Scattered early morning thunderstorms could produce small hail and
gusty winds across western and central North Dakota. An isolated
severe storm is possible early this morning.
A significant severe weather event is expected this afternoon and
evening. Scattered severe storms will likely first develop across
western North Dakota between 2 pm and 4 pm CDT and are forecast to
merge into a solid line of storms by the time they reach Highway
83 in the late afternoon or early evening. The line of storms will
then move eastward across the remainder of central North Dakota
and the James River valley this evening. The storms could produce
very large hail, possibly up to the size of tennis balls, damaging
wind gusts up to 70 mph, and very heavy rainfall. A few tornadoes
are also possible this afternoon, with the greatest tornado risk
in areas along and west of Highway 83.
Strong northwest winds gusting up to 45 mph are likely across

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Bus Stop Inc. has announced that as of Thursday, May 31st, the Bus Depot in Jamestown has closed.
On Thursday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Jamestown Bus Stop Inc., board member Alden Kollman said, due to the early morning hours of the Jefferson Bus Lines, schedule, it made it extremely difficult for the bus depot’s volunteers to staff the depot.
He said anticipated revenue from ticket sales factored in to the Jamestown bus stop closure, with a 10 percent commission based on an expected $80,000 in annual ticket sales which would generate enough dollars for overhead and paid volunteers.
Kollman added that annual ticket sales have been between $40,000 and $50,000, for the Jamestown Bus Depot, with Jefferson paying a staff between April and June, but would not sustain the depot’s operations.
There is no commission for tickets purchased online.
Kollman pointed out that on May 24th the Jefferson Lines westbound bus began arriving in Jamestown at 12:20 a.m., followed by the eastbound bus at 3:40 a.m.
When the bus depot opened two years ago the schedule was the eastbound bus arriving at 10:10 a.m., and the westbound bus at 2 p.m., making it easier for volunteers to staff the depot.
The former bus depot was opened in 2016 a year after the late Charlie Kourajian, having concerns about bus riders waiting outside in the elements, especially in the winter, began a search of a building and working with officials at First Congregational United Church of Christ, in Downtown Jamestown secured the church’s garage which was converted to the bus depot, including a ticket agent along with a waiting area, and restroom facility, with monthly rent paid to the church.
Seed money for the project was secured through the City of Jamestown, with the help of Kourajian, who was then a city council member, and local business donations.
Kollman said along with Charlie, Alden and his wife Landa, along with Steve Grenz, and Carol Henne, and Doreen Brophy, volunteered to staff the bus depot on a regular basis, needing to be there 90 minutes before and after each bus arrival along with being there afternoons to sell tickets to walk-in customers. Monthly ridership averaged about 100 individuals per month.
Kollman said now, bus passengers will again have to wait for the bus in the three-side structure on First Avenue North and First Street West, near the railroad tracks. He said hopefully those people will have the availability to wait for the bus in a car if they can get a ride.
He added, anyone that has a business open 24 hours and wishing to accommodate the bus riders, indoors, may contact Alden Kollman at 701-320-7650, and he’ll contact officials with Jefferson Bus Line, specifically, Jefferson Lines Director of Sales, Kevin Pursey
The location will not have to sell tickets, as those can be purchased at the Jefferson Bus Line website.
Kollman said dollars left in the depot’s coffers after sewer line issues are addressed, will be donated to the Jamestown Salvation Army which provides travel vouchers to those traveling from Jamestown without funds.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) — The National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown has welcomed a special addition to its herd.
Museum Director Ilana Xinos (il-AH’nah ZEE’-nohs) says a white female cow was born at Shirek Buffalo Ranch in Michigan, North Dakota. She’s a descendant of White Cloud, who lived with the herd at the National Buffalo Museum for 20 years.
Native Americans consider the white buffalo to be sacred. Xinos says the birth will allow the museum to contribute to current research in bison genetics since there’s still much to learn about the connection of albinism and bison.
White Cloud originally returned home to Shirek Buffalo Ranch in May 2016 where she died. In her lifetime at the National Buffalo Museum, she had 11 bison calves including another white buffalo, Dakota Miracle, who is also in the Jamestown herd.

NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. (AP) — The superintendent of a North Dakota school district who is among the finalists for a position on the state Board of Higher Education has survived an effort to oust her from her job.
KVLY-TV reports that New Rockford-Sheyenne School Board president John McKnight had recommended that Jill Louters be fired for staying in the same hotel room with her son and elementary school boys during an archery tournament in March.
McKnight says Louters did not get permission from all the families to chaperone the boys, and some parents called her conduct unprofessional and unethical.
The vote to dismiss Louters failed by a 4-2 vote, after which McKnight resigned from the board.
Louters says the vote reflects that she did not violate any policies and no sanctions were warranted.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A New Mexico man who took part in the Dakota Access oil pipeline protests in North Dakota has been sentenced to serve three years in federal prison.
Authorities say 45-year-old Michael Giron was part of a group that put barricades on a state highway south of Mandan, North Dakota, and set them on fire, then clashed with law officers. The incident happened Oct. 27, 2016.
Giron, who also goes by the name Little Feather, pleaded guilty to civil disorder in February in a plea agreement with prosecutors, who dismissed a more serious charge. He is the first of seven protesters charged with federal crimes to be sentenced.
He received credit for a little more than a year he’s already served behind bars.
(AP) Police say a pedestrian struck by a pickup in Grand Forks has died of his injuries.
Authorities say 42-year-old Jason Lee Longie was hit shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday in a pedestrian crosswalk. The driver of the pickup that struck him flagged down an officer for help. Police say the driver had a green light at the intersection where Longie was hit.
The victim was taken to Altru Hospital where he later died.
BELFIELD, N.D. (AP) — A proposal to expand U.S. Highway 85 in western North Dakota is getting mixed reviews.
The Bismarck Tribune reports the state Transportation Department is holding public hearings this week on the plan to expand the highway from two to four lanes between Watford City and Interstate 94.
Some people say the expansion is needed to improve safety, but others are worried about how it would impact Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
Officials say it’s still not known how the estimated $479 million project would be paid for or when construction would start.
State officials anticipate issuing a final decision and environmental impact statement on the project this fall. The Federal Highway Administration will ultimately decide whether the project is built.

