Cleveland  (CSi)  A house explosion Saturday morning at Cleveland, in Stutsman County injured two occupants of the home.

Medina Ambulance and the Cleveland Fire Department responded to 605 3rd Avenue North.

WDAY reports the occupants, reported as a father and son were able to escape the structure.

No immediate word on their injuries.

15 pets were in the home, which received veterinarian  treatment, in Steele.

The  Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office reports, the call came into Stutsman Dispatch Center in Jamestown about 10:20-a.m., indicating the house had exploded.

Fire fighters were on scene, as crews from Otter Tail Power and Montana Dakota Utilities were called to disconnect the utilities, in an effort to bring the subsequent blaze under control , which took three hours to gain access to shut off the gas supply.

Stutsman County Emergency Manager Jerry Bergquist reports the suspected cause was a natural gas buildup in the house, as the investigation continues, by the state fire marshal’s office.

The chimney and roof gutter are all that remains.

Valley City  (CSi)  Valley City officials on April 19th denied a second request to have a petition to put a vote to the people, to stop a street improvement project on Central Avenue and Third Avenue, Southeast.

The first petition request was denied earlier this month, because of language.

A legal complaint issued by Robert Drake said irreparable harm will be done to  downtown Valley City businesses, if the project moves forward.

Southeast District Court Judge, Jay Schmitz dismissed a motion asking for the Temporary Restraining Order, saying the action taken by the City Commission on January 2nd this year to approve the overall project concepts,  was a legislative decision, so there was no legal basis for the court to act on the compliant.

City Attorney Lilie Mertins has indicated an initiated ordinance can not bypass commission action under North Dakota Century code.

At the April 17th, City Commission meeting, commissioners approved going ahead with the street improvement project, at Central Avenue and 3rd Avenue Southeast.

At the commission meeting, the motion was approved for an amendment for the preliminary and design engineering services with KLJ, increased by up to $16,000 on a 3 to 2 vote.

Commissioners Magnuson and Bishop voted against it.

The commission indicated the cost of the Central Avenue Project had gone up from $1.55 million to $1.9 million because of construction engineering estimates.

The North Dakota DOT Urban Grant Program StreeetScape  project was approved on a 4 to one vote, with Mike Bishop voting against it.

Commissioner Ross Powell said at the City Commission meeting that he voted in favor of both projects to get them moving forward.

Bids will be let for both projects on May 11th in Bismarck.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A 21-year-old man was arrested after leading police on a chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph and ended in Fargo.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a trooper tried stopping the Enderlin man for speeding Saturday afternoon on Highway 18 about seven miles south of Casselton. KFGO reports that’s when the SUV sped away and headed east on Interstate 94.

Troopers twice used spike strips to stop the vehicle, but they were unsuccessful.

The 25-mile pursuit ended at Sanford Hospital where the man was arrested on possible charges of reckless driving, drunken driving, fleeing and driving under suspension.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot has assumed the management responsibility of two downtown parking structures after ending its agreement with a developer.

The Minot Daily News reports that the city is currently working create a transition and management plan. City manager Tom Barry says the plan will identify and ensure all administrative, financial, operational and management activities are addressed.

The City Council unanimously approved terminating its Minot’s agreements with Cypress Development LLC in March.

The city and Cypress entered into lease agreements in 2015 for the Central and Renaissance parking structures. Minot had been working to negotiate with Cypress for nine months before deciding to end the agreement.

Minot is allowing local residents to park in the structures for free over the next month during its management transition period.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A $1.8 million project is underway to replace the four main elevators at the North Dakota Capitol.

Facilities Manager John Boyle says the old elevators are original to the Capitol, which is one of the state’s tallest buildings at 242 feet.

Boyle says the project’s cost will be made up over the next 15 years from lower maintenance and operating costs.

All elevator cars, motors, pulleys and cables are being replaced by Otis Elevator Co. The elevators travel 20 floors, including the basement.

Boyle says only the brass elevator doors on the Capitol’s ground and first floors are being reused.

The Capitol was completed in 1934, after the original statehouse burned in 1930. Cuts were made so that the building would stay within its $2 million budget in Depression-era dollars.

