Jamestown  (Chamber News)  The Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce understands the value of

supporting the small business community in Jamestown. Promotional materials including

shopping bags, magnets, entry rugs, posters and more were provided to 17 chamber member

businesses to help them promote Small Business Saturday, which was held on November 25th.

The member businesses included Orriginals, Inc.; Brown and Saenger; The Arts Center;

Gladstone Inn & Suites; Shubert’s Carpet One; Two Rivers Printing; The UPS Store;

Zimmerman’s Furniture; Home Design Center; Medicine Shoppe; The Dakota Store; High Plains

Water; Conlin’s Furniture; Professional Eyecare Center; Papa Murphy’s; Quiznos Sub; and the

Easterseal Goodwill Retail Store.

These local small businesses were able to provide the

promotional materials to their customers during this special day of recognition of how

important it is to shop local and support the small, local businesses.

Small Business Saturday is an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small

businesses and celebrating communities across the country in their efforts to recognize the

value of that support to the local economy. Founded by American Express in 2010, Small

Business Saturday has been celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to

provide community residents a chance to support their mom and pop stores, which in turn help

support the local sales tax and wages paid to their employees, which provides direct support to

the community.

This year’s event, sponsored by the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce, wanted to

recognize chamber members who provided both products and services. We thank them for

participating in this event, and thank those who shop locally to help sustain our community.

For more information on shopping local and supporting chamber members, please contact the

Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce at 701-252-4830, or check out the business directory

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Doug Burgum is concluding an eventful first year as North Dakota’s governor and touting progress toward his vow to “reinvent state government.”

The wealthy former software executive says his administration is “trying to shrink” it but there is still work to be done.

Burgum took office amid a sharp downturn in tax revenues due to prolonged slumps in oil and agriculture prices in a state where spending had risen more than $8 billion in the past decade. Burgum says the state budget remains a top issue.

His first year also was marked by massive pipeline protests, a clash with legislators over vetoes and an admission that he smoked marijuana as a young man.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Snowplows have been involved in three crashes this week along North Dakota’s Highway 2.

The Bismarck Tribune reports two of the crashes occurred on Wednesday near Tioga. The third occurred near Towner. A fourth snowplow crash occurred on Thursday on Highway 85 south of Williston.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says no injuries were reported in any of the crashes.

Authorities are reminding drivers to slow down, double the normal following distance when behind a snowplow and not drive through white-outs or snow fog. They say snowplow drivers will pull over and stop when it’s safe to allow traffic to pass.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A Williston family has found their lost dog after four years and 125 miles.

The Bismarck Tribune reports Pete Vachal let his then-two-year-old English bulldog, Karley, out to go to the bathroom four years ago and the dog never came back. Vachal says his children were heartbroken.

The dog was found earlier this week in what Minot police said was an abandoned drug house. The dog and a cat had been left behind in the house. Karley had a microchip that helped animal control workers track down Vachal.

Vachal picked Karley up in Minot on Friday. He suspects someone stole Karley. He says he believes criminals attracted by the oilfield rush have stolen his motorcycle, four-wheeler and Karley but the only one he got back was the dog.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot’s city manager has faced a steady stream of challenges since he first took the helm in December 2016.

The Minot Daily News reports that Tom Barry has had to manage flood control financing, buyouts, parking ramps, a dispute with Earth Recycling and financial issues with North Dakota Port Services in his first year as city manager.

Barry says he inherited many of the city’s historical challenges that spilled over from the flood.

Barry’s goal is to improve community engagement. He initiated a city newsletter this year and added a communications assistant position in the public information office. He plans to introduce citizen satisfaction surveys and host a State of the City address event in February.

He wants to organize a council retreat next year to develop strategic planning.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — BNSF Railway is weighing its options for a new railroad bridge over the Missouri River in Bismarck.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that BNSF Railways is considering demolishing the current century-old bridge to make way for a wider deck plate bridge that would offer more stability. But some residents want to preserve the structure that has been a part of the Bismarck-Mandan skyline for 134 years.

During a meeting last week, over 75 residents proposed transferring ownership of the bridge so that a local group can manage its preservation and turn it into a walking and biking trail.

BNSF Railway has examined an alternative that keeps the current bridge and builds a new one 80 feet (25 meters) up the river. But the company says the proposal is problematic. The company hopes to start construction next yea

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — If the Eagles do their part in the playoffs, all roads to the NFC championship lead to Philadelphia. Jake Elliott kicked a 48-yard field goal with 22 seconds left, and the Philadelphia Eagles clinched the No. 1 seed for the NFC playoffs with a sloppy 19-10 victory over the Oakland Raiders. The Eagles (13-2) went to the Super Bowl and lost 24-21 to New England the last time they had home-field advantage following the 2004 season.

