FARGO, N.D. (AP) — About 50 North Dakota Air National Guard airmen are coming home this week after six months of duty in southwest Asia.
The group of Happy Hooligans from the Fargo-based 119th Wing were returning home Monday. They’re part of nearly 150 airmen who deployed last year — the unit’s largest deployment since the Korean War.
The deployment included civil engineers, finance specialists and communications specialists who provided relief for Air Force personnel on duty in the area.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A 38-year-old North Dakota man serving a prison sentence for possession of child pornography is appealing a judicial order that his Xbox and PlayStation 2 be destroyed.
The Daily News reports that James Kremer of Minot is asking the state Supreme Court to rule that the gaming consoles be returned to his mother, as well as a laptop and external hard drive, minus any illegal files.
Kremer is serving a 10-year prison term.
Kremer argues that the Xbox and PlayStation 2 were not used in his crimes and are not forfeitable property. He says the laptop contains information he needs to prove his innocence in an appeal, as well as old tax records, college e-books and personal documents and photos.
Ward County Assistant State’s Attorney Caitlyn Pierson says the judge’s order is appropriate.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Authorities have dropped a second charge against a Bismarck woman accused of abusing and exploiting her elderly mother during protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline.
The Bismarck Tribune reports authorities have dismissed a charge of felony exploitation of a vulnerable adult against Kathleen Bennett. Prosecutor Marina Spahr cited in part the fact that Bennett’s mother has died.
Bennett, 59, was accused of leaving her 82-year-old mother with dementia tied to a chair in a protest camp in North Dakota while she attended demonstrations in December 2016. The mother was taken to a hospital during a blizzard. Hospital staff said she was frail and malnourished.
Bennett also was charged with endangering a vulnerable adult. The defense and prosecution agreed in November to dismiss that case with $2,050 in fines forfeited from Bennett’s bond.
RYDER, N.D. (AP) — Officials have created a fund to ensure the preservation of a 110-year-old cemetery in a small community in central North Dakota.
The Minot Daily News reports that the Ryder Cemetery Historical Preservation Fund was recently established to maintain the Rose Hill Cemetery in Ryder. The permanent fund is being administered by the Minot Area Community Foundation in Minot.
The fund’s board of directors was created with representatives of the city’s past and present churches. All of the fund’s earnings will go toward the cemetery’s preservation.
A letter about the fund says the goal is to raise $200,000, and donations will be accepted in any amount.
The letter says the limited care for the cemetery can be attributed to Ryder’s population decline. Ryder currently has 82 residents.
ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota State University expert says increasingly tight financial times are imminent for the region’s farmers, who are already managing depressed markets.
Jack Davis is a field specialist at the university’s extension service. Davis presented on crop production and income trends for farmers early this month.
The Aberdeen American News reports that Davis has cautioned agriculture producers to expect tight budgets for about two more years.
Davis says farmers will need to manage top costs closely and try to reduce them by at least 5 percent without cutting the yield.
The region’s popular crops, including corn and soybeans, reached record price levels a few years ago. But the prices have dropped, which is causing farmers to struggle.
Davis says producers should focus more time on managing expenses.
ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — State officials say a semi-trailer driver hauling hazardous material to and from the Keystone oil pipeline leak site purposely dumped soil contaminated with crude oil on the side of a northeastern South Dakota road.
Brian Walsh, environmental scientist manager for the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, tells the Aberdeen American News that the semi was returning from taking soil to a landfill in Sawyer, North Dakota.
Walsh says it’s suspected the driver realized there was contaminated soil in his trunk and emptied it in Marshall County before returning to the leak site near Amherst.
Officials do not know the trucking company responsible for dumping the soil, which was discovered last week. Walsh says the weight of the dirt and its oil content are not yet known.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The site of a popular highway sculpture in southwest North Dakota has been closed to the public after new landowners disputed the site’s liability and the sculptor’s lease.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that Seth and Kayla O’Donnell purchased a 28-acre parcel in February that included the site of “Geese in Flight,” the 110-foot tall statue along the Enchanted Highway.
The O’Donnells fenced the sculpture’s access road off in July and argued that the site’s liability is unclear. Court documents show the couple said the sculpture is unsafe and attracts trespassers.
Sculptor Gary Greff sued the couple over the road closure last summer. Greff said the couple doesn’t acknowledge his lease. He turned down their offer to buy the land.
Greff said the trial in March should resolve the lease dispute.

NFL PLAYOFFS… SUNDAY…
UNDATED (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have advanced to the NFL championship game for the first time in eight years, while the Jacksonville Jaguars have earned their first AFC title game appearance since the 1999 season.
Case Keenum connected with Stefon Diggs for a 61-yard touchdown on the game’s final play as the Vikings stunned the Saints 29-24 at Minneapolis. Keenum threw the game-winning pass near the sideline before Diggs wormed his way past the New Orleans defenders and into the end zone. It came 25 seconds after Wil Lutz nailed a 43-yard field goal that put the Saints ahead.