— The Indians coughed up an 8-0 lead before Francisco Lindor’s (lihn-DOHRZ’) solo homer in the eighth inning gave Cleveland a 9-8 victory at Minnesota. Lindor also hit a three-run shot and Jose Ramirez added a solo blast in the fourth inning while Cleveland surged ahead by eight runs. Homers by Logan Morrison, Eduardo Escobar and Miguel Sano (sah-NOH’) helped the Twins tie the game before the Indians won their sixth in a row to maintain their 4 ½-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central.
— The Atlanta Braves are back atop the NL East standings following a win over the previous No. 1 team.
Sean Newcomb won his sixth straight decision and the Braves ended the Nationals’ six-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory in Atlanta. He allowed a pair of runs over seven innings and retired 14 of his final 15 hitters before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter.
Newcomb hasn’t lost since getting roughed up by the Nats in his season debut on April 2.
Ozzie Albies was 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a run scored as the Braves moved a half-game ahead of Washington.
Meanwhile, the Astros stayed atop the AL West with a 4-2 win over the Red Sox. Tony Kemp singled home the tiebreaking run in the fourth before Jake Marisnick collected an RBI with a squeeze bunt later in the inning.
Carlos Correa hit a two-run homer and Lance McCullers Jr. allowed four hits in six innings, including Xander Bogaerts’ (BOH’-gahrts) two-run double in the third.
Boston ended a three-game winning streak and saw its lead in the AL East slip to 1 ½ games over the New York Yankees.
Also in the majors:
— Houston still owns a one-game lead in the AL West after Nelson Cruz launched a two-run homer to spark the Mariners’ 6-1 win over the Rangers. Wade LeBlanc continued to pitch well while starting in place of the injured Erasmo Ramirez, holding Texas to a run and four hits in five innings. Dee Gordon tripled and scored in his first at-bat since a fractured toe put him on the 10-day disabled list.
— Ben Zobrist (ZOH’-brihst) snapped a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the fifth inning as the Cubs downed the Mets, 5-1. Jose Quintana held New York to three hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings to help Chicago pull within four games of the NL Central-leading Brewers. Brandon Nimmo hit an eighth-inning homer for the Mets, and Seth Lugo came out of the bullpen to throw four innings of three-hit ball as a starter before Hansel Robles served up the go-ahead homer.
— The wildest finish of the day was in St. Louis as the Cardinals scored five times in the bottom of the ninth to stun the Pirates, 10-8. Yairo Munoz ended it with a three-run homer off Felipe Vazquez after recently-recalled pinch-hitter Luke Voit lined a two-run single. Munoz drove in five runs for the Redbirds, who overcame Francisco Cervelli’s three-run shot and Josh Bell’s two-run homer.
— Jorge Alfaro hit an RBI single and a tiebreaking double as the Phillies downed the Dodgers, 2-1 to get within one game of the NL East lead. Alfaro’s seventh-inning double made a winner out of Aaron Nola, who limited Los Angeles to a run and just two hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. NHL-CAPITALS-KUZNETSOV
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz had no update Thursday on injured center Evgeny Kuznetsov (kooz-NET’-sahv) or his status for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final against the Golden Knights.
Kuznetsov missed the last two periods of Wednesday night’s 3-2 win at Vegas after taking a hit from defenseman Brayden McNabb. The Capitals are calling it an upper-body injury, but he was clutching his left arm as he headed to the dressing room.
Kuznetsov tops the Caps with 25 points on 11 goals and 14 assists in 21 games.
TENNIS-FRENCH OPEN
Serena Williams has advanced to the third round at the French Open by overcoming some early difficulties to beat 17th-seeded Ashleigh Barty of Australia 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Williams made 12 unforced errors in the first set and trailed by a set and a break before recalibrating her shots and taking control in the second. The 36-year-old American is playing in her first Grand Slam tournament in 16 months — and first since giving birth to a daughter about nine months ago.
Williams’ next opponent will be 11th-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany, who reached the third round for the fourth time with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Alison Van Uytvanck in the final match on Thursday’s program.
Also Thursday, Rafael Nadal completed another straight-set win to reach the third round, easily dispatching Guido Pella of Argentina 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. Nadal hasn’t lost a set at the French Open since 2015, when he was beaten in the quarterfinals by Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich).

Bills release Wood
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills have released veteran center Eric Wood in what is considered a formality after the player was diagnosed with a career-ending neck injury in January.
The decision allows the Bills to limit the effect the player’s remaining bonus money will have on their salary cap. The money owed will now only count against the team’s salary cap this year rather than be spread over the two years left on Wood’s contract.