HOUSTON (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers kept their hopes for best record in the AFC alive Monday. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns, and the Pittsburgh Steelers clinched a first-round playoff bye with a 34-6 win over the Houston Texans on Monday. Roethlisberger threw passes to six players as Pittsburgh improved to 12-3. Pittsburgh is tied with New England for best record in the AFC and would need help to clinch home field since the Patriots hold the tiebreaker.

AP Basketball Poll…

NEW YORK (AP) — The new AP Top 25 poll features the same four teams at the top, led by No. 1 Villanova.

The Wildcats (12-0) received 43 of 65 first-place votes to stay at No. 1 for the third consecutive week.

Michigan State (12-1) was second and had 16 first-place votes, while third-ranked Arizona State (12-0) had six first-place votes to stay ahead of No. 4 Duke (12-1).

Texas A&M (11-1) climbed to fifth, followed by Xavier, West Virginia, Wichita State, Virginia and TCU to round out the top 10.

Four ranked teams took big slides after losses to unranked opponents last week. North Carolina fell eight spots to No. 13, while Gonzaga also fell eight spots to No. 20.

Now-No. 15 Miami and No. 16 Kentucky each fell nine spots.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stanford has fallen out of The Associated Press women’s basketball poll for the first time since the 2001 season.

The Cardinal (6-6) saw their streak of 312 consecutive weeks in the Top 25 end Monday. The remarkable run started with the 2001-02 preseason poll. Stanford lost at home last week to Western Illinois and Tennessee.

Only UConn, which remains the unanimous No. 1 team, has a longer active streak in the poll. The Huskies have been ranked for 458 consecutive weeks. Stanford’s streak is tied for third longest in the history of the poll. Tennessee had the longest run at 565 weeks. Stanford’s mark ties it with Duke.

UConn was followed by Notre Dame, Louisville, South Carolina and Mississippi State. With a light schedule because of the holidays, the top 17 teams stayed the same.

Oklahoma State replaced the Cardinal in the poll, coming in at No. 24.

Junior Hockey…

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. has a chance to repeat as a champion at the world junior hockey championship. The 10-nation tournament opens in Buffalo, New York, on Tuesday. Canada has a score to settle after losing to the U.S. in last year’s title game. Parity may be catching up to Canada. The landscape has dramatically shifted since 2009, when the Canadians set a world junior record by winning their fifth straight title.

In world and national news…

CHICAGO (AP) — It was a White Christmas for much of the Northeast and Midwest. A blizzard swept into parts of New England Monday and bitter cold enveloped much of the West. Forecasters expected up to 10 inches of snow for parts of Maine and New Hampshire, with wind gusts up to 50 mph. The National Weather Service says it’s only the sixth time since 1884 that downtown Portland, Oregon had measurable snow – only an inch or two – on a Dec. 25.

MOSCOW (AP) — The Kremlin says officials should review opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s calls for an election boycott to see if they might be breaking the law. In a widely anticipated decision, Russia’s top election body has voted to formally bar anti-corruption crusader Navalny from running in the presidential election next March.

PARIS (AP) — The French government is scrambling to meet President Emmanuel Macron’s deadline to get migrants off France’s streets by year’s end. That won’t likely happen, and Macron’s government is now tightening the screws: ramping up expulsions, raising pressure on economic migrants and allowing controversial ID checks in emergency shelters. Critics contend that Macron’s increasingly tough policy on migrants contradicts his image as a humanist who defeated an anti-immigrant populist for the presidency.

UNDATED (AP) — The U.S. has negotiated a $285 million cut in the United Nations budget for 2018-2019. The U.S. Mission to the United Nations says reductions would also be made to the U.N.’s management and support functions. U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley says she’s pleased with the results of budget negotiations but that the mission would continue to “look at ways to increase the U.N.’s efficiency? while protecting our interests.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says there’s no “singular reason” why President Donald Trump has yet to host his first State Dinner after almost a year in office. Trump seemed to delight in attending such lavish events on a recent trip to Asia, but has not presided over a similar event at the White House since his inauguration. He spoke dismissively of these celebrations as a candidate for president.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Heather Menzies-Urich, who played one of the singing von Trapp children in the 1965 hit film, “The Sound of Music,” has died. She was 68.

Her son, actor Ryan Urich, told Variety that his mother died late Sunday in Frankford, Ontario, Canada. She had been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Menzies-Urich played Louisa von Trapp, the third-oldest of the seven von Trapp children in the film adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

“The Sound of Music” captured five Academy Awards, including best picture.

Variety reports that Menzies-Urich is survived by two other children, several grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Her husband, actor Robert Urich, died in 2002.
