Jamestown  (CSi)  The City of Jamestown reports that due to above average mosquito count in the NE area of the City, fogging operations for adult mosquitoes is scheduled to begin Thursday, June 7 & Friday, June 8.

Fogging operations will take place between approximately 8:30 PM (dusk) until approximately 6:00 AM.

Parents are advised to keep children out of the streets and away from the fogging machines.

Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling in the vicinity of the fogging units.

All fogging operations are contingent upon weather conditions. 

 

 

Jamestown (CSi)  The Veterans administration Board of Appeals has resolved a record number of claims to date for Fiscal Year 2018.

On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Stutsman County Veterans Service Office, David Bratton said, the Board is on track to meet and exceed the FY 2018 total goal of reviewing an historic 81,000 appeals by September 30th this year.

As of May 27th this year the Board of Appeals has signed more than 53,650 decisions, 86 percent more than the same period last year.

The full implementation of the Appeals Modernization Act is anticipated on February 14, 2019, and will offer veterans more choice and control over their claims and appeals process.

Bratton is available at his office in the basement of the Law Enforcement Center in Jamestown gives assistance on this or any other services.

The office hours are Monday through Friday from 8-a.m. to noon, and 1-p.m., to 5-p.m., except federal holidays.

On another topic, Bratton pointed out that President Trump has signed an Executive Order supporting mental health care for transitioning  service members.

It directs the VA, The Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security to collaborate to provide, to the extent consistent with law, seamless access to mental health care and suicide prevention resources for veterans, with a focus on the first year after separation from military service.

The White House will closely monitor the outcomes of the Joint Action Plan.

 

Jamestown  (NDFU)  – North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) President Mark Watne returned from Moscow, Russia, this week after speaking at a general assembly gathering of the World Farmers’ Organization (WFO). He presented information on U.S. multi-peril crop insurance, and shared ideas on farmer-owned concepts.

“Regardless of where we travel, farms and farmers’ concerns are similar,” he said. “We lack income to support our operations and it is time that farmers are paid for producing essential food.”

Based in Rome, WFO is an international organization of farmers, who work to bring together producers and cooperative organizations to develop policies that favor and support farmer causes in developed and developing countries around the world.

Also representing the U.S. in Russia were Dave Velde, National Farmers Union general counsel, and Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish.

Velde said farmers from all over the world discussed weather-generated damage to crops, buildings and livestock. “Whether you believe in climate change or not, the fact is, catastrophic weather events are on the rise,” he said.

Members of the assembly also appointed Wertish to chair their newly formed livestock working group. He will lead the developing dialogue on livestock issues around the world.

 

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota farmers are nearly finished seeding the state’s staple spring wheat crop.The federal Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that 97 percent of the crop is in the ground, ahead of the long-term average of 90 percent. Only 3 percent of the crop is rated less than fair.Planting of other small grains, corn, soybeans, canola, flaxseed, potatoes, dry beans and dry peas also is nearing completion. About two-thirds of the sunflower crop is seeded, ahead of the average pace.Topsoil moisture supplies statewide are rated 69 percent adequate to surplus and subsoil moisture is 57 percent in those categories.Pasture and range conditions statewide are mostly rated fair, good or excellent. Stockwater supplies are mostly adequate to surplus.

 

BELCOURT, N.D. (AP) — A suspicious package prompted the evacuation of the Turtle Mountain Tribe’s administration building in Belcourt.

Tribal Chairman Jamie Azure tells KMOT-TV that a package was delivered to the facility Tuesday afternoon with a name that matched threatening emails previously sent to the tribe.

Tribal leaders told everyone to leave the building about 4 p.m. and called in bomb squad investigators. The package was later deemed harmless.

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck man accused of having marijuana and a gun near a school last fall has avoided jail time.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that a judge on Tuesday sentenced 18-year-old Zachary Roller to three years of supervised probation with credit for 16 days spent in custody.

Roller also was ordered to pay $1,025 in court fees, forfeit his handgun and get addiction treatment if it’s deemed necessary.

It wasn’t clear why Roller was at the school. He was not an enrolled student. He pleaded guilty in May to drug charges, and a weapons charge was dismissed.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Supreme Court says a female officer went too far during a pat-down search when she removed cash and drug paraphernalia from the bra of a woman with a history of concealing contraband.

