The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) along with the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) have issued a Travel Alert for portions of southeastern North Dakota due blowing snow sticking to the roads creating slippery driving conditions into this morning.
Cities included in the Travel Alert are Valley City, Jamestown, Edgeley, Ellendale, and surrounding areas. . A Travel Alert means conditions are such that motorists can still travel in these areas, but should be advised of rapidly changing conditions. Motorists are encouraged to reduce speeds and drive according to the conditions.
ELLENDALE, N.D. (AP) — A LaMoure woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash on any icy U.S. Highway 281 in southeastern North Dakota’s Dickey County. The Highway Patrol says 21-year-old Taylor Bliss was driving a sport utility vehicle that slid out of control about 5:30 p.m. Sunday and into the path of an oncoming pickup truck.
The vehicles collided about 2 miles north of Ellendale. Bliss was declared dead at the scene.
The pickup driver was taken to a hospital in Aberdeen, South Dakota, with injuries the patrol says are not life-threatening.
Jamestown (CSi) The James River Humane Society over the past year had 148 dog adoptions and 124 cat adoptions.
On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, the shelter’s Dog Manager, Kris Meidinger said, presently there are 15 dogs available for adoption, the maximum, adding that the Humane Society currently has eights cats available.
She says when accepting dogs, the priority is, first taking in dogs from the city pound, followed by owner surrendered dogs, then dogs from area pounds, and then area surrenders.
She pointed out that the James River Humane Society has taken in a number of displaced dogs from Texas stemming from last summer’s hurricane.
When the animals are taken in they are tested for disease, and then given immunization, and either spayed or neutered.
When accepting dogs surrendered by owners, their immunization records are checked to make sure they are updated.
Kris pointed out that the James River Humane Society has testing available to see if potential adopted animals will get along with dogs or cats already in a home, along with children.
If there’s a good match the adoption will go through, pending passing other criteria. If not, another dog or cat may be a good match following testing, that’s conducted at the shelter.
She added that adoption forms are available on their web site: JamesRiverHumaneSocity.org, or at the shelter, located off the I-94 Bloom Exit.
Call 701-252-0747 for more information including volunteer opportunities and socializing with the animals.
The shelter is open everyday 9-a.m. to 11:30-a.m., and 5:30-p.m., to 6:30-p.m., or visit by appointment.
Also on our show James River Humane Society, board member Jay Nitchke said at the recent annual board meeting a new president was elected.
Jamestown (SEN Heitkamp’s Office) U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp, a member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, Friday hosted a discussion to highlight successful women-owned small businesses in Jamestown and discuss collaborative strategies to encourage and support women entrepreneurs.
During the discussion, Heitkamp heard from successful women small business owners in the area about how they started, maintain, and expand their businesses. They also talked about how the federal government and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) can help women business owners overcome unique challenges.
According to the 2017 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, North Dakota continues to rank as one of the top states in the Union for women starting and growing their business. North Dakota now has over 20,000 women-owned businesses and ranks number one in terms of employment vitality which is the employment growth rate of women-owned businesses and the average number of employees working at women-owned businesses. Further, North Dakota ranks fourth in the nation in terms of the number of new women owned businesses as well as their growth in employment and revenues.
“North Dakota continues to show that women business owners are paving the way and helping propel our state forward,” said Heitkamp. “We need to make sure these women and future women who want to start small businesses have the tools they need to thrive, and that’s why we’re here today. We talked about how the federal government can better help small businesses get off the ground, whether that is from common-sense regulations, start-up funding, or simply providing the certainty needed to make long-term decisions. Through my work on the Senate Small Business Committee, I’ll keep working to make sure their needs are heard and addressed so they have the right economic tools needed to thrive.”
Heitkamp also discussed her work in the U.S. Senate to support rural entrepreneurs through her Startup Entrepreneur Empowerment Delivery (SEED) Act. The SEED Act would expand access to early stage funding for startups in rural states and small cities – which many startups say is their biggest challenge. In addition to helping women-owned businesses financially, Heitkamp also reinforced the need for family-friendly policies like the FAMILY Act that would give working families and entrepreneurs flexibility by creating a federal paid family and medical leave policy.
In March 2017, Heitkamp reintroduced the bipartisan Supporting America’s Innovators Act with U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) to help encourage investments in small businesses and startups in smaller communities. In the Fargo-Moorhead region, about a third of startups identified accessing early stage funding as the greatest hurdle to growing their business. Heitkamp introduced her SEED Act in 2016 to tackle that problem by investing in promising startups in ten small cities in rural states. In addition, Heitkamp brought then-U.S. Small Business Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet to North Dakota in July 2015 to meet with North Dakota successful women-owned small businesses, and to hold the first U.S. Senate Committee on Small Businesses field hearing in Fargo on how to better support startups in rural areas.
