Bismarck  (Jamestown Chamber) – Mayor, Katie Anderson; Tammy Dillman, Central Valley Health; Corry Shevlin, Jamestown-Stutsman Development Corporation; Dr. Polly Peterson and Tena Lawrence from the University of Jamestown; Kendra Krueger, American Heart Association; David Klein and Cassie DuBray from Great Plains Housing, and Becky Thatcher-Keller, Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce were some of the Jamestown participants who attended the 2018 Main Street ND Summit on Feb. 12-13 at the Bismarck Event Center.

The Main Street ND Summit was a gathering of local and national community development experts and advocates to share best practices and engage community leaders, entrepreneurs, students and interested citizens in envisioning North Dakota’s future.

Chamber Executive, Becky Thatcher-Keller says, “It was a very informative conference, with some outstanding speakers from around the country.  It gives me hope that Jamestown is on the right track with what we are doing, but we do have a long way to go before we can embrace the quality of life I would like to see for our residents, new employees and visitors.  We currently have some great anchor tenants on our main street, but we need to work on filling in the gaps to bring a good diversity of business to the community.  It is important to provide a “walkable” community as well, and with some of the projects that are happening or will happen soon, I believe our walkable score will improve.”

The Main Street ND Summit served as a forum for information on the community planning principles behind the three pillars of Burgum’s Main Street Initiative: a skilled workforce; smart, efficient infrastructure; and healthy, vibrant communities to help North Dakota compete in a 21st century economy in which rapid technological advancement is changing every job, industry and organization. Additional information is available at www.MainStreetND.com.

Governor Doug Burgum says, “The Summit provided us an opportunity to work in concert with leaders to shape the future of North Dakota, by facilitating resources and providing the tools to help businesses grow and communities thrive.  Reinvigorated communities are the key to a strong future in North Dakota.”

The Main Street ND Summit was hosted by Gov. Burgum and the North Dakota Department of Commerce.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation is urging the community to participate in Governor Doug Burgum’s Main Street Initiative.

JSDC/CEO, Connie Ova says,  community leaders have chosen to participate in Governor Burgum’s Main Street initiative. Every community has unique opportunities and challenges, and a survey is available and is one tool being used to help identify strategies for the community.

This survey asks questions about livability, why you live in your community and what amenities would make it better.

She says, by joining the process it will help shape the future of the  community. The insight gathered will help leaders and a cross-agency state team, develop collaborative strategies to create vibrant cities poised to attract and retain a 21st century workforce.

She pointed out that the better the response rate, the more on-target future goals will be.

She asks that the survey be completed ASAP and preferably before 2/23/18. Take the survey now at:

KFGO radio reports that the blaze at the Magellan Partners facility on Main Avenue in West Fargo was reported at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday. West Fargo Fire Chief Dan Fuller says a passerby noticed flames at the base of one of the large tanks.

Fuller says it was a non-pressurized tank and there were no concerns about an explosion.

West Fargo and Fargo fire crews responded to the fire along with a hazardous materials team. Special firefighting crews from Grand Forks Air Force Base and Hector International Airport were also called to assist. A drone was also used to allow officials to get a view of the fire from above the tank.

Russell says the thefts allegedly occurred between June, 2009 and February, 2017. She says additional charges are possible.

Court documents do not list an attorney for Red Bear.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Trump administration is once again calling for the complete elimination of low-income heating assistance. And once again, program supporters are vowing to fight it.

The administration is using the same arguments from a year ago when it tried to abolish the program, saying it’s rife with fraud and that no one would be left freezing if the program goes away.

Those claims were widely discredited a year ago.

The National Energy Assistance Directors’ Association called President Donald Trump’s arguments “very misleading and wrong.”

Trump ultimately funded the program this winter after his original proposal a year ago encountered resistance from Congress.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot residents whose homes were damaged by the 2011 Souris River flooding or are being bought out for flood protection might be eligible to up to $60,000 for help purchasing another home.

Jimmie Basketball…

Women

ABERDEEN, S.D. (uj.edu) — The eighth-ranked Jimmie women’s basketball team outscored Presentation (S.D.) 20-3 in the second quarter, turning a slim three-point first quarter lead into a 20-point halftime cushion on the way to an 81-57 win Saturday afternoon.

The win gave Jamestown (27-3 overall, 16-0 North Star Athletic Association) its second undefeated conference season in the last three years. UJ was 12-0 in 2015-16, before the NSAA went to balanced scheduling.

Perhaps more impressive than the three second quarter points allowed by the Jimmie defense was the fact that of Presentation’s 14 field goals in the game, 11 of them were three-pointers. The Saints shot just 3-of-25 on two-point shots and were just 14-of-55 (25.5 percent) for the game.

The Jimmies will host Waldorf (Iowa) Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the opening round of the NSAA postseason tournament. Presentation, the sixth seed in the conference tournament, travels to No. 3 seed Bellevue (Neb.) on Wednesday.

ABERDEEN, S.D.– Leighton Sampson (SR/Worthington, Minn.) posted a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebound to help lead the 23rd-ranked Jimmie men’s basketball team to a 76-71 win over Presentation (S.D.) Saturday evening.

Jamestown (20-9 overall, 9-7 North Star Athletic Association) will enter the postseason conference tournament as the number two seed by way of tiebreaker, and will host seventh seed Viterbo (Wis.) on Thursday.

In world and national news…

PARKLAND, Fla. (AP) — Students who escaped the deadly school shooting in Florida are focusing their anger at President Donald Trump, contending that his response to the attack has been needlessly divisive. David Hogg, a 17-year-old student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, said: ‘You’re the president. You’re supposed to bring this nation together, not divide us.’

After more than a day of criticism from the students, the White House says the president would hold a “listening session” with unspecified students on Wednesday and meet with state and local security officials Thursday.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump spent much of the holiday weekend at his Florida estate, watching cable television news, grousing to club members and advisers and fuming over the Russia investigation.

Trump vented on Twitter about the investigation, raging at the FBI for what he perceived to be a fixation on the Russia investigation at the cost of failing to deter an attack at a nearby high school. He made little mention of the Florida school shooting victims and the escalating gun control debate.

But while Kim’s decision to send a team to Pyeongchang made a political splash, North Korea’s athletes have battled for dead last in most of their competitions. It appears Kim’s country has a lot of work to do.

WASHINGTON (AP) — What would happen if you go to vote in Minnesota and you’re wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat or a tea party T-shirt or a MoveOn.org button?

Remove it or cover it up, a poll worker is likely to say.

Minnesota, like a number of states, bars voters from wearing political items to the polls. Its law is meant to reduce the potential for confrontations or voter intimidation.

The Supreme Court later this month will consider a challenge to the state’s law, in a case that could affect other states.

The group behind the challenge says the case is about free speech rights for all Americans.

Minnesota says the law is a “reasonable restriction” that preserves “order and decorum in the polling place” and prevents “voter confusion and intimidation.”
