Jamestown (CSi-JAGST) The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team will present “Soup for the Soul” on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at the James River Senior Center, located at the Legacy Center, 419 5th Street NE, Jamestown, ND (use the west door on 4th Ave NE across from Lincoln School). The theme of this evening is “Grieving the Loss of a Pet”
The death of a companion animal unquestionably causes grief. The family pet is not just a dog or a cat; it’s a member of the family. Our pets offer us constant companionship, acceptance and unconditional love. Studies have shown that pets can lower blood pressure, change heart rate and alleviate feelings of loneliness. With the death of that pet, a family experiences a significant loss.
With these things in mind the Jamestown Area Grief Support Team has put together of panel of experts including veterinarian, Dr. Dawn Entzminger, Reverend Tom Eckstein, Clarice Snow and Gary Sahr of the James River Humane Society and Kaye John from Prairie Paws Rescue. Panel members will discuss the affects of the loss of a beloved pet and share ideas on how to handle that loss.
Everyone is welcome to share in this informal evening that includes a meal of soup. The program is free and open to all. Please bring a picture of your pet. For more information on this program or the Jamestown Area Grief Support Team, please call Diane at 320-4915.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Winter wheat and livestock in North Dakota appear to be weathering the winter fairly well, though dry conditions persist in the state.
The Agriculture Department says in its monthly crop report that all but 15 percent of the state’s winter wheat crop is rated fair, good or excellent.
Cattle and calf conditions are rated 78 percent good to excellent, with death losses average to light.
Hay supplies are rated 64 percent adequate to surplus, and stock water supplies are 73 percent in those categories.
However, only about half of the topsoil and subsoil moisture supplies in the state are rated adequate to surplus. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor Map shows that nearly all of central and western North Dakota remains in moderate-to-severe drought.
Update…
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Five workers at North Dakota’s Youth Correctional Center outside of Mandan received medical attention after being assaulted by a number of juveniles over the weekend, but they weren’t seriously injured.
State Corrections Department spokeswoman Michelle Linster says “several” juveniles were involved in the assault at the facility Sunday night. She declined to comment on the nature of the incident, including whether the workers were targeted or were assaulted when intervening in some sort of situation.
Linster says the workers were all male and all worked in supervisory or security roles. She says none are missing any work time due to the incident.
The Highway Patrol is investigating because it happened on state property.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Fargo says a priest in central North Dakota was attacked on church property.
Diocese spokesman Paul Braun says the Rev. Robert Wapenski was physically assaulted Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Church in Anamoose. Braun referred further questions to law enforcement.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office did not return a phone message to The Associated Press.
Anamoose is about 60 miles southeast of Minot.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A second man has been charged in a case in which a Bismarck police officer shot and wounded a man who’s accused of trying to hit the officer with a vehicle.
Thirty-two-year-old Juan Nunez is accused of helping 22-year-old Ulises Villalobos-Alvarado avoid apprehension. He could enter a plea March 5 to a felony charge of hindering law enforcement.
Villalobos-Alvarado faces felony charges of attempted murder and fleeing. He’s accused of trying to run over a Bismarck officer who subsequently shot him in the arm.
Bond has been set for him at $500,000.
The incident happened Jan. 18 as authorities were conducting a probation search. He later turned himself in at a gas station in Brookings, South Dakota.
Court documents don’t say where Nunez is from, and his relationship to Villalobos-Alvarado is unclear. Both men remain jailed.
VELVA, N.D. (AP) — Farmers Union Oil Co. has cut some workers and services at its Velva and Drake branches.
Interim General Manager Cameron Erickson tells the Minot Daily News that shops at the two locations have been closed due to financial losses.
Thirteen full- or part-time people were laid off in Drake, though one was hired back full time and two were hired back part time to continue to operate the convenience store.
In Velva, the convenience store will remain open, but the company has closed its downtown shop with automotive repair. The hardware, auto parts and tire lines also have been discontinued. The building will continue to house the main offices of the company.
Three people were laid off in Velva.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says two deer have tested positive for chronic wasting disease in the southwestern part of the state.
The department says a whitetail buck and a mule deer doe taken during the 2017 deer gun season from Unit 3F2 were found to have the deadly deer disease.
Eleven deer have tested positive for CWD in North Dakota since 2009. All were from the same unit. The Game and Fish Department implemented special regulations in 3F2 and surrounding units in 2010 to prevent the disease from spreading.
