A strong winter storm is expected to impact parts of the region on
Wednesday and Thursday. Right now, the brunt of the storm will
likely affect eastern South Dakota as well as central and
northeast Minnesota. However, the storm may produce enough snow
and blowing snow across parts of eastern North Dakota and
northwestern Minnesota to cause some travel impacts.

There will likely be some snow accumulations along with 25 to 30 mph winds.
But the location of the heaviest snowfall and resulting blowing
snow are in question.

Falling temperatures during the day Wednesday will lead to dangerous wind chills to 35 below zero Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Thereafter, a clipper system is forecast to produce accumulating
snow and another surge of arctic air Friday. The frigid
temperatures will continue through the weekend. Travelers and
those participating in outdoor activities will need to prepare for
the possibility of hazardous weather.

The Minot Daily News reports the Friday fire at Roughneck Auto engulfed the 5,000-square-foot building, along with a few vehicles. Firefighters pulled another half dozen away from the flames.

No injuries were reported. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire that authorities say appeared to have started in a chimney.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — University of North Dakota police say a 17-year-old male has been arrested on possible charges of criminal trespass and attempted sexual assault of a female student in her dorm room.

The teen was arrested Sunday. KFGO reports he is not affiliated with the university. Police say the female student awoke to a male in her room at Noren Hall early Saturday. Authorities say the suspect tried to remove the victim’s clothes, but left a short time later.

Police are also looking for an accomplice that left with the suspect in a car. Officials say the two may have burglarized several rooms in the dorm.

FARGO — Fargo police were able to defuse a situation where they believed a suicidal woman was armed with a weapon.

WDAY reports,  officers handcuffed her at West Acres in the Macy’s parking lot.

Her arrest occured around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police say this woman was suicidal and had threatened to hurt herself.

Authorities would not confirm if she had threatened to hurt others.

Police discovered the weapon was a BB gun, but it looked real and so officers treated it as a dangerous situation before they knew what it was.

As of right now, police say they are not pressing charges.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot police say a shoplifting suspect who reportedly pulled a gun on an officer is in custody.

Police say the 23-year-old Minot man was taken into custody late Sunday afternoon.

Police were called Saturday afternoon to a store in the Dakota Square Mall about a shoplifter in custody. When the officer arrived, police say the suspect brandished a handgun and ran out the store.

Witnesses saw a man matching the suspect’s description flee from the main doors near the mall’s food court.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck family has turned off the lights on their popular Christmas display — possibly for good.

Last month, the Chmielewski family announced this would be the final season for their elaborate display after they learned of neighbor complaints.

But after an outpouring of people urging them to reconsider, the family did not rule out setting up the Chmielewski Christmas Corner next year.

Kathy Chmielewski tells The Bismarck Tribune her family will make a decision next year.

The home is a regular stop for limo drivers taking people on light tours. This season the home added a roller coaster that carries Santa and other Christmas characters around the roof, and attracted 1,600 kids in one night.

The attraction’s final night was Friday. The family began taking down decorations on Saturday.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot is looking to auction a house that the city purchased in 2015 to create a gateway to a river greenway and a museum visitor’s center.

The city learned after acquiring the property that there wasn’t a funding source for the greenway improvements.

The Minot Daily News reports that the City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday to recommend the authorization to auction the house on Walders Street for relocation.

Resilience Program Manager John Zakian has advised the council to auction the house because continued ownership will require maintenance costs and upkeep.

Council member Stephan Podrygula says the city made a mistake and should be more careful with purchases.

The city’s finance director says they could wait several years to auction the house and rent it in the meantime.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Officials say a $1.2 billion natural gas liquids pipeline proposed from Montana to Kansas will help accommodate increasing production in North Dakota and help reduce the wasteful flaring of excess gas in the state’s oil fields.

Oneok’s 900-mile Elk Creek Pipeline would transport up to 240,000 barrels per day of natural gas liquids from a terminal near Sidney, Montana, to Bushton, Kansas.

North Dakota Pipeline Authority Director Justin Kringstad says more pipelines are needed to transport growing volumes of natural gas liquids, such as ethane, propane and butane. The Elk Creek Pipeline wouldn’t cross North Dakota but would connect to existing pipelines in the northwestern part of the state.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that the project still needs regulatory approvals from federal, state and local agencies.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks report says a lake trout restock of a western reservoir is going well. The Rapid City Journal reports that the fish were added to Deerfield Reservoir in 2015 to deal with an overabundance of rock bass, a smaller predatory fish. The agency’s report says tagged lake trout and accounts from local anglers show that the fish have been able to survive and are adjusting to life in the reservoir.

UNDATED (AP) — Mike Mularkey will remain head coach of the Titans after leading the team to its first playoff victory in 14 years.

Owner Amy Adams Strunk issued a statement today saying that Mularkey isn’t going anywhere after the Titans made the postseason in just his second full season at the job.

Tennessee advanced to the AFC divisional round by turning a 21-3 halftime deficit into a 22-21 victory at Kansas City on Saturday.

In other NFL news:

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, says she’s “amazed at the lengths people will go to, to lie for money and for power.” She’s talking about Michael Wolff, the author of “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.” Haley is among several officials in the Trump administration who are pushing back against revelations in the book that questions President Donald Trump’s fitness for office. Haley told ABC’s “This Week” that “no one questions the stability of the president.”

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — The newly-minted Golden Globes winners had a good reason to stop by the official show after party this year, and it has nothing to do with the booze. For the first time, winners could have their Globes trophies engraved at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s party.

ATLANTA (AP) — Protesters are getting ready for President Donald Trump’s visit to Atlanta to attend the College Football Championship game between Alabama and Georgia. The NAACP is asking people to wear white and hold anti-Trump signs. Another group says demonstrators will “take a knee” before the big game to protest the visit.

BEIJING (AP) — The South Korean coast guard says thick smoke is still billowing from a burning oil tanker in the East China Sea and bad weather is also worsening visibility. Personnel from three countries are working to find the tanker’s 32 missing crew members and contain oil spewing from the blazing wreck. The Iranian tanker and a freighter collided late Saturday. The tanker was carrying condensate, a type of ultra-light oil.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s foreign minister has warned neighboring countries over fomenting insecurity in his country, a reference to anti-government protests that have roiled Iran over the past two weeks. Zarif says that “no country can create a secure environment for itself at the expense of creating insecurity among its neighbors.”
