Jamestown (WDAY) Authorities have issued a warrant for a Stutsman County resident, accused in an adoption scam.
WDAY reports Betty Jo Krenz of Woodworth has been accused by mothers of staging adoptions, taking money, but never producing a baby.
On Monday felony charges were filed against her.
Perspective moms say she took photos of children that did not belong to her and used them to mislead families ready to adopt.
The families say Krenz used her background as a Spirit Lake social worker to produce fake adoption papers.
In court documents filed Monday states that Krenz told one ‘mom,’ she was heavily involved in the Savanna Greywind case and expected to get custody of Greywind’s child.
It goes so far as to say she tried to stage that baby’s adoption, too.
Krenz told investigators she never gained financially, claiming the families misunderstood.
Krenz said she only put Native American mothers in contact with good families.
Krenz now faces a felony and misdemeanor count of theft, and another felony for using personal information without permission.
The criminal complaint says she took between $1,000 and $10,000 from those families.
If convicted Krenz could get 10 years in prison, plus $20,000 in fines.