UNDERWOOD, N.D. (AP) — Great River Energy is studying whether it could profitably power a greenhouse near its Coal Creek Station coal-fired power plant.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that potential plant would use excess heat from the plant that produces electricity and also supplies waste steam to a nearby ethanol plant.

The GRE, North American Coal, California-based Houweling’s Group and Knorr Farms began researching a greenhouse as a potential user of excess heat from the Underwood power plant more than a year ago.

They’re two-part feasibility study is nearing completion. The study aims to find if the project is to find if the project is economically viable. It would take a couple of years before anything is built.

Plans for the project would be based on a Houweling’s greenhouse in Mona, Utah.

NEW YORK (AP) — Hillary Clinton isn’t on the ballot, but she’s starring as the central villain in the Republicans’ midterm strategy for 2018.

They’re spending big on ads linking her to vulnerable Democrats as the GOP hopes to retain its fragile majority in Congress.

Republicans already have featured Clinton in attacks against Democratic candidates in Pennsylvania, Indiana and North Dakota.

One activist calls Clinton “a very powerful motivator.”

Critics suggest the strategy smacks of desperation, if not sexism. But with no Democrat to attack in the White House for the first time in nearly a decade, Republicans are betting big that the ghost of Clinton will serve them well in 2018. Saddled with President Donald Trump’s poor approval ratings, they may have little choice.

(VCSUVikings.com)- Three more Vikings qualified for nationals and two more school records fell this weekend as the VCSU track and field team competed at a pair of meets on Friday.

Kyle Odegard and Garret Roemmich punched their tickets to the NAIA National Championships with qualifying throws in men’s javelin, while Megan Johnson qualified for nationals and set a new school record in the women’s long jump. A second school record also fell as Sayge McKrill recorded the top women’s discus throw in school history.

The majority of the VCSU team competed at the Northern State Twilight Meet in Aberdeen, S.D., while Johnson and the rest of the VCSU jumpers competed at the Blue Hawk Games in Dickinson. Valley City State athletes combined to win four events at the two meets.

A few VCSU runners also competed Saturday at the Earth Day Run Half Marathon in St. Cloud, Minn., which included a third-place finish by Louis Leon.

“While this was a historic weekend for several of our student-athletes, we are confident that the coming weeks will bring continued improvement performance-wise and weather-wise,” said VCSU head coach Chris Johnson. “I am proud of all the student-athletes who have been putting in the work on the track despite less than ideal conditions. That determination and focus will pay off in the end.”

Up next: Valley City State is scheduled to compete April 28 at the Ron Masanz Classic in Moorhead, Minn.

Northern State Twilight Meet – Aberdeen, S.D.

VCSU freshman Kyle Odegard recorded the second-farthest javelin throw in school history as he won the meet title and met the NAIA “A” national qualifying standard. Odegard’s mark of 59.73 meters (195 feet, 11 inches) ranks him 7th in the NAIA so far this season.

In VCSU history, Odegard’s throw trails only school record holder Darin Spenst’s top mark of 59.98 meters (196-9) back in 1989.

VCSU went 1-2 in the men’s javelin as Garret Roemmich placed second with a national qualifying mark of 55.30 meters (181-5). Roemmich’s throw meets the “B” standard for nationals and ranks him 15th in the nation.

In the women’s javelin, VCSU freshman Peyton Halverson took home a meet title. Halverson recorded a top throw of 36.99 meters (121-4), topping second place by more than a meter.

The VCSU men’s 4×100 relay team also won their event at the meet. The team of Joel DelaCruz, Lenzel Koskela, Konnor Stueve and Jacob Furlott finished the race in a time of 43.48 seconds, beating teams from Northern State University and MSU-Moorhead.

In women’s discus, Sayge McKrill set a new school record as she tied for second place amongst a competitive field. McKrill’s mark of 41.39 meters (135-9) breaks the previous school record of 41.01 meters (134-8) set by Scheryl Kottsick in 2001. McKrill’s mark highlighted a strong team-wide performance in the women’s discus. Amongst 15 throwers, Valley City State’s women placed 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th.
