OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A report says a business conditions index for nine Midwest and Plains states slipped over the past month but still pointed to continuing improvement in regional economic conditions.

The report released Thursday says the Mid-America Business Conditions Index dropped to 57.3 in January from 59.0 in December. The November figure was 57.2.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says manufacturing and other business sectors in the region are adding jobs at a solid pace.

The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth in that factor. A score below that suggests decline.

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Former North Dakota Republican Party Chairman Gary Emineth says he’s running for U.S. Senate.

Emineth said Wednesday in an interview on WDAY-AM that he’s entering the race for the seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.

Emineth, a Bismarck businessman, said earlier this week he began considering a run after U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer passed up a challenge to Heitkamp.

The news release states:

“I am pleased and honored to announce my candidacy for the United States Senate. And, I look forward to working with President Trump removing obstacles to the American dream. Like me, President Trump is not a Rockefeller Republican, he is a streetfighter. As a blue-collar conservative I look forward advancing policies, aiding ranchers, pipeline operators, floor hands on drilling rigs, equipment operators, and so many other hard working blue-collar professions.  The Senate does not need another Rockefeller Republican – going along to get along. The House through the leadership of Speaker Ryan and President Trump have taken responsibility for middle class Americans. It’s time for the Senate to do the same.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Supporters of amending the North Dakota constitution to include a sweeping government ethics overhaul have turned in a proposed initiative to put the issue on the November ballot.

With voters’ approval, the initiative billed as an “anti-corruption amendment” would ban foreign money from elections, restrict lobbying and create an independent ethics commission, among other provisions.

Democratic lawmakers have been unsuccessfully pushing for years to establish an ethics commission in North Dakota. It’s one of only a handful of states without such a panel.

Supporters need almost 27,000 signatures by July 9 to get it on the November ballot.

The sponsoring committee is headed by Bismarck Republican Dina Butcher and Ellen Chaffee, a Democrat and former president of Mayville and Valley City State universities.

OLY-KOREAS-OLYMPICS

GANGNEUNG, South Korea (AP) — North Korean skiers and skaters arrived today at a South Korean airport to participate in the Winter Olympics that has brought a temporary lull in tensions surrounding their country’s nuclear program.

The 32-member delegation includes 10 athletes who were invited to compete in the alpine and cross-country skiing, figure skating and shot-track speed skating events in the Pyeongchang Games.

The North Koreans ignored reporters’ questions and made beelines for the buses parked outside the terminal amid a heavy police presence.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI has gone public with its concerns about a classified GOP memo on the Russia investigation _ openly clashing with President Donald Trump. In a sharp statement, the FBI says it has “grave concerns” about material omissions of fact that impact the memo’s accuracy.
