MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Charges are pending against a woman after a near-miss accidental shooting in a Minot apartment building.

Police say the 27-year-old woman was cleaning her gun about 1 a.m. Monday and pulled the trigger, firing a round through the floor and into the apartment below.

Authorities say the bullet struck a dresser near where a man was sitting. He wasn’t hurt.

The woman was arrested on a reckless endangerment charge. Formal charges were pending.

RUGBY, N.D. (AP) — A 51-year-old Towner man is accused of having sex with a female inmate at the jail in Rugby when he was working there as a cook.

Authorities allege Marcelo Lara had consensual sex with the 33-year-old female inmate in the walk-in cooler at the Heart of America Correctional Center.

The woman had been allowed to help prepare jail meals while she was incarcerated, and Lara was her supervisor.

He’s charged with sexual abuse of a ward. The felony carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison.

The Minot Daily News reports Lara made his initial court appearance on March 29 and is due back in court April 23. Court documents do not list an attorney for him.

OXBOW, N.D. (AP) — A Canadian man escaped injury when the semitrailer he was driving caught fire on Interstate 29 in southeastern North Dakota’s Cass County.

The Highway Patrol says the driver was able to stop on the highway shoulder about 8:15 p.m. Sunday and disconnect the trailer from the cab after the trailer’s rear tires caught fire.

The trailer was loaded with produce. The flames engulfed the rear half of the trailer before firefighters from Horace arrived and put them out.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately determined.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Minneapolis law firm says poor policies, training and supervision have plagued a small North Dakota high school where alleged hazing led to charges against five boys.

The report by the Langevin Lentz firm for the Richland 44 School Board details reports from parents of what has come to be called the “rape game” in the community. But it also says there’s confusion about what that actually is.

The term has been described several ways, from finger-poking of the buttocks through clothes to students being restrained and anally penetrated with fingers.

Authorities in mid-February referred five boys to juvenile court for alleged offenses including felonious restraint, terrorizing, hazing and sexual assault.

The law firm found issues with school policies, training and supervision. The school board says they’ll be addressed.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Charities and others are upset with draft rules that would govern the use of electronic pull tabs in North Dakota.

The Legislature last year approved the use of electronic pull tabs and the North Dakota attorney general’s office has crafted rules for their use.

A public hearing on the proposed rules was held Monday at the state Capitol.

Minot Republican Rep. Andy Maragos was the primary sponsor of the bill. But he says the draft rules don’t comply with the legislation’s intent.

The draft rules, among other things, would limit the number of the machines and payouts.

Paper pull tabs account for a majority of the wagers at charitable gambling outlets.

Backers of the electronic pull tabs say they will not replace the paper tickets.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A recent report says job openings are booming in central North Dakota and the Bakken oil patch.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that Job Service North Dakota released its regional report last week. The report found job openings in Divide, McKenzie and Williams counties were at their highest level last month since July 2015.

Cindy Sanford of Williston Job Service North Dakota says the three counties have a significant need for health care professionals and teachers.

She says the oilfield also needs more operators for hydraulic fracturing, pipelines, truck driving and drones. Sanford says they’re looking for people with experience and clean driving records.

She says Bakken-area job openings have steadily increased since fall. Sanford anticipates the trend to continue as construction projects move forward once the weather warms next month.

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A Minnesota man has been sentenced to more than nine years in prison for a carjacking in South Dakota.

The U.S. attorney’s office says 28-year-old Michael Jaime of Dilworth, Minnesota, stole a car at gunpoint at a Sioux Falls truck stop in July 2016.

He later fled from officers in Moorhead, Minnesota, who discontinued the pursuit when speeds reached 140 mph. The car was found abandoned the next day in Dilworth, and Jaime was later arrested.

He pleaded guilty in December and was recently sentenced to nine years and two months in prison. A restitution hearing will be held later.

President of Pure Hockey Skills, Jeff Romddahl says, “I grew up playing on the outdoor rink in McElroy Park in Jamestown and currently have our own backyard pond hockey rink built annually which our youth and adults spend time on having fun, building skills, and creating memories.  We wanted to build an official outdoor rink, right here on the UJ campus to bring our hockey passion back to those roots; it’s going to be a lot of fun for the players and fans of the game.”

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) —  President Donald Trump says he’s going to “make it up” to farmers who would be impacted by China’s proposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. exports.

Trump says: “It’s not nice when they hit the farmers specifically because they think that hits me.”

Trump is promising during a Cabinet meeting that American farmers “will be better off than they ever were” over the last eight years, despite China’s threat to place duties on pork and soybean imports from the U.S.

China is threatening the tariffs in response to Trump moving to enact protectionist measures as punishment for Chinese theft of U.S. intellectual property. The U.S. bought more than $500 billion in goods from China last year and now is planning or considering penalties on some $150 billion of those imports.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has condemned the “heinous” suspected poison gas attack in Syria and said he’ll make a decision on the U.S. response within 24 to 48 hours. Speaking in the White House Cabinet Room Monday, Trump vowed to find out who is responsible for the attack that reportedly killed at least 40 people.NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says as many as 146 million people may have received social media content from a Russian agency that’s accused of trying to meddle in the 2016 presidential election. He says his company found about 470 accounts and pages linked to the St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency, which generated around 80,000 Facebook posts over roughly a two-year period. Zuckerberg says some customers may have received the content from Instagram.NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A topless protester who jumped a barricade and got within a few feet of Bill Cosby has been identified as a New Jersey woman who appeared on several episodes of “The Cosby Show.” Actress Nicolle Rochelle was charged with disorderly conduct for Monday’s protest. She ran in front of Cosby toward a bank of TV cameras as he walked into a suburban Philadelphia courthouse for the start of his sexual assault retrial.HUMBOLDT, Saskatchewan (AP) — Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Justice says one of the deceased in the crash that killed 15 people en route to a hockey playoff game was misidentified. The ministry said Monday the body of Parker Tobin was mistaken for that of Xavier Labelle. It says Labelle is injured but alive, and Tobin is among the deceased.WASHINGTON (AP) — A new analysis says President Donald Trump’s tax cuts and last month’s big spending bill will send the federal deficit toward $1 trillion. The Congressional Budget Office says tax and spending bills will push the deficit to $804 billion this year and nearly $1 trillion for 2019. CBO says economic growth from the tax cuts will add 0.7 percent to economic output over the decade. That only partially offsets the cost of the tax cuts. The administration had promised cuts would pay for themselves.
