Bismarck (NDSH) The North Dakota State Hospital is continuing a long-standing holiday tradition on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, as it hosts the Celebration of Lights event, which brings people from the community together to share holiday joy while raising awareness of people with mental illness who are in recovery. The community is invited to enjoy a concert featuring Jamestown High School’s Jazz Choir and Show Choir, the lighting of a Tree of Hope, and a visit by Santa who will provide treat bags for participants. Activities begin at 6:30 p.m., and refreshments, including cookies, hot chocolate and coffee will also be served.

All programming will be held in the hospital’s LaHaug Gym, 2605 Circle Drive on the State Hospital campus in Jamestown.

Director of Inpatient Services at the hospital, Kim Kapp says, “We enjoy holding this annual event because it brings people together, and it brings joy. It is hard to be in a hospital during the holidays. The Celebration of Lights allows people who are receiving inpatient mental health or substance addiction services to enjoy a traditional community celebration.”

Kapp said the Mental Health Association in North Dakota (now Mental Health America in North Dakota) started the Celebration of Lights event about 27 years ago to help shine light on the stigma of mental illness, while honoring and supporting family members, friends and others living with mental illness.

Kapp adds, “Like other diseases, mental illness and addiction are treatable, and people can and do recover. We all have a stake in promoting mental health and wellness for children and adults, so that our communities are healthier and happier.”

The North Dakota State Hospital provides specialized inpatient or residential care to individuals with serious and persistent mental illnesses and substance use disorders whose needs exceed community resources. The hospital also provides other specialized services.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Residents of the Red River Valley know him only as “the giving man.” His real name is a mystery, but his generosity is well known.

Witnesses say the man was recently at Gate City Bank in Fargo where he was handing out $100 bills. Bank employee Jalyssa Sorenson says the man gave a $100 bill to one of her co-worker, who initially declined to accept it. Sorenson says the man insisted and then gave others $100 bills as well.

Shawna Wing, of Fargo, says the generosity is appreciated especially during the holidays and hopefully will inspire others to give.

WDAY-TV reports a similar scenario played out in Detroit Lakes recently apparently involving the same man.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A dozen high school districts in North Dakota plan to take the nationally recognized ACT in lieu of state assessments for math and English.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that district officials say they’re swapping assessments under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act in order to reduce testing time and to administer a test that “matters” to students.

English and math standards were rewritten last year, so the state Department of Public Instruction is developing new assessments to meet the revised standards.

Some district officials say they trust the ACT over a new assessment they haven’t seen.

The department’s public information specialist says there are still issues that need to be addressed before districts can swap assessments, including whether it meets federal requirements.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A Balta man is accused of illegally killing deer after a tip was called in to the state’s “Report All Poachers” hotline.

The Minot Daily News reports that Daryl Klein is facing seven counts of unlawful taking of a big game animal. State Game and Fish Department officials say they discovered about 20 dead dear in or near the Klein farmstead.

An affidavit says Klein admitted to killing at least seven deer and likely more. He told investigators he was frustrated because the animals were eating his grain.

Klein is facing a maximum penalty of a year in jail on each charge. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Jan. 29 in Rugby.

Klein’s attorney, William Hartl, did not immediately respond to a phone message left at his office Saturday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota rural schools with limited finances are using online classes to expand course offerings for students.

The Bismarck Tribune reports the North Dakota Center for Distance Education, which offers hundreds of online courses, has seen a considerable increase in course enrollments after the state Legislature started subsidizing course costs. Students enrolled in 7,350 courses at the center this year, compared to about 2,170 in 2011.

School districts utilize the center’s online courses when there aren’t financial resources or certified instructors available to offer certain subjects.

The center also offers Advanced Placement, credit-recovery courses and electives online.

The Legislature appropriates funds for the center every two years. Districts and students are also charged tuition.

College Football Playoff Field…

UNDATED (AP) — Alabama edged out Ohio State for the final spot in the College Football Playoff field. The Crimson Tide’s reward is a playoff rematch against defending national champion Clemson in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 1.

Clemson’s inclusion as the top seed in the bracket was expected since the Tigers (12-1) were No. 1 in the previous CFP rankings and then routed Miami 38-3 in the ACC title game on Saturday.

The inclusion of Alabama (11-1) was much more contentious. Fourth-seeded Alabama didn’t even win the Southeastern Conference West after losing to Auburn in the final game of the regular season, but was impressive until that loss.

Clemson beat Alabama 35-31 in the national championship game last season. The Tigers have made it back to the CFP with a dominant defense and the emergence of junior quarterback Kelly Bryant.

AP Top 25 Football Poll

The Associated Press voters prefer Alabama over Ohio State.

In the final Top 25 of the regular season, the Crimson Tide was No. 4 and the Buckeyes were No. 5.
