DeElda “Toots” Suko, 76, of rural Alfred, ND, passed away early Thursday at her home from chronic kidney disease.

DeElda Schumaker was born December 12, 1941, on a farm northwest of Streeter, ND, the youngest girl of Fred and Pauline (Graf) Schumaker. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Streeter. The family moved to a farm six miles west of Streeter where DeElda attended school through the 8th grade. They moved to Streeter where she graduated from Streeter High School in 1959. DeElda attended Beauty College in Bismarck for one year and met Duane Suko that summer. They were married on November 5, 1960 at South St. Paul, MN and made their home on the Suko family farm for a year. DeElda worked as a beautician in Jamestown and Valley City before they moved to Fargo for a short time. They returned to live in Jamestown, then on the family farm and DeElda operated the Beauty Shop in Streeter for five years. In 1971, she and Duane bought the Wes Heinrich Sheep Farm where they raised two boys and helped alongside Duane, operating any type of farm equipment needed. She also drove bus for Gackle Public School and was the head cook for 13 years. DeElda also helped Duane run Mallard Lanes in Gackle and was a cook at the North Dakota State Hospital for 13 years. She was known for her cooking, baking, and love for animals, especially her dog, Trisha.

She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle.

DeElda is survived by her husband, Duane Suko, Alfred; son, Pat (Joan) Suko, Greenfield, MN and their two children, Dakota and Logan; son, Kelly (Valerie) Suko, Bismarck, ND and their two children, Nicholas (Lyndsey) Suko and her daughter, Aubrie, and Lindsay Suko and her child, Ryker. DeElda is also survived by siblings, Olga Spitzer, Streeter, Delores (Alfred) Spitzer, Moorhead, MN, Donna (Gene) Havens, Libby, MT, Arnie (Bev) Schumaker, Jamestown; brother-in-law, Jim Peckam, Moorhead, MN; nieces and nephews, including nephew, Clyde Becker, Napoleon, ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Pauline Schumaker; sister, Hilda Peckam; brothers-in-law, Henry Becker and Alvin Spitzer; and father & mother-in-law, Gotthilf and Leona Suko.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, ND with Rev. Rick Steele officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 22, 2018 at the church.

Prayer Service: 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 22, 2018 at the church.

Interment: Gackle Cemetery, Gackle, ND.
