THOMPSON, N.D. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of two women killed when a minivan transporting residents of a nursing home collided head-on with a car in northeastern North Dakota.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol identifies the victims as 59-year-old Lynette Ysteboe and 97-year-old Alpha Flatten, both of Hatton. Authorities say the women were passengers in a minivan owned by and transporting residents of Hatton Prairie Village nursing home in Hatton.
The van collided with a Nissan Altima on Highway 15 near Thompson on Thursday morning.
Authorities say the westbound Nissan was negotiating a curve in the frost-covered road when it crossed the center line and collided with the eastbound van.
The drivers were taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks with non-life-threatening injuries.
SISSETON, S.D. (AP) — One person is dead and another seriously injured after a pickup crash in northeastern South Dakota.
The Highway Patrol says a 2007 Ford Crew Cab was southbound on Interstate 29 when it left the road and rolled north of Sisseton Saturday morning.
A 23-year-old woman who was a passenger was thrown from the pickup and died at the scene. The 28-year-old man who was driving suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
Neither was wearing a seat belt. Authorities say charges are pending against the driver.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Revised numbers show North Dakota’s oil industry failed to meet the state’s natural gas flaring goals in October.
The latest numbers from the Mineral Resources Department show the industry flared slightly more than 16 percent of natural gas produced in October — not 15 percent as the agency reported from preliminary figures.
North Dakota’s Industrial Commission requires companies to flare no more than 15 percent, to reduce wasteful flaring. Regulators can limit oil production for companies that fail to meet the target. But the policy also includes many exceptions, making restrictions rare.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that 11 companies flared more than 15 percent in October, but none of them were ordered to limit oil production because they met one of the conditions in the policy.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A hot soup and sandwich cafe in North Dakota has reopened more than two years after losing its lease on a former location.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that the new and expanded Heaven’s Helpers Soup Cafe offers free food six days a week, with freewill donations accepted. It’s located in Bismarck near the former Ruth Meiers Hospitality House men’s emergency shelter, which closed in October.
Executive Director Mark Meier says that some challenges the cafe faced to reopen, included raising $250,000 and relying on thousands of volunteer hours to help with renovations. He encourages people who would normally go to a restaurant for lunch to stop at the cafe and give a donation.
The volunteer-run cafe first opened in 2009 but lost its lease in June 2015.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A park district in northern North Dakota is planning to add new parks, trails and recreation areas for residents and visitors.
The Minot Park District announced plans for cross-country, mountain bike and multi-use trails, a neighborhood park in east Minot and a new 18-hole golf course and recreation area.
Parks Director Ron Merritt tells the Minot Daily News that the district is seeking approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its new trails, which would be located on a former Superfund site.
The concept for the east Minot park includes a multi-use sports court, playground, dog park, restrooms and parking. Merritt says the park’s development is still a year or two away.
The park district is working with architects to move forward with the golf course. Meritt says the district has enough money set aside to get started.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A government shutdown is stretching into the workweek, after the Senate failed to reach an agreement to reopen federal agencies. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said negotiations were continuing through Sunday night. Under one proposal taking shape, Democrats would agree to a three-week spending measure in return for a commitment from GOP Senate leaders to address immigration policy and other pressing legislative matters in the coming weeks.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats so far are sticking together in trying to force a spending bill that would include protections for young immigrants. That’s mostly due to the work of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, arguably the most powerful Democrat in Washington. But Schumer’s task isn’t an easy one. He has to balance the demands of a liberal base eager for a fight with President Donald Trump and Democrats representing red states who are anxious about their re-election prospects this fall.
BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian activists and rescue teams say the government launched an attack with suspected poisonous gas that affected nearly 20 civilians in a rebel-held suburb near Damascus. The team of first responders known as White Helmets says the attack hit a neighborhood in the Douma district early on Monday. It says the rescuers evacuated more than 20 civilians, most of them women and children from the area who were suffering breathing difficulties, which they say was hit with suspected chlorine attack.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Dozens of Palestinians are demonstrating in the West Bank city of Nablus against the visit of Vice President Mike Pence to Israel. Protesters chanted against President Donald Trump and stepped on pictures of Pence in a sign of anger. Some shouted: “Trump you are pig. May God demolish your home. How mean you are!” The Palestinians are furious at Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Shakil Afridi has languished in jail for years _ since 2011, when the Pakistani doctor used a vaccination scam in an attempt to identify Osama bin Laden’s home, aiding U.S. Navy Seals who tracked and killed the al-Qaida leader. And though Americans might wonder how Pakistan could imprison a man who helped track down the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, Pakistanis are apt to ask why the United States betrayed its trust with a secret nighttime raid that shamed the Pakistani military.
