Tuesday evening’s storm totals were .27 of an inch of rain at the Jamestown Weather Station, .35 of an inch on the CSi Weather Computer in Downtown Jamestown at Historic Franklin School.  The weather station reported a peak wind gust of 71 mph.

During the storm Valley City reported a power outage, and a brief power interruption  in parts of Jamestown stemming from downed lines.

The high wind caused tree damages as well.

Next possible severe weather is in  south central ND late Thursday night.

Another system follows for Friday with more showers and thunderstorms, some possibly severe.

Fire damage was confined to the interior and roof.

Lt. Sheldon Mohr says unattended grilling was the cause of the fire.

No injuries and no other structure damage.

The fire department with  23 fire fighters  was on the scene about a half hour.

Valley City (CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, a 64 year old Sanborn man has died as a result of driving off the road Monday Morning about 8:25-a.m., and into Hobart Lake, three miles east of Sanborn.

The report says Terry Swenson of Sanborn was operating his 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck, westbound on Barnes County Road 22, and for an unknow reason the pickup drove off the right side of the road and into Hobart Lake, where it submerged.

The Valley City Dive Team rescued him from the submerged vehicle, and he was transported by Valley City Ambulance, to CHI Mercy Hospital in Valley City.

Swenson died Tuesday morning as a result of the crash, which remain under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were:  The Sanborn Fire Department, Valley City Fire Department and Dive Team, and Barnes County Sheriff’s Office.

Approved the roof repair for standpipe mixer expenditures by Great Plains Structures in the amount of $32,025.00.  City Administrator Schelkoph, said damage to the structure was caused by a high wind.

An insurance claim was filed.

 

Approved a Contract with Jordan Transformer, LLC to Drain, Inspect, and Report the cause of the motor trip in a URS Tap Changer that is attached to a Transformer, in the amount of $14,234.00. City Administrator Schelkoph, said the motor is failing and a leak was discovered.

 

 

Approved a Contract with Resco to purchase transformers in the amount of $19,093.00.  City Administrator Schelkoph, said the request was brought before the Commission as the cost is over $10,000.

 

The City Commission, considered accepting bid for solid waste transfer contract.  City Administrator Schelkoph said five engineering firms gave presentations of proposals to the city.

He said a committee recommends KLJ be the engineer firm of choice.

The City Commission approved the recommendation.  Commissioners Bishop and Magnuson voted against.

Commissioner Bishop a member of the committee hearing the presentation voted against the recommendation, saying it was time to give another firm the opportunity to work on a project.

 

Approved was accepting bid for the sale of City Parking Lot south of Hub-Mac more specifically described as Parcel Number 63-3473111, Lots 3-6, Block 31 Original Townsite.

 

 

Approved the Technical Support Services Agreement with Barnes County.  City Auditor Richter said the rated is $75 per hour, and increase of $25 per hour.

CITY ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT

David Schelkoph said a crack developed on the east side of the old power house building, cause by pile driving with the permanent flood control project.

He thanked the fire department for the successful State Fire Fighters Convention held in Valley City last week.

He said the Comprehensive and Transportation Plan subcommittee has been formed, and that a September public meeting will be held to present the preliminary plan.

 

CITY UPDATES & COMMISSION REPORTS

City Auditor Richter said the city budgeting will start soon, and passed along numbers to work with from the state.  She reminded residents that June 12th is the city elections, where candidates will be elected, as opposed to being nominated.

City Assessor Hansen a change was noted at the Barnes County Board of Equalization meeting, concerning a parcel.

 

City Fire Chief Retterath pointed out, a successful outdoor siren test was held Tuesday.

He thanked everyone involved with making the State Fire Fighter Convention successful, throughout the community.

 

KLJ updated the permanent flood control project on-going work.

 

Mayor Carlsrud also thanked everyone involved in the state fire fighters convention, and encouraged residents to vote on June 12th.

He said public works has hired summer staff to catch up on the work schedule.

The meeting was shown live on CSi Cable 68, followed by replays.

 

Jamestown  (NDHP)  ‐‐ The Jamestown to Valley City segment of the 2018 Torch Run for Special Olympics North Dakota took place on Tuesday, June 5. Over 20 law enforcement volunteers from Jamestown and Valley City carried the torch east along Interstate 94 for opening ceremonies for the 2018 State Summer Games June 7‐8 at the Fargo Civic Center. The summer games will feature more than 600 athletes.

The news release says, Special Olympics athletes from across the state, competing in several events including track and field, aquatics, unified volleyball, and many more. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics and the theme is “heers to 50 Years of Inclusion Revolution.

