Jamestown (CSi) – It is with sadness that we report the passing of Charlie Kourajian,  Saturday May 19, 2018, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo.

Charlie a longtime friend to all and a supporter of “everything Jamestown”, was a frequent visitor to the CSi TV Studios as a Councilman, Mayor, and friend.

  • Vigil service  7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Basilica in Jamestown.
  • A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 am Weds May 23 at St. James Basilica.
  • Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Jamestown.
  • Per request of the family, the funeral will be recorded to replay on CSi TV 10 – The Replay Channel starting at 2pm Weds May 23

The notice of his passing was shared on Facebook Saturday morning by his son Steven.

My dad had to have emergency surgery on Tuesday and couldn’t breathe on his own after that. Things were complicated by pneumonia and fluid and air in the abdominal cavity, congestive heart failure and deceased kidney output. He couldn’t speak with a breathing tube so he wrote us quite a few notes. He was doing very well but things took a turn on Thursday for the worse. He was air ambulanced to Fargo and had a significant stroke during or after arriving at Sanford. Dad rallied for a while, recognized family and relatives yesterday afternoon and then went into slow decline while I was his “male nurse” during the night. Charlie went to be with the Lord this morning and joins many family and friends including his beloved Marcy. You couldn’t have found a better role model to follow and there wasn’t a person anywhere who poured more into his community. Farewell Dad and “ Mr. Jamestown” we loved you and will miss you greatly.”    Steven Kourajian

Kourajian was first elected to the Jamestown City Council in 1974. He was elected mayor in 1996 and served until losing re-election in 2006. He was elected again to the City Council in 2008 and 2012.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota politician accused in a peeping incident at a college campus announced Sunday he is dropping out of the race for secretary of state.

Will Gardner’s withdrawal from the race came two days after the Fargo Forum reported on the 2006 incident in which he was accused of peeping through a window at a North Dakota State University women’s dormitory.

“In light of recent events, I have decided to withdraw from the election of secretary of state. This is the best decision for my family and me,” Gardner said on his Twitter and Facebook accounts. The 41-year-old Mandan businessman did not immediately return voice or text messages from The Associated Press on Sunday.

Court records show Gardner pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in February 2006 and was given a 30-day suspended jail sentence and fined $225. The Forum reported the charge stemmed from an incident a month earlier in which Gardner, who was 29 at the time, was arrested for allegedly peeping in a women’s dorm while working as a webmaster at the university’s libraries.

The newspaper reported that responding officers said Gardner’s pants were unzipped and the front of his shirt was pulled out.

Gardner won the GOP’s endorsement for secretary of state in April over incumbent Al Jaeger, who was the longest-serving Republican official in the North Dakota Capitol.

The 74-year-old Jaeger, a former Fargo real estate salesman, has served more than two decades in the office that is best known for supervising elections. Jaeger was first elected in 1992.

Jaeger told the AP that Gardner called him Sunday “to say he was withdrawing from the race in the interest of his family.” Gardner has seven children.

Jaeger said he is still interested in contesting the seat. “Obviously, I had interest in the past and now we have a new development,” he said.

He said he would meet with GOP Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem on Monday “to find out what are the options going forward.”

Gardner’s name will still appear on the June 12 primary ballot. Fargo state Rep. Josh Boschee is the endorsed Democrat for the seat and will also appear on the ballot.

State Republican Party Chairman Rick Berg did not return phone calls on Sunday.

Any candidate may run in either party’s primary by collecting petition signatures from at least 300 North Dakota voters. Jaeger elected not to do that and has missed the deadline for doing so.

Jaeger agreed that his options under state law include running as a write-in candidate in June, or as an independent candidate in November if he collects 1,000 petition signatures leading up to that election.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Williston police say officers rescued a man trapped in a burning home.

KFYR-TV reports the blaze was reported at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Police say officers rescued the man who was in the back of the burning home.

Police say two people and two officers were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Police say one of the residents was transferred to a burn unit.

Police say a cat also was rescued and taken to a shelter.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Authorities say the home is likely a total loss.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck man has been convicted of felony arson in connection with a fire last November that heavily damaged his fiancee’s home.

The Bismarck Tribune reports Spencer Norton was found guilty on Friday following a two-day trial.

Norton also faces a new charge filed Thursday of felony terrorizing for threatening comments he allegedly made while being held at the Burleigh-Morton County Detention Center.

Court documents say Norton threatened to harm police officers who were involved in the arson investigation.

Norton also was charged with felony terrorizing in January for making similar threats at the jail. A trial is set for late July for the first terrorizing case.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota grant money will offer relief to ratepayers as a $5.6 million project moves forward to upgrade a city’s water system.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that the city of Mandan will use the $3.1 million North Dakota State Water Commission grant to fund part of a 30-inch water transmission line replacement. The commission also extended an existing grant to plan a new water intake.

State Engineer Garland Erbele says the commission approved both projects for funding because of Mandan’s recent population growth and the potential impacts to the water system from ongoing intake complications.

The state grant also prevents the city from having to pass the total cost of the project on to ratepayers.

The new line will replace more than 9,000 feet of old pipe connecting the water treatment plant and a reservoir on Old Red Trail.

NEW YORK (AP) — He is the Republican Party’s most powerful political weapon. Yet as the GOP fights to defend its delicate House and Senate majorities, President Donald Trump is not welcome everywhere.

Some Republican candidates fear that the unscripted and relatively unpopular president could do more harm than good should he campaign on their behalf.

The current White House strategy calls for Trump to focus on fundraising and campaigning in states key to control of the Senate, including Indiana, Montana, Tennessee, North Dakota, Missouri, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

That’s according to a person familiar with the president’s strategy who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal planning.

Closer to Election Day, Trump is expected to shift his focus to rallies designed to bolster get-out-the-vote efforts.
