.

Kenseth won for the first time this season in what could have been the second-to-last Cup race of his NASCAR career. Kenseth does not have a job lined up for next year and said he’ll take a break at the start of the season.

He passed Chase Elliott with 10 laps remaining to win Sunday at Phoenix Raceway and deny Elliott the final berth in next week’s championship race. Had Elliott hung on for the win, he would have qualified for the championship finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Elliott finished second for the seventh time this season.

Brad Keselowski earned the final spot in the championship on points. Kenseth had already been eliminated from the playoffs.

In world and national news…

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The violence and deaths that mark the drug war in the Philippines was not brought up by President Donald Trump when he meets with that nation’s president during Trump’s Asia tour. Trump generally doesn’t press foreign leaders on human rights issues as his predecessors had done. But White House officials suggest that Trump’s flattery of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte might be meant to help keep the Philippines from developing stronger ties with China.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A powerful earthquake that struck the Iraq-Iran border region has killed over 340 people in both countries. That casualty toll comes after Iran’s state-run news agency raised the death toll on its side of the border to 341 people killed. Some 5,953 have been injured. Earlier, Iraq’s Interior Ministry said seven people were killed there and 535 were injured in the Sunday night temblor. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.3 quake was centered outside the eastern Iraqi city of Halabja.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is adding entertainer to his role as host of the ASEAN summit, singing a duet on behalf of President Donald Trump. Duterte sang a duet of the song “Ikaw” with singer Pilita Corrales during Sunday night’s gala dinner at the summit in Manila. The Philippine leader told the audience he had done so “upon the orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the United States,” drawing laughter from the crowd and a smile from Trump.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alabama Republican Roy Moore says a lawsuit will be filed over the newspaper report carrying allegations that he had sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl four decades ago and that both Democrats and Republicans don’t want to see him win a special Senate election. While pressure to quit the race four weeks before Election Day intensified from within the Republican Party, Moore assured supporters Sunday night at a Huntsville, Alabama, gym that the Washington Post story was “fake news.”

SPINDALE, North Carolina (AP) — An Associated Press investigation has found that an evangelical church used positions of authority and deception to keep children in the sect. Three single mothers told the AP that a longtime Word of Faith Fellowship member who was a court clerk approached them and offered to keep their children while they served jail time. The clerk won permanent custody of the three children, even though a judge called her conduct inappropriate.
