BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Wyoming-based company that illegally dumped oilfield waste in western North Dakota has paid the state more than $950,000 after the state Supreme Court affirmed the fine last month.
The Department of Mineral Resources tells The Bismarck Tribune that Black Hills Trucking paid $951,526 to the North Dakota Industrial Commission last week. It’s the largest fine ever collected by the regulatory group.
The company earlier unsuccessfully appealed the fine to the North Dakota Supreme Court, arguing it already paid a $200,000 fine to the state Health Department for the same incident.
The company was accused of illegally dumping saltwater near Tioga in February and March 2014.
Nearly all of the Industrial Commission fine will go into a state fund that’s used to restore sites affected by oil and gas development.
STANTON, N.D. (AP) — Trial for a former Beulah Lead police officer who prosecutors say admitted to sexual contact with a teenager has been rescheduled for March.
A trial that was to have started Thursday will now begin March 8 for 36-year-old Dustin Pekas at the Mercer County Courthouse in Stanton. The Bismarck Tribune says court records show the discovery process is not yet complete, so the trial was reset.
Pekas is charged with felony sexual assault. The former officer lost his motion last month to have statements made to state investigators in September thrown out because of lack of counsel.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says electric power generation from the Missouri River’s six upstream dams increased 23 percent in 2017.
The agency manages dams and reservoirs along the 2,341-mile river. Corps engineer Mike Swenson says energy production from the dams in the Dakotas, Montana and Nebraska totaled 9.6 billion kilowatts of electricity last year, up from 7.6 billion kilowatts.
He says a billion kilowatt-hours of power is enough to supply about 86,000 homes for a year.
The Western Area Power Administration sells the power generated from the dams to rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, Indian tribes and other customers.
But the power created last year wasn’t enough to satisfy customers’ contracts and WAPA had to purchase $28.3 million of electricity on the open market.

The Ministry on the Margins offers meals, a food pantry and other services in the area. The ministry’s Sister Kathleen Atkinson tells the Bismarck Tribune that the severe weather has been particularly difficult for homeless residents and people who can’t afford cold-weather repairs.
She says three people without access to heat visited the ministry Tuesday.

The Missouri Slope Areawide United Way has been helping manage the city’s emergency housing needs. Executive Director Jena Gullo says the agency has seen an increase in people seeking shelter amid the recent frigid weather.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-NEWS
UNDATED (AP) — Two of the Pac-12’s best quarterbacks are now available to NFL teams.
Southern California signal-caller Sam Darnold has announced on Instagram that he will forgo his final two seasons of eligibility to enter the upcoming draft.
Darnold became the Trojans’ starter as a redshirt and won the Rose bowl with a record 453-yard, five-touchdown performance against Penn State that season. He is projected as a high first-round selection after passing for 7,229 yards with 57 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions in 27 career games for the Trojans.
Darnold revealed his decision minutes after UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen announced on Twitter that he is skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft.
Rosen is expected to be a high first-round pick after serving as the Bruins’ starting quarterback the past three seasons. He passed for 9,301 yards with 59 touchdown passes and 26 interceptions in 30 games.
NFL-NEWS
The Packers have announced the departure of veteran defensive coordinator Dom Capers, along with defensive line coach Mike Trgovac and inside linebacker Scott McCurley. The moves come after the Packers finished 22nd in total defensive the last two seasons despite being stocked with high draft picks.
UNDATED (AP) — The Oakland Raiders are a step closer to becoming the Las Vegas Raiders.
Commissioners in Nevada’s Clark County have approved a development agreement with the Raiders. The agreement defines public safety and infrastructure improvements in and around the stadium that the team will finance.
The document does not include a finalized plan for thousands of county-mandated parking spots needed for a stadium the Raiders plan to occupy by the start of the 2020 season.
Meanwhile, Jon Gruden says he had a good talk with Raiders owner Mark Davis about returning to the organization for a second stint as coach and believes there is a “good chance” it will happen.
Gruden gave an interview to ESPN Radio on Wednesday to discuss his pursuit of the Raiders job that opened when Jack Del Rio was fired after a disappointing six-win season. Gruden has been out of coaching the past nine years while serving as an ESPN analyst.
TENNIS-AUSTRALIAN OPEN
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Andy Murray needed only a couple of days in Australia to realize the hip problem that has kept him out of competitive tennis since Wimbledon was not going to improve in time for the season’s first major.
The five-time finalist withdrew from the Australian Open today, two days after pulling out of a tuneup event in Brisbane before his first match.
Confirmation of his absence came hours after Kei Nishikori (kay nee-shee-KOHR’-ee) announced that he, also, wouldn’t have enough time to fully recover from a torn wrist tendon before the Australian Open starts Jan. 15 in Melbourne.
Former No. 1-ranked Murray, a three-time major winner, has not played a competitive match since a quarterfinal exit at Wimbledon last July.

The winning numbers selected Wednesday night are 2, 18, 37, 39 and 42, and the Powerball number is 12.
The estimated jackpot would make it the nation’s 10th largest lottery prize ever.
Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of winning are one in 292.2 million.
The $460 million prize refers to the annuity option, paid over 29 years. The cash prize would be $291 million.
Lottery players also can vie for another giant prize, as the Mega Millions game’s grand prize will be $418 million in Friday’s drawing.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Donald Trump was left feeling “furious” and “disgusted” after claims by his former top adviser Steve Bannon in a new book. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders complained Wednesday the book contained “outrageous” and “completely false claims against the president, his administration and his family.” The criticism was spurred by the unflattering book by Michael Wolff that paints Trump as a leader who doesn’t understand the weight of the presidency.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A massive winter storm packing snow, ice and high winds is moving up the Eastern Seaboard. The worst conditions are expected from the Carolinas to Maine. The National Weather Service says there could be wind gusts of up to 60 mph where there are blizzard warnings. Boston could get up to 14 inches of snow. And a wave of bracing cold is expected to follow the storm.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — There are fewer reports of demonstrations in Iran after a week of unrest that killed at least 21 people. This is making it difficult to gauge if it means that the anti-government protests are subsiding or that the Iranian government’s blocking of social media apps has managed to stop the protesters from offering new images of rallies. Meanwhile, thousands rallied on Thursday in support of the government in several towns and cities in Iran.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s rivals are eager to see changes in the country but have taken different approaches in public toward the protests that are underway in Iran. Saudi Arabia appears to be playing a wait-and-see game, careful not to issue statements of support for protesters that would give credence to claims by Iran’s supreme leader who accused Iran’s enemies of stoking the unrest. Israel’s prime minister, meanwhile, has openly praised what he called the bravery of the Iranian protesters seeking freedom.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia legislative election that could determine which party controls the House is set to be decided by chance. That’s after an election, a recount and a legal battle all failed to determine a winner. Virginia elections officials will conduct a blind drawing Thursday morning to determine the winner of the 94th House District contest. The candidates are incumbent Republican David Yancey and Democrat Shelly Simonds.