Both the Vikings and Saints lost two leads in the final 3:01. Alvin Kamara’s 14-yard scoring grab put New Orleans ahead for the first time, but the Vikings went back on top when Kai Forbath drilled a 53-yard field goal with 1:29 to play. That was followed by Lutz’s go-ahead field goal 64 seconds later.
Keenum was 25 of 40 passes for 318 yards, one TD and one interception as the Vikings moved within one victory of becoming the first team to host its own Super Bowl appearance.
Saints receiver Michael Thomas grabbed a pair of scoring strikes from Brees, who was 25 of 40 for 294 yards, three TDs and two interceptions.
Minnesota will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles next Sunday.
The Jaguars pulled off a surprise in Pittsburgh as rookie running back Leonard Fournette ran for 109 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-42 victory over the second-seeded Steelers. Fournette had a pair of first-quarter scoring runs before his three-yard TD burst put the Jags ahead 35-21 with 10:34 remaining.
Blake Bortles threw for 214 yards, including a 14-yard scoring pass to fullback Tommy Bohanon that made it 42-28 with 4:19 left. Bortles had no interceptions and was sacked just twice for seven yards.
The Jaguars appeared poised for a rout when Telvin Smith returned a Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH’-lis-bur-gur) interception 50 yards for a TD that made it 28-7 late in the first half. But the Steelers wouldn’t go away as Roethlisberger proceeded to throw four of his five scoring passes.
Roethlisberger passed for 469 yards, and Le’Veon (LEH’-vee-ahn) Bell had 155 total yards and two touchdowns for the Steelers.
Bell’s eight-yard scoring run brought Pittsburgh within 42-35 with 2:18 to go. But with two timeouts remaining and the two-minute warning coming up, the Steelers elected to go for an onside kick that backfired. The decision set up Josh Lambo’s game-clinching field goal.
The Jaguars will take on the New England Patriots in Foxborough next Sunday.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS
UNDATED (AP) — The Arizona Wildcats have hired Kevin Sumlin as their new football coach.
The former Texas A&M head coach is expected to sign a five-year contract, pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents. An introductory news conference is scheduled for Tuesday.
He replaces Rich Rodriguez, who was fired Jan. 2 amid sexual harassment allegations.
Sumlin was fired in November after six seasons at Texas A&M and had reportedly been in the mix for numerous jobs. He went 51-26 with the Aggies and is 84-43 during a 10-year head coaching career that includes four seasons at Houston.
MLB-NEWS
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets have worked out a one-year contract with free agent first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pending a physical.
The 35-year-old Gonzalez was limited to 71 games last season because of a herniated disk in his back, and was left off the Los Angeles Dodgers’ postseason roster. The five-time All-Star is a lifetime .288 hitter with 311 career home runs.
Gonzalez is owed more than $21 million next season, but the Mets would be responsible for just $545,000 if he makes the team.

Caroline Wozniacki was an easy 6-2, 6-3 winner over Michaela Buzarnescu in a first-round match at Melbourne Park. At No. 2, Wozniacki is playing here at her highest seeding since appearing as the top-seeded player at the 2012 Australian Open when she lost in the quarterfinals.
Mem’s Third-seeded Grigor Dimitrov advanced to the second round at the Australian Open for the seventh time with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win over qualifier Dennis Novak.
Add Jack Sock’s name to the list of Americans departing Monday from the Australian Open.
On the same day the U.S. lost eight women’s players, including 2017 finalist Venus Williams and U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens, Sock was defeated by Japan’s Yuichi Sugita of Japan 6-1, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3 in the first round. Sock, who’s never advanced beyond the third round at the Australian Open, was the highest-ranked American man at No. 8 and had his highest seeding at a major. 16th seed John Isner lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Matt Ebden.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump is defending himself anew against accusations that he is racist, this time after recent disparaging comments about Haiti and African nations. “No, No. I’m not a racist,” Trump told reporters who asked him to respond to those who think he is. Trump tells reporters: “I am the least racist person you have ever interviewed.”
HONOLULU (AP) — An emergency alert that mistakenly warned of an inbound ballistic missile showed that many Hawaii residents don’t know what they’re supposed to do if it was real. The blunder that caused more people statewide to fear they were about to be struck by a nuclear missile is feeding skepticism about the government’s ability to keep them informed in a real emergency. The state remained rattled a day after the mistaken alert was blasted out to cellphones with a warning to seek immediate shelter.
HONOLULU (AP) — Associated Press correspondent Caleb Jones was with his 7-year-old daughter at their Honolulu home when state emergency officials mistakenly sent out a cellphone alert warning of a missile heading for Hawaii. Jones experienced the panic that he, like other islanders, felt not knowing for several minutes if the threat was real. Jones began driving himself and his daughter to a Target in Kailua to shelter there _ until a colleague texted the news that it was a false alarm..
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi officials have raised the death toll from a twin suicide bombing in a Baghdad market to 38.