Bismarck, ND  (CSi)  – The Industrial Commission of North Dakota has approved $4.6 million in Outdoor Heritage Fund grants for 13 conservation and recreation projects benefiting communities across the state.  The funding, generated from oil and gas production tax revenue, supports projects such as access to public and private lands for sportsmen, farming and ranching stewardship practices, fish and wildlife habitat preservation, and outdoor recreation areas.

Local projects included in the funding are:

$943,489 – Audubon Dakota: Cost-share to fund native prairie restoration, invasive species control, and grazing system support to private landowners and open up additional grazing acres at Audubon’s Alkali Lake Sanctuary.  Approximately 8,963 acres in Stutsman County will be impacted.

$33,000 – Jamestown Parks and Recreational Foundation: Creation of an accessible sensory garden.

 

The next application deadline for the funding program is October 1, 2018. More information about the program, including the application process, can be found on the Outdoor Heritage Fund website at http://www.nd.gov/ndic/outdoor-infopage.htm.

 

Jamestown The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reduced the release from Jamestown Dam this week to 50 cfs, a reduction of 200 cfs.

Currently 50 cfs is being released from the Pipestem Dam for a combined 100 cfs flowing through Jamestown.

The pool level at Jamestown Reservoir is currently 1,431 feet above sea level.

The Jamestown Dam release will be shut off for about a week in August to work on the stilling basin below the dam.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — An 85-year-old Fargo man accused of shooting and killing his wife during an alleged double suicide pact has been arraigned in his hospital room.Louis Averson is being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound, so his arraignment took place at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo Tuesday. Prosecutors say fatally shot his 85-year-old wife, Ila Averson, after both tried to die by carbon monoxide poisoning in their garage last Friday.Louis Averson says his wife was in poor health, so they decided to take their own lives. Anderson is charged with felony murder with intention.

Averson told Judge Frank Racek to do “whatever you gotta do” because he wasn’t going anywhere.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled July 11.

 

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — One person was taken to a hospital after a fire in a Fargo apartment building.

Firefighters responded to the scene about 11 a.m. Tuesday and forced their way into the apartment. They extinguished a small fire in the bathroom.

The person in the apartment was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately specified. Authorities say it damaged a small appliance in the bathroom, and there was light smoke damage in the rest of the apartment.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck man accused of having marijuana and a gun near a school last fall has avoided jail time.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that a judge on Tuesday sentenced 18-year-old Zachary Roller to three years of supervised probation with credit for 16 days spent in custody.

Roller also was ordered to pay $1,025 in court fees, forfeit his handgun and get addiction treatment if it’s deemed necessary.

It wasn’t clear why Roller was at the school. He was not an enrolled student. He pleaded guilty in May to drug charges, and a weapons charge was dismissed.

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Federal officials say a North Dakota civil construction company will pay $59,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit.The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced the settlement Tuesday with Keller Paving and Landscaping Inc. of Minot.The EEOC’s lawsuit alleged that the company violated federal law by subjecting a female truck driver to a hostile work environment because of her sex. The suit alleged that work conditions were so intolerable the woman was forced to resign.

According to the lawsuit, several male co-workers sexually harassed the woman. The woman eventually quit her job.

Company president Dean Keller says Keller Paving and Landscaping denies the allegations but settled to void costly legal fees. Keller says the company had not received any complaints before the incident and has not had any since.

 

 

 

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota businessman and philanthropist has donated $100 million to the National University System, a nonprofit that focuses on education and philanthropy initiatives.

The donation by T. Denny Sanford is the largest in the nonprofit’s history and comes a year after Sanford gave $28 million to the network, which supports students looking for alternative ways to learn.

The money will expand the system’s Sanford Harmony program, which aims to help students learn to work together and respect one another. System officials say the program could reach up to 30 million students nationwide and around the world.

Sanford’s gift brings total funding to system programs to about $170 million, from various sources.

Sanford is best known for donating about $1 billion to the Dakotas-based health system that carries his name.

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has appointed two new citizen members to the state Board of Higher Education, including a school superintendent who survived an effort to oust her from her job.

Burgum announced Tuesday that New Rockford-Sheyenne Superintendent Jill Louters and Devils Lake attorney Daniel Traynor will begin serving four-year terms on July 1. Burgum also selected Ashley Thornton of Williston State College as the student member to the board.

Louters was investigated by the New Rockford-Sheyenne School Board president for staying in the same hotel room with her son and elementary school boys during an archery tournament in March. A vote to fire Louters failed by a 4-2 vote.

The board has eight voting members appointed by the governor to oversee the system’s 11 public colleges and universities.

 

 

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — One of two people charged with misdemeanors for unfurling a banner protesting the Dakota Access pipeline from the rafters of U.S. Bank Stadium during a Minnesota Vikings game has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Thirty-four-year-old Karl Zimmermann Mayo, of Minneapolis, entered the plea for creating a public nuisance Monday in Hennepin County District Court. Misdemeanor counts of trespassing and burglary were dismissed. The Star Tribune says he’ll serve a year of probation and perform 30 hours of community service.

