Areas of fog will reduce visibilities to between one quarter and one half mile through early Thursday afternoon.

Fog across the region Thursday  morning was lifting in some areas
and increasing in others.

Coverage of the dense fog has been rather patchy, so travelers should be aware of rapidly changing visibilities.

The moisture from the fog along with sub-freezing
temperatures also brings the possibility of slick spots on
untreated surfaces.

The fog will continue in some areas for much of Thursday morning before decreasing in the  afternoon as winds increase.

Bismarck  (CSi)  The ND Veterans Coordinating Council which is comprised of three members from each of the following five North Dakota Veterans organizations; the American Legion, VFW, DAV, AMVETS, and VVA has approved of a design for the new North Dakota Commemorative Memorial Coin. This coin is commonly known as a “Funeral Honor Coin” and will be conferred upon a family member of a deceased North Dakota Veteran during military funeral honors.

Although the coins design has been approved the coin will not be made available to the families until the funds have been raised. ND Department of Veterans Affairs has been charged with soliciting from the public funds to purchase at least 4,000 coins. This will be enough coins to provide a two-year supply for the presentation of one coin to a family member by a North Dakota Funeral Honors team. This project originated with Senator Sorvaag of Fargo ND. With his help SB 2183 passed the 65th Legislative Assembly.

Through a bidding process the ND Department of Veterans Affairs has determined it must raise at least $12,000 before the first batch of 4,000 coins can be ordered. Once the funds have been raised the coins will be purchased and distributed across North Dakota. ND Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner stated: “Time is important as we would like to ensure as many families of North Dakota Veterans receive this token of appreciation for their loved ones military service”.

This project originated with Senator Sorvaag of Fargo ND. With his help SB 2183 passed the 65th Legislative Assembly. BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The mayor of Colfax, North Dakota, says an investigation into alleged student misbehavior at the small town’s school that might involve sexual misconduct is “a very sensitive issue” for the community.

Scott Gauslow declined to comment further on talk in town that the alleged misbehavior might involve younger students being sexually violated in a darkened male locker room by older students. He called the situation “bad for the community.”

Eighteen-year-old senior Gavin Hill-Olson says he witnessed what he called “hazing” and put a stop to it. He wouldn’t provide details, but called the incident “inappropriate” and “pathetic.”

Jenny Schmitt, a parent in the district, cautioned against jumping to conclusions while an investigation is pending.

Both the school and the Richland County Sheriff’s Office are investigating. Superintendent Tim Godfrey says some students have been “removed” from classes “for their safety and (that of) others.”

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo woman has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison in the death of a man who fell from the hood of the vehicle she was driving.

Police say 33-year-old Joshua Fonder fell from the vehicle driven by 28-year-old Alicia Johnson last May, and died a week later from a head injury.

Johnson reached a deal with prosecutors in which she pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident involving death, and prosecutors dropped a manslaughter charge.

Court documents show she was sentenced Monday, and given credit for six months already served behind bars. She’ll be on probation for two years following her prison time. She also was ordered to pay about $1,000 in restitution.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A man sentenced to life behind bars for fatally beating a woman behind a Bismarck store last year plans to appeal his conviction.

The Bismarck Tribune says Morris Brickle-Hicks filed the notice of appeal weeks after he was sentenced for killing 40-year-old Misty Coffelt and leaving her to die behind Runnings in April 2016. Brickle-Hicks was convicted of felony murder.

Last month, South Central Judge John Grinsteiner sentenced the 35-year-old to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Miss America Cara Mund will attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday as the guest of U.S. Sen. John Hoeven.

Mund is a 23-year-old Bismarck native. She won the Miss America competition last September. She’s the first winner from North Dakota in the history of the nearly century-old scholarship pageant.

Hoeven is a North Dakota Republican. He says Mund is “a wonderful example of the bright young people we have in our state.”

U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer has invited Fisher Industries CEO Tommy Fisher as his guest. Fisher Industries is based in Dickinson.

U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp hasn’t announced her guest.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger says he will seek re-election for a second full term.

The 35-year-old Republican was appointed in 2013 by Gov. Jack Dalrymple and elected by voters in 2014.

Rauschenberger says the agency has made big improvements during his tenure but more needs to be done.

Rauschenberger publicly revealed his alcoholism soon after he was appointed by Dalrymple in 2013. He underwent treatment at a Minnesota facility that same year during his successful run to be elected to the post.