In 2014, Heitkamp recommended Kari Warberg Block for a position on the National Women’s Business Council (NWBC) that she served on for three years. The NWBC is a federal Council comprised of 15 women from around the country that advise the President, Congress, and the SBA on economic issues and concerns relevant to women business owners nationwide. Warberg Block was also honored as North Dakota’s 2013 Small Business Owner of the Year. Last August, Heitkamp joined Warberg Block in a women’s small business roundtable in Bismarck to discuss methods and policies that would support women entrepreneurs grow their businesses.

HEBRON, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a semi-tractor collided with a state Transportation Department snowplow on Interstate 94 near Hebron.
Authorities say both vehicles were eastbound on I-94 when the crash happened Sunday morning. The plow was in the left lane traveling 15 mph when the semi driver came up from behind and lost sight of the plow because of snow fog.
The semi driver moved into the left lane to pass when he noticed the plow also was in that lane, so he tried to pass on the median shoulder. The semi struck the left rear of the plow and came to rest in the median.
Everyone was wearing seat belts and no one was hurt. The patrol says the semi driver was cited for careless driving.
Gardner (CSi) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a Minnesota man was arrested following a wrong-way DUI crash early Saturday in Cass County
The crash occurred at 12:30 a.m. when a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited was southbound in the northbound lane of Interstate 29 near Gardner. A northbound Freightliner truck veered in an attempt to avoid the Jeep, but was struck on the right side of the truck and semi-trailer.
The Freightliner slowed and stopped on the northbound shoulder of the roadway. The Jeep came to rest, obstructing the northbound driving lane.
The Jeep driver, 20 year old Jared Markeson, Woodbury, Minnesota, was wearing a seat belt and an airbag deployed. The Freightliner driver, 27 year old Jasbir Dhillon, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was wearing a seat belt.
No injuries were reported in the crash that remains under investigation by the patrol.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A nonprofit has started efforts to bring a transitional living facility to the city of Minot to serve people with disabilities or other difficulties.
The Minot Planning Commission recently approved a conditional use permit for the request of Power of the Purse, Inc.
The Minot Daily News reports that permit is for a house in the southwest part of the city. The house would have five bedrooms and accommodate up to 16 people and would be staffed with a live-in manager.
The home’s residents also would be required to pay rent and attend school or work.
Kristen Boen of Power of the Purse says the group home would fill a significant need in the community without having to draw on government funds.
Mayor Chuck Barney sad a transitional living facility could play an important role in the city’s efforts to combat the opioid crisis by providing people in recovery with a place to transition.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer is being greeted by throngs of GOP delegates at the state endorsing convention in Grand Forks, with smiles, handshakes, and well-wishes.
Cramer is considered Republicans’ best hope of unseating incumbent Democrat Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.
But his party hasn’t always been happy with him.
Cramer bypassed the party’s convention in 2012 and challenged the endorsed U.S. House candidate in the primary. The move irked party bosses.
Now he has almost universal support of the party because his race against Heitkamp is expected to be one of the toughest Senate races in the U.S., with the GOP’s 51-49 majority in question.
Cramer says, “North Dakotans have a role in shaping the agenda for the country.” But he says support must continue until Election Day.
GRAND FORKS (AP) The more than 1,600 party faithful on Saturday endorsed state Sen. Kelly Armstrong of Dickinson for U.S. House, though Grafton state Sen. Tom Campbell and former U.S. Marine Tiffany Abentroth have signaled they will continue on to the primary, even though they did not get their party’s endorsement for the seat being vacated by Rep. Kevin Cramer, who is looking to unseat Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.
A convention endorsement only guarantees a candidate a spot on the June 12 primary ballot and party support against any challengers.
Any candidate may file petitions to run in the primary, although such challenges are rare. The most recent exception was in 2014 when former Microsoft executive Doug Burgum defeated North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem in the Republican primary for governor, after party faithful endorsed Stenehjem as their preferred candidate.
Campbell, a wealthy potato farmer, has dug deep into his own pocket for the past several months to buy TV ads to raise his profile statewide. About three-quarters of the more than $1 million he has raised has come from himself, Federal Election Commission filings show.
Campbell drew negative headlines last month with the revelation that he was paying convention registration fees for some delegates. The move is permitted by party rules, but some Republicans — including Armstrong and Abentroth — said it could be seen as vote buying in an endorsement battle. Though Armstrong had covered registrations for a handful of family members, Campbell had covered more than 60 people, most of whom reimbursed the party for fear their names would be disclosed.
Any candidate could file petitions to run in the primary. The candidate must win the primary to run in the November general election.
Delegates endorsed Cramer on Saturday. The Senate race has big stakes for the state and the nation, as Republicans seek to cling to a narrow majority in the chamber.
