MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Some landowners in Minot are warning against the city’s proposed landfill expansion out of concern it will invade or devalue their property.

The Minot City Council approved a decision in April to spend $4 million to acquire about two quarters of land next to the city’s landfill. Minot is in the permitting stage to rezone and make use of the acquired land. A city consultant is also working on a renewal application for the existing landfill that includes the new acres.

Minot resident LaVerne Mikkelson owns land abutting the proposed expansion. Mikkelson tells the Minot Daily News that the city is opening itself to a lawsuit.

The Minot Planning Commission tabled the issue regarding moving the landfill closer to residences in November, but could add it to the agenda during the Jan. 29 meeting.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The National Weather Service’s flood outlook for the Souris River Basin in northern North Dakota had little to do with high water. Quite the opposite.

The Minot Daily News says the report issued Friday shows that the biggest risk coming out of the spring snowmelt is drought. The weather service says there is not enough moisture for a “normal runoff.”

All of the agency’s reporting points along the Souris River are given a less than 5 percent chance of reaching minor flood stage. The projections are similar for the Des Lacs River, a major tributary that joins the Souris at Burlington.

The weather service says snowfall in the Minot region is tracking well below normal, as is snow on the ground throughout the Souris River Basin.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Truckloads of road salt used to keep highways ice-free in the winter are starting to take a toll on the environment.

Researchers say they’re finding rising salt levels in hundreds of lakes, especially in the Northeast and Midwest where sodium chloride is used most. The findings are raising fears that salting roads could put everything from microscopic zooplankton to fish at risk in coming decades.

The environmental concerns — and a desire to reduce costs — have prompted public works agencies in many states and cities to search for ways to cut their salt use. They have turned to high-tech equipment to spread salt more efficiently and better weather forecasting to time their salting. Others are using liquefied organic additives such as beet juice and even cheese brine that help salt stick to pavement.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ronda Rousey has ditched UFC for WWE.

Once the most dangerous women in MMA, Rousey officially made the anticipated jump to WWE on Sunday night with a surprise appearance at the Royal Rumble in Philadelphia.

The former UFC bantamweight champion also told ESPN that she’s fully committed to wrestling and not just planning cameos at WWE’s biggest events.

She says, “This is my life now. Yeah, they have first priority on my time for the next several years.  This is not a smash and grab, this is not a publicity stunt.”

Rousey appeared to roaring fans Sunday night after the women’s Royal Rumble in Philadelphia, and pointed to a WrestleMania sign — scheduled for New Orleans in April — as Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation” blared through the arena.

Rousey smiled when Royal Rumble winner Asuka slapped her hand away on an offer for a handshake. Rousey left the ring and walked over to WWE executive and Royal Rumble commentator Stephanie McMahon. Rousey shook hands with McMahon and left without saying a word. She slapped hands with fans at ringside.

Rousey told WWE.com. “”This has been a dream of mine since me and all my girlfriends would sit around and watch wrestling together,” No matter how much I tried to do other things in my life, this kept following me around. It’s time to take a hint from the universe and go for it.”

UNDATED (AP) — The New England Patriots don’t need any help in beating opponents, but they tend to get it from their opponents themselves. Other teams tend to make mistakes against New England when they try to do something extraordinary to vanquish the five-time champs. Doug Pederson and the Philadelphia Eagles swear they won’t fall into that trap in Super Bowl 52.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has proven before that he can deliver a stately speech, such as last year’s address to Congress. But his challenge has always been sticking with the script afterward, when he often succumbs to unscripted remarks that undercut his own efforts. This Tuesday, Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address. It’s expected to be his biggest test yet of his ability to stay on track as the White House rolls out policies building on it.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan officials have raised the death toll from a morning attack on a military academy in Kabul to 11 troops killed and 16 wounded. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the assault, saying it targeted the academy. A defense ministry spokesman says the fighting lasted several hours before the soldiers repelled the attackers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — At least two Republican senators are expressing concerns about reports that President Donald Trump tried to fire special counsel Robert Mueller. Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Susan Collins of Maine say Mueller should review whether Trump tried to fire him last year. And both senators say legislation to protect Mueller might be needed. Graham says he hasn’t seen evidence of collusion with the Russians, “but the investigation needs to go forward without political interference.”
