New information…

Bismarck  (CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol has updated the accident report, with details on the I-94 crash in the westbound lane, about 2:30p.m.,  Monday in the area of the 45th Street bridge in Fargo.

Sgt. Hendrickson reports, the crash involved a 2008 Dodge Caravan, and a 2003 Jeep Liberty.

The update says, the Jeep Liberty, drive by 25 year old Danielle Pitzen, was entering I-94 EB from 45th St S when Pitzen lost control, went through the median and entered the westbound lanes of I-94 facing north and was struck by a westbound Dodge Caravan. Pitzen was ejected from the Jeep and came to rest on I-94. Pitzen was transported to Essentia Health with life threatening injuries.

The Dodge Caravan, now identified as  driven by  51 year old Yaacoub Shaia, was traveling west on I-94 in the left lane at approximately 55 mph. Shaia stated he saw the jeep lose control and attempted to slow his vehicle to avoid a crash but was unsuccessful. The front of the Caravan struck the passenger side of the Jeep. Shaia was transported to the Sanford Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Speed and icy road conditions are a factor in this crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the NDHP.

The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by Fargo Police, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the Fargo Fire Department and theNDDOT.

A section of I-94 was that was closed following the crash reopened to traffic about 4-p.m.

Traffic was at a standstill for two miles from University Drive South to Exit 349B, where traffic was being rerouted while crews worked on the scene.

Snowplows helped block lanes along with squad cars, and traffic in the eastbound lanes were met with reduced speeds near the scene of the crash.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The superintendent of a North Dakota high school where an alleged hazing incident led to charges against five boys says he’ll resign at the end of the school year.

The attorney for Richland 44 Superintendent Tim Godfrey issued a statement to The Associated Press saying Godfrey had been cleared by the school board of any wrongdoing but wants “to extricate himself from a dysfunctional environment and to pursue other professional opportunities.”

The school board placed Godfrey on paid leave March 1, and was scheduled to hold a special meeting Wednesday on his future.

Board President Lisa Amundson didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Authorities in mid-February referred five boys to juvenile court following alleged misconduct in the boys’ locker room. Offenses included felonious restraint, terrorizing, hazing and sexual assault.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A man stabbed in the throat at a Bismarck motel told police he has no idea who attacked him.

The 40-year-old victim was treated Monday at a hospital where he said he was beaten and stabbed in the throat with a drywall saw at his motel room.

The Bismarck Tribune says the man told police he had earlier been drinking with two men and a woman in his room and told them to leave. He says they may have taken a room key from him and later re-entered his room.

Police Sgt. Mark Buschena says the man was also treated for a cut on the top of his head. There’s no word on his condition.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s attorney general says companies growing or distributing medical marijuana are not subject to the state’s law banning corporate farming.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem’s opinion is in response to an inquiry by state health officer Mylynn Tufte about how the law would apply. The state’s anti-corporate farming law includes horticulture in its definition. The Bismarck Tribune reports Stenehjem says although medical marijuana will be grown using horticultural techniques, there’s nothing in the law that requires a compassion center to be located on farmland.

Compassion centers include two medical marijuana manufacturing facilities and eight dispensaries.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights says that being listed as a plaintiff in decades-old lawsuits doesn’t mean Earth First can be sued for opposing the Dakota Access oil pipeline.

Pamela Spees is responding to a federal judge who demanded she explain what appear to be discrepancies in the center’s argument that Earth First is an unstructured social movement and can’t be sued by Texas-based pipeline developer Energy Transfer Partners.

Judge Billy Roy Wilson pointed out that Earth First was a listed plaintiff in three lawsuits in the 1980s and 1990s, and said “If Earth First can sue, it seems to me that it is subject to being sued.”

Spees says that just because Earth First was listed as a plaintiff doesn’t mean it actually had that legal right.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A longtime Fargo firefighter has been named North Dakota’s new fire marshal.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem announced Tuesday he appointed Douglas Nelson. He replaces Jeff Huber, who resigned last April.

The fire marshal office is a division overseen by the attorney general. The division handles arson investigations and is responsible for fire safety inspections of schools, day care facilities, restaurants and public buildings.

The attorney general says Nelson has been a firefighter since 2002, and has most recently served as a fire inspector and investigator with the Fargo Fire Department.

Nelson was recommended by a committee made up of representatives from law enforcement agencies and fire departments.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is scheduled to give a keynote address at the North Dakota Republican Party’s endorsing convention this weekend.

The convention in Grand Forks begins Friday and ends Sunday. GOP Chairman Rick Berg says Zinke will speak Saturday.

Democrats held their convention last month in Grand Forks. Former Vice President Joe Biden gave the keynote, and appeared on behalf of Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, as she seeks re-election to a second six-year term against GOP Rep. Kevin Cramer.