Incumbent Attorney General Stenehjem, Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger, Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring and Public Service Commissioners Randy Christmann and Brian Kroshus are unopposed for the endorsement of Republican delegates.
A Mandan businessman has won the GOP’s endorsement for secretary of state over the longest-serving Republican official in the North Dakota Capitol. Republican delegates at the GOP convention in Grand Forks on Saturday endorsed Will Gardner over Al Jaeger. Jaeger has served more than two decades in the office that is best known for supervising elections. The former Fargo real estate salesman was first elected in 1992.
North Dakota Democrats held their convention last month in Grand Forks, endorsing Mac Schneider for Congress, state Rep. Joshua Boschee for secretary of state, state Sen. Jim Dotzenrod for agriculture commissioner, David Thompson for attorney general, Kylie Oversen for tax commissioner, and Casey Buchmann and Jean Brandt for public service commissioners.

Master’s
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Patrick Reed was able to conquer a pair of outstanding competitors before donning a green jacket early Sunday evening.
The 27-year-old Texan and Augusta University product closed with a 1-under 71 to win his first Major championship, holding off Rickie Fowler by one stroke at the Masters. Reed pulled ahead of Jordan Spieth (speeth) with an 8-foot birdie on the 14th hole. He stayed in front with a par-saving putt on 17 and closed out the tournament with a two-putt for par for a 15-under total.
Reed entered the final round with a three-shot lead before losing it while Spieth and Fowler made charges.
Spieth began the day nine shots behind before turning in an 8-under 64 in one of the greatest final rounds in Masters history. But a disappointing bogey at the last hole gave Reed just enough of a cushion.
Fowler made quite a run at his first major title, making six birdies over the final 11 holes for a closing 67.
NBA
UNDATED (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers have clinched home-court advantage for the first round of the NBA playoffs by posting their first 50-win season since the 2001-01 squad lost to the Lakers in the Finals.
J.J. Redick scored 18 points and the Sixers earned their team record-tying 14th consecutive victory by topping the Mavericks, 109-97. Ben Simmons added 16 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, while Robert Covington had 15 points and 10 boards.
The 50-win plateau puts another stamp on a tremendous turnaround for a team that won just 10 games two seasons ago. The only other 76ers squad to win 14 straight in a season was the 1983 championship team of Julius Erving, Moses Malone and Maurice Cheeks.
The Sixers have managed to stretch the win streak without Joel Embiid (joh-EHL’ ehm-BEED’), who is out until at least the start of the playoffs because of an orbital fracture in his left eye.
Philadelphia owns a one-game lead over the Cavaliers for third place in the East.

Boston coach Brad Stevens rested his regulars the entire fourth quarter.

NHL-PANTHERS/BRUINS
BOSTON (AP) — The Florida Panthers played spoilers just a day after being eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoff picture.
The Boston Bruins have to settle for a second-place finish in the Atlantic Division following a 4-2 loss to the Panthers. The outcome gives the Tampa Bay Lightning the division crown and the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Frank Vatrano put Florida ahead to stay late in the first period, snapping a 1-1 deadlock. Vatrano also set up Henrik Borgstrom’s goal 82 seconds into the game.
James Reimer and Roberto Luongo combined to stop 41 shots for the Panthers, who ended up one point behind the Devils for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth despite a season-ending, five-game winning streak.
David Backes (BAK’-ehs) and David Pastrnak did the scoring for the Bruins, who needed a victory to overtake the Lightning.
The Bruins will open the playoffs against the Maple Leafs in Boston later this week.
MLB-SCHEDULE
UNDATED (AP) — Shohei Ohtani demonstrated he can do a little pitching when he’s not hitting home runs.
Ohtani retired the Athletics’ first 19 hitters and allowed just one hit over seven innings to pitch the Angels to a 6-1 victory. He struck out 12 and kept Oakland off the bases until Marcus Semien singled in the seventh.
Ohtani struck out the side twice during the latest feat in a series of early-season superlatives by the 23-year-old Japanese prodigy. He currently has a three-game home run streak and is hitting .389 with seven RBIs in 18 at-bats.
Mike Trout and Ryan Schimpf homered, and Albert Pujols (POO’-hohlz) had an RBI double in the Angels’ seventh win in nine games.
Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox earned their eighth straight win by scoring six times in the eighth inning of an 8-7 comeback over the Rays. Tampa Bay led 7-2 until Rafael Devers hit a two-run double and scored on a single by Christian Vasquez. Mookie Betts followed with a run-scoring single and Andrew Benintendi capped the rally with an RBI double.
The rally allowed the Bosox to set a team record for the longest winning streak immediately following a season-opening loss.