In addition to the 350 samples tested for CWD from unit 3F2, another 1,050 were tested from deer taken last fall by hunters in the central third of the state, and from any moose or elk taken during the hunting season.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Game and Fish Department is reminding hunters that personal items need to be removed from all wildlife management areas by the end of the month.
The Wednesday deadline applies to tree stands, hunting blinds, steps and other personal items such as cameras.
Items not removed are considered abandoned property and are subject to confiscation by the state.

Jamestown (uj.edu) — For 23 minutes and 55 seconds, the Jimmie men’s basketball team was unable to get much separation from a scrappy Trinity Bible College squad.
However, a 27-0 second half run turned a seven-point game into a 34-point cushion, and Jamestown rolled to an 86-47 win over the Lions Tuesday night at Harold Newman Arena.
Jon Purintun (JR/Linton, N.D.) scored to put UJ up 2-0 11 seconds into the contest, but Trinity Bible used a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead. The Lions led for nearly six-and-a-half mintues until a Sam Johnson (SR/Mora, Minn.) three-pointer gave the Jimmies a 15-14 lead with 12:19 in the half.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jordan Bohannon led six Hawkeyes in double figures with 20 points and Iowa rolled past Minnesota 94-80 on Tuesday night, its second straight home win.
Tyler Cook scored 17 points with 10 rebounds and Isaiah Moss had 16 for the Hawkeyes (12-12, 3-8 Big Ten), who’ve split their last six league games after starting 0-5 in the conference.
Iowa opened the game on an 11-1 run before it resorted to its typical shoddy defense, allowing Minnesota (14-10, 3-8) to jump back out front late in the first half. But Iowa rallied with a 13-4 run to open up a 50-37 lead.
The Gophers tried to keep pace, but the Hawkeyes caught fire from beyond 3-point range — at one point hitting five out of six in the second half to go up 70-58.
Jordan Murphy had 21 points and 17 rebounds and Davonte Fitzgerald scored 16 for Minnesota. Gophers sophomore guard Amir Coffey (14 points per game) sat out after tweaking his injured right shoulder in a loss to Northwestern last week.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) — New England Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski says he expects to play in Sunday’s Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gronkowski has been in the league’s concussion protocol after taking a hit from Jacksonville’s Barry Church in the AFC championship game. He made his first public appearance on Tuesday night while playing former teammate and current Eagles running back LeGarrette Blount in a game of “Madden 18” at the Mall of America.
Gronkowski said he’s still in the concussion protocol and would leave his status up to the doctors.

In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump used his first official State of the Union address to highlight a strong economy and the tax overhaul he signed late last year. Addressing a deeply divided Congress and nation, the president also appealed for unity — challenging lawmakers to tackle immigration policies as he redoubled his recent pledge to offer a path to citizenship for 1.8 million young immigrants.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Twitter went wild with speculation when first lady Melania Trump showed up for her husband’s first State of the Union address wearing a white pantsuit. Some wondered sarcastically if the choice of attire was a tribute to Hillary Clinton, known for wearing pantsuits. Some suggested she was honoring the suffragettes, who made white their signature color. Her suit was in contrast to the black worn by Democratic congresswomen and their allies.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. military prison at Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay to remain open and ready to accept enemy combatants. His predecessor, Barack Obama, tried to close the controversial facility. Trump defended his decision during his State of the Union address, saying the U.S. must be able to detain and question terrorists when necessary. European allies, Muslim leaders and others have criticized how detainees have been held for decades without charge.
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Former sports doctor Larry Nassar is returning to court to face another prison sentence for molesting gymnasts. The hearing starting Wednesday could unfold much the same as a hearing last week in another Michigan county. The judge has set aside several days for roughly 60 people who want to confront Nassar or have their statement read in court. The case in Eaton County centers on his assaults at Twistars. The Lansing-area gymnastics club was run by 2012 Olympic coach John Geddert.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Over the objections of the Justice Department, President Donald Trump says he’s “100 percent” in favor of releasing a classified memo on the Russia investigation. Trump was overheard expressing his full support to a GOP lawmaker for the release after his State of the Union speech Tuesday night. Republicans have said the memo reveals improper use of surveillance by the FBI and the Justice Department in the Russia probe. Democrats have called it a selectively edited group of GOP talking points.