Last year, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence. He was given a 10-day suspended jail sentence and put on unsupervised probation for a year.

Rauschenberger says he has “dramatically improved” his health and is working with an addiction counselor.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Developers of a $98 million high-rise complex planned in downtown Fargo have found a new hotel partner.

Chicago-based Aparium Hotel Group will be the third partner in the 18-story Block 9 Project.

Aparium will replace TMI Hospitality, which pulled out of the project about five months ago. The other two partners are the Kilbourne Group founded by philanthropist Gov. Doug Burgum and the R.D. Offutt Company.

The project planned for what is now a parking lot will include office and retail space, a hotel, condominiums, a parking ramp and a renovated city plaza.

City commissioners last year approved $15.5 million in tax breaks for the project. It’s expected to break ground sometime this year and open in 2020.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State Sen. Bill Bowman says he will not run for re-election this fall due to poor health.

The 72-year-old Republican from Bowman, North Dakota says he’s been in and out of the hospital since last year for a variety of reasons.

Bowman says he doesn’t want to retire from the Legislature but he can’t continue. He also had major heart surgeries in 1997 and 2000.

Bowman is an auctioneer and cattleman. He represents District 39, North Dakota’s largest legislative district, which stretches from near Williston to the South Dakota border.

He was first elected to the Senate in 1990.

Bowman was the Republican candidate for agriculture commissioner in 1992, losing to Democrat Sarah Vogel. He also is former football fullback at Dickinson State University and a U.S. Army veteran.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A federal grand jury has indicted two Canadians and their company on criminal charges stemming from an explosion that injured three workers at an eastern Montana oil recycling plant.

Custom Carbon Processing, its president Peter Margiotta and project manager Mark Hurst face charges of conspiracy, endangerment and Clean Air Act violations, according to the indictment unsealed last week.

Prosecutors say the two men ignored warnings from a company foreman leading up to the Dec. 29, 2012 explosion near Wibaux along the Montana-North Dakota border.

The blast sparked a fire that burned eight days.

Margiotta and Hurst did not appear for their January 11 arraignment. They would have to be extradited to face trial and could not be located for comment.

Court documents show they haven’t been served with the indictment.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Federal safety records show 10 workers have died over the past decade at well sites linked to drilling contractor Patterson-UTI, the same driller involved in this week’s rig explosion in Oklahoma that killed five workers.

An analysis of Occupational Safety and Health Administration data shows the previous accidents happened at drilling sites in Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Texas.

The company also was fined nearly $367,000 over the past 10 years for more than 140 safety violations.

Houston-based Patterson-UTI said in a statement it has embraced safety improvements and spent millions of dollars in recent years on worker training and protective equipment.

Monday’s blast appears to be the deadliest oil and gas industry accident since the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion off the Louisiana coast that killed 11 workers.

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — President Donald Trump has arrived in the Swiss Alps to attend the World Economic Forum. Trump flew to the town of Davos by helicopter from Zurich, where he arrived Thursday morning after flying overnight from Washington.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is sounding more definitive about being interviewed as part of the special counsel’s investigation into Russian election interference and Trump’s possible obstruction in the firing of the FBI director. Trump said at the White House on Wednesday, before departing on a trip to Europe, that he’s “looking forward” to being questioned. Two weeks ago, Trump said such an interview “seems unlikely.”

XIANGYANG, China (AP) — China Labor Watch helped workers win over $420,000 in back pay from an iPhone supplier. But when it exposed abuses at Ivanka Trump suppliers, its investigators landed in jail. Those arrests are part of Ivanka Trump’s legacy in China, a legacy critics say could be quite different if she wanted to expand worker rights in the country that produces the bulk of her products.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — “I just signed your death warrant.” That’s what a judge in Michigan told former sports doctor Larry Nassar as the judge sentenced him Wednesday to up to 175 years for molesting young female athletes, some of them Olympic gymnasts. More than 150 accusers described in court how Nassar abused them. The 54-year-old must first serve a 60-year federal sentence for child porn charges.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Female hockey players from the rival Koreas have been paired up to form their first-ever Olympic team during next month’s Pyeongchang Winter Games, as their countries press ahead with rare reconciliation steps following a period of nuclear tensions. A dozen North Korean hockey players wearing white-and-red winter parkas crossed the heavily fortified border into South Korea on Thursday. The North and South Korean players shouted “We are one!” and posed for a group photo.