The other person who climbed to the rafters to unleash the banner, 28-year-old Sen Holiday, is currently on trial after she pleaded not guilty to the same misdemeanors.

The banner urged Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank to divest from the $3.8 billion pipeline. Fans seated below the banner were evacuated.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown Rotary Club  hosts the annual East-West senior boys soccer match on Wednesday, June 6 at Jamestown High School’s Rotary Field.

The match features senior players selected by their respective coaches to represent the Western Dakota Association and the Eastern Dakota Conference. The West plays the East at 6:30 p.m.

Jamestown High School’s Logan Henke, Joe Parsons, Lukas Rosenau and Austin Shafer will be representing the Blue Jays on the West side.

— Chris Iannetta hit a two-run homer off Anthony DeSclafani in his return to the mound, and Carlos Gonzalez added a three-run shot to power Colorado over Cincinnati 9-6. The Rockies ended a four-game losing streak that was their longest since they dropped eight in a row last June.

UNDATED (AP) — Tim Lincecum won’t be making a major league comeback with the Texas Rangers, who had signed the two-time NL Cy Young winner during spring training with plans for him to be a reliever.

The Rangers granted Lincecum his unconditional release today after the end of his 30-day rehab assignment at Triple-A Round Rock.

General manager Jon Daniels said, “Despite best intentions and a lot of hard work, we just didn’t feel that it was the right move to bring him up right now.”

— The Red Sox placed left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz on the 10-day disabled list with tendinitis in his left biceps.

— The St. Louis Cardinals activated All-Stars Yadier Molina and Carlos Martínez from the 10-day disabled list. The moves were announced before the series opener with Miami.

— The Tampa Bay Rays placed starting pitcher Chris Archer on the 10-day disabled list. However, manager Kevin Cash said he did not expect the right-hander’s first career DL stint to be a lengthy stay.

— New York Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery will have Tommy John surgery on his elbow this week.

— Yankees manager Aaron Boone says he’s “excited” and “grateful” after Major League Baseball agreed today to change the time of New York’s July 8 game at Toronto from 8 p.m. to 1 p.m. Originally scheduled for 1 p.m., the game was moved to the evening last week after being selected for broadcast on ESPN. That meant New York, which has a doubleheader at Baltimore beginning at 4:05 p.m. the following day, would have played three games in approximately 24 hours.

 

NHL-ISLANDERS SHAKEUP

NEW YORK (AP) — Lou Lamoriello moved quickly to shake up the New York Islanders by firing general manager Garth Snow and coach Doug Weight and naming himself the team’s new GM just two weeks after taking over as president of hockey operations.

Lamoriello made the moves that begin to reshape the organization in his image, two weeks to the day ownership said he’d have “full authority over all hockey matters.” Lamoriello left the Toronto Maple Leafs to run the Islanders and will begin the search for a new coach immediately.

The Islanders missed the playoffs eight times in Snow’s 12 years as general manager, including the past two seasons.

 

NFL-GIANTS-GETTLEMAN LYMPHOMA

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has lymphoma, and he says the prognosis for his recovery is “positive.”

Gettleman, hired in the offseason to replace Jerry Reese, released a statement Tuesday about his health. He says he recently “underwent an annual physical, during which it was discovered I have lymphoma. Over the past week, I have undergone more testing to determine the course of treatment, which is scheduled to start in the very near future.

“The doctor’s outlook for the treatment and the prognosis is positive, and so am I.”

HORSE RACING-BELMONT-DRAW

NEW YORK (AP) — Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Justify will break from the No. 1 post as the early 4-5 favorite in the Belmont Stakes as the colt tries to complete a Triple Crown sweep.

Trainer Bob Baffert is not a fan of the inside post for his horses, no matter what the race.

Justify will take on nine rivals in the 1½-mile race Saturday at Belmont Park. Trainer Todd Pletcher will saddle Noble Indy and Vino Rosso, and he says Baffert must be nervous about Justify’s post position.

 

CAULEY ACCIDENT

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Police have released more details about the crash that injured PGA Tour player Bud Cauley and three others in Ohio.

A report released Tuesday by Dublin police shows 37-year-old David Crawford was driving at the time of the crash near Muirfield Village Golf Club Friday night that also injured former NHL Columbus Blue Jackets player James Wisniewski.

Police say the car went off the right side of the road, hit a culvert and went airborne before striking a large tree. The car then hit several smaller trees before coming to rest in a ditch.

Cauley suffered broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a leg fracture. He later said the accident was the “scariest night of my life.”

No charges had been filed as of Tuesday.
