FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A pilot and three passengers escaped injury when their single-engine airplane made an emergency landing at the airport in Fargo.

Officials at Hector International Airport say the pilot put the plane down on its belly after its landing gear failed Monday evening. Airport Authority director Shawn Dobberstein tells KFGO the Trinidad plane left the airport in Moorhead, Minnesota about 5 p.m. A short time later the pilot determined the landing gear didn’t work, which was confirmed by the control tower at Hector in a fly-by.

The pilot landed the plane shortly before 6 p.m. Air traffic was diverted for about 90 minutes while the damaged plane was cleared from the north-south runway.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An economist says a business conditions index for nine Midwest and Plains states rose over the past month, pointing to continuing improvement in regional economic conditions.

A report released Tuesday says the Mid-America Business Conditions Index climbed to 59.0 from 57.2 in November. The October figure was 58.8.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says profit growth, low interest rates and the recently passed tax package pushed business confidence last month to its highest level since January 2011.

The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth in that factor. A score below that suggests decline.

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

In sports…

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The number of young walleye in the Lake Sakakawea reservoir on the Missouri River in North Dakota is among the highest in decades.

Game and Fish Department crews last year had the fourth-highest catch of young walleye in the lake in the half-century history of fall surveys.

Fisheries management official Scott Gangl (GANG’-uhl) says stocking is one reason. But he also cites natural reproduction aided by a rebounding smelt population since major flooding seven years ago flushed substantial numbers of the forage fish through Garrison Dam.

The flood also changed the river channel downstream of the dam. There were fewer young walleye produced downstream last year, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Gangl says there are a lot of young fish downstream that need to feed and grow.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-BOWL GAMES

UNDATED (AP) — It will be an all-SEC game for the National Championship in Atlanta next Monday. Fourth-ranked Alabama advanced with a victory over No. 1 Clemson in the Sugar Bowl after third-ranked Georgia outlasted No. 2 Oklahoma to win the Rose Bowl.

In New Orleans, Jalen Hurts threw for two touchdowns and the Crimson Tide’s defense outscored Clemson’s offense in a 24-6 win over the Tigers.

McKenzie Milton was the catalyst as 10th-ranked UCF earned a 34-27 Peach Bowl win over No. 7 Auburn in Atlanta. Milton threw for two touchdowns and ran for 116 yards and another score to help the 13-0 Knights end the year as the only unbeaten team in major college football. Chequan Burkett returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown in coach Scott Frost’s final game before heading to Nebraska.

Myles Boykin turned an acrobatic catch into a go-ahead, 55-yard touchdown with 1:28 remaining to send 14th-ranked Notre Dame past No. 16 LSU in the Citrus Bowl at Orlando.

He played well enough to get Clemson to a third straight College Football Playoff meeting with Alabama — and then it all went wrong.

Bryant was intercepted twice — with both turnovers leading to Alabama touchdowns — and was sacked a season-high five times in a 24-6 loss in the Sugar Bowl on Monday night.