Looking at the rest of the major league schedule:
— Craig Gentry provided a tiebreaking, RBI single in the 12th inning before Brad Brach escaped a no-out, bases-loaded jam to preserve the Orioles’ 8-7 win over the Yankees. Anthony Santander hit his first big league homer and Danny Valencia added a two-run shot after New York took a 5-0 lead.
— The Indians earned a 3-1 win over the Royals on a two-run, walk-off homer by Yan Gomes (yahn gohmz) in the bottom of the ninth. The game-time temperature was 32 degrees, the lowest in the 25-year history of Progressive Field.
— Steve Pearce homered on Cole Hamels’ first pitch and Kendrys Morales added a three-run shot in the first inning to jumpstart the Blue Jays’ 7-4 win at Texas. Jaime Garcia got his first win with Toronto, pitching into the sixth inning and leaving after Joey Gallo’s two-run homer made it 7-3.
— Mike Fiers (FY’-urz) combined with four relievers on a three-hitter as the Tigers held off the White Sox, 1-0. Neither team scored after Leonys Martin (lee-OH’-nees mahr-TEEN’) led off the game with a single, stole second and advanced on a passed ball before scoring on Miguel Cabrera’s sacrifice fly.
— Max Stassi crushed a three-run homer and Charlie Morton threw four-hit ball over six innings of the Astros’ 4-1 verdict over the Padres. Josh Reddick also homered as the defending champs improved to 8-2 and dropped San Diego to a major league-worst 2-8.
— The Mets are a National League-best 7-1 after Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EH’-nehs SEHS’-eh-dehs) delivered an RBI single in the 12th inning to send New York to its fifth straight win and a three-game sweep of the Nationals, 6-5. Adrian Gonzalez hit a grand slam for his first homer as a Met, and Asdrubal Cabrera hit a shot to help New York overcome Bryce Harper’s sixth home run of the season.
— Jameson Taillon (TY’-ahn) threw a one-hitter in his first career shutout as the Pirates blanked the Reds, 5-0 to improve to 7-2. Taillon also hit an RBI double and didn’t allow a hit after Tyler Mahle’s third-inning single.
— The Diamondbacks are also 7-2 after David Peralta (peh-RAHL’-tah) and A.J. Pollock belted eighth-inning homers to power Arizona past the Cardinals, 4-1. The game was tied until Peralta slammed a two-run blast to help Yoshihisa Hirano pick up his first major league win.
— The Cubs finally head home after Jose Quintana tossed three-hit ball over six innings of a 3-0 shutout of the Brewers. Ben Zobrist (ZOH’-brihst) hit a solo homer and Albert Almora Jr. doubled home a run to help Chicago finish 5-4 on their season-opening road trip.
— Kyle Farmer’s pinch-hit double scored an ailing Cody Bellinger with the tiebreaking run as the Dodgers beat the Giants in 10 innings. Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw allowed a run and six hits over seven innings. Bellinger made an impact after being held out of the lineup due to food poisoning.
— Nick Markakis (mahr-KAY’-kihs) and Dansby Swanson hit back-to-back homers to support a strong performance by Sean Newcomb as the Braves blanked the Rockies, 4-0. Newcomb allowed three hits in the first inning before retiring the next 16 batters to help Atlanta take two of three in Colorado’s home-opening series.
— Brian Anderson’s tiebreaking, two-run double pushed the Marlins past the Phillies, 6-3. Jake Arrieta (ar-ee-EH’-tuh) lasted just four innings in his Philadelphia debut, allowing two earned runs and three hits, including a solo homer by Miguel Rojas.
— The Mariners and Twins were postponed due to wintry weather, one day after the two teams played the coldest outdoor game in Minnesota history. The game has been rescheduled for May 14.

Reds’ Suarez breaks a thumb
UNDATED (AP) — Reds third baseman Eugenio (ay-oo-HAY’-nee-oh) Suarez broke his right thumb after getting hit by a pitch during Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh.
Suarez winced after a pitch from Jameson Taillon (TY’-ahn) caught him on the right hand leading off the fourth inning. Suarez was tended to by trainers before taking first base, then was replaced in the bottom of the inning by Cliff Pennington.
Suarez entered the game as Cincinnati’s RBI leader.
In other MLB news:
— Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (ZAN’-dur BOH’-gahrtz) left Boston’s game with the Rays in the seventh inning after injuring his left ankle while sliding into the Tampa Bay dugout. Bogaerts was covering third base and was chasing an errant throw by J.D. Martinez that took him toward the dugout.
— Indians right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks after straining his right calf. It’s an injury similar to the one that caused him to miss nearly two months last season.
— The Brewers have placed outfielder Christian Yelich (YEH’-lihch) on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique injury and recalled reliever Taylor Williams from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Yelich went on the DL retroactive to Thursday, a day after he was hurt during a 6-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
