Jamestown  (JRMC)— The air is getting colder, days shorter and spirit of giving stronger.

Jamestown Regional Medical Center recently joined forces with Cargill, Cavendish Farms, Newman Signs, RealTruck.com and UTC Aerospace Systems for a two-week community food drive. Employees from each business donated a total of 11,836 non-perishable food items, toiletries and monetary gifts to Community Action and The Salvation Army of Jamestown.

Katie Mittleider, clinical services assistant at JRMC says, “No one should ever have to go hungry.”

Mittleider has helped organize this event for the past three years, adding,  “If donating five items helps feed someone in need, you are making a huge difference.”

JRMC administrative clerk, Bonny Lippert, has a special passion for this food drive.

She says, “I used to work at a food pantry, so I’ve seen firsthand how empty these shelves can get.  It’s important for the community to come together for those in need.”

In 2016, 11.3 percent of Stutsman County residents were living below the poverty level. Sarah Oberlander, food pantry coordinator at Community Action, explained the extra need for support during the holiday season, saying,   “We help families going through hard times. A food drive like this can fill the shelves and help get us through the winter.

For more information on ways to give, contact Community Action at (701) 252-1821 or The Salvation Army at (701) 252-0290.

Farm Rescue is adding livestock feeding assistance to its list of services that include crop planting and harvesting, haying, and hay and grain hauling.

The new service will be offered throughout the organization’s territory, which has grown through the years to include North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Montana and Nebraska.

Farm Rescue doesn’t dole out cash. It provides free physical labor for farmers and ranchers dealing with an injury, illness or a natural disaster. It relies on volunteers from around the country, donations and corporate sponsors. It reached a milestone last summer, helping its 500th case.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the accident happened at 10 a.m. Friday at the intersection of two state highways about six miles west of Park River.

The crash killed 75-year-old Gerard Dahl, who was driving a Ford pickup.

The patrol says Dahl made a turn onto state Highway 32 and crossed in front of a man driving a semi-trailer. Dahl’s vehicle was struck on the passenger side.

The driver of the semi, 55-year-old James Gustafson, of Adams, was injured in the accident. A condition report was not available.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A health care provider is moving forward with plans to build a $275 million medical complex in northern North Dakota.

The Minot Daily News reports that Trinity Health is working toward a guaranteed maximum price contract for the construction of a new hospital and medical park in Minot.

The company is talking with contractors and architects to refine plans in order to lower costs and meet state health codes.

Earlier this month, the Ward County Commission approved $380 million in health care revenue bonds to finance the project. Construction is estimated to cost $275 million, while furnishing costs are estimated at $100 million.

Trinity Health’s plans call for a six-story hospital with about 200 beds, a 20-bed intensive care unit and an emergency trauma center with 27 treatment bays.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A group of students who know what it’s like to go without eating has opened a food pantry in Fargo that serves the homeless and other needy people.

The students are members of the Legacy Children’s Foundation, an after-school program that’s meant to help them earn their high school diplomas and contribute to the community. Most come from refugee families and qualify for free or reduced lunches.

The students order food, stock shelves, follow a budget and recruit others for food drives. They say it feels good to give something back to the community.

Group adviser Mary Jean Dehne (deen) says it’s about hungry kids serving hungry neighbors.

Fargo takes in more refugees than most American cities, as a proportion of its population, from places like Nepal, Sudan and Liberia.

UNDATED (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles continue to own the NFL’s best record after running their winning streak to nine games.

Carson Wentz threw for three more touchdowns and had 227 passing yards as the 10-1 Eagles trounced the Bears 31-3 in Philadelphia. Wentz has thrown 27 scoring passes this season, five off the team record set by Sonny Jurgensen in 1961.

Zach Ertz was Wentz’s primary target with 10 receptions for 103 yards and a TD. LeGarrette Blount had 102 yards rushing for the Eagles, who reduced their magic number to one for clinching their first NFC East title since 2013.

The Eagles’ defense allowed zero total yards in the first half and just 140 for the game. The 3-8 Bears failed to record a first down in the opening half, something that hadn’t happened in the NFL since 2012.

The Eagles also moved closer to clinching home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs when another lengthy winning streak ended.

The Steelers pulled out their sixth straight win by downing the Packers 31-28 on Chris Boswell’s 53-yard field goal as time expired. The Steelers needed the late kick despite Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH’-lihs-bur-gur), who threw for 351 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Le’Veon (LEH’-vee-ahn) Bell ran for 95 yards and had another 88 receiving as Pittsburgh remained tied with New England for the AFC’s best record.