Defendant Jessica Broom appealed to the high court after a judge refused to suppress evidence from the March 2017 search in Bismarck. Police said Broom’s anxiety, criminal history and ability to hide items warranted the officer to check inside her bra. Broom said her criminal history did not include concealing weapons.

The officer testified she felt a “large, soft bulge” inside Broom’s bra during the pat-down, but it was nothing similar to a gun or knife. Justices say that did not justify an invasive search. They threw out Broom’s guilty pleas on two drug charges.

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A leak resulting from a damaged pipeline in McKenzie County spilled an estimated 8,400 gallons of produced water, impacting rangeland.

Produced water is a mixture of saltwater and oil that can contain drilling chemicals.

The state Health Department says the leak happened May 29 when a pipeline was struck by crews installing a water line about 15 miles southeast of Watford City. The pipeline is part of a gathering system for a saltwater disposal facility owned by Hanna SWD.

State officials have inspected the site and are monitoring cleanup.

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Agriculture Department has unveiled an interactive web-based map to help consumers more easily find local foods in the state.

The map contains layers for farmers markets, on-farm sales, roadside stands, community supported agriculture programs, u-pick operations and vineyards.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says the online map will help people find food grown, raised, harvested and made in North Dakota.

The map also shows produce donation sites that will accept garden-grown produce for charitable causes.

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Inmates at the North Dakota State Penitentiary in Bismarck are planting with a unique purpose.

A $10,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has allowed inmates to create a big garden on the prison’s property. The inmates are tending the garden to help the homeless or those who don’t have enough food.

KXMB-TV says the produce the inmates are growing will go to Ministry on the Margin and Ruth Meier’s Hospitality House in Bismarck and the Great Plains Food Bank.

OAKES, N.D. (AP) — A 10-year-old boy from a town in North Dakota will compete at a world archery championship contest this weekend.

Braysen Sagert will participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) World Championships June 7-9 in Louisville, Kentucky. Sagert is the first archer from Oakes to ever qualify for the competition, the Aberdeen American News reported .

Sagert began practicing archery when he was 4. He started competing a year later with the Oakes National Archery in the Schools Program club.

Braysen’s father Shawn Sagert says, “Braysen started coming with me to shoot instead of going to day care.  He’s just really loved shooting since that beginning. As a parent, I was a nervous wreck to be honest.  I was more nervous than (Braysen) was, which was good.”

The young archer finished at the NASP National Championship with a score of 279, qualifying for a place in this weekend’s world championships.

Sagert said his strategy for scoring high at the world event is “just thinking about shooting, really.  I might be a little nervous because I’ve never been at world championship. It might be a little harder to get focused, but I don’t know. I just want to have fun.”

LAS VEGAS (AP) — If the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup title, Devante Smith-Pelly won’t be going to the White House to celebrate with President Donald Trump.

Canada’s Postmedia quoted Smith-Pelly as saying “Some of the things he’s said are pretty gross. I’m not too into politics, so I don’t know all his other views, but his rhetoric I definitely don’t agree with.

It hasn’t come up here, but I think I already have my mind made up.”

The 25-year-old Smith-Pelly, one of two black Capitals players, is from the Toronto area.

—Tim Anderson had two hits and drove in two runs as the Chicago White Sox topped the Minnesota Twins 5-2.

— Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer to snap a scoreless tie in the top of the 13th inning, and Giancarlo Stanton followed with a homer lifting the New York Yankees to a 3-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yanks have won seven of their last eight games.

CARDINALS-REYES

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals have lost right-hander Alex Reyes for the rest of the season. Reyes had Tommy John surgery Wednesday in Philadelphia.

Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch said recovery time is expected to be six months and the team expects Reyes to be ready for spring training.

Girsch said, “The good news is that when they went in, the tendon was partially frayed.”

 

ANGELS-SIMMONS DL

 

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday because of a sprained right ankle.

Simmons was injured Tuesday when he slipped coming down the dugout stairs before the 1-0 win over the Kansas City Royals. He left the game after the second inning.

 

DIAMONDBACKS-ROYALS TRADE

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired outfielder Jon Jay in a trade with the Kansas City Royals in exchange for two minor league pitchers.

With two outfielders on the DL, the 33-year-old Jay gives Arizona an experienced outfielder they desperately need.

A.J. Pollack is out with a fractured thumb, and Steven Souza Jr., with a right pectoral strain. Jay is a career .290 hitter and is in his ninth year in the majors.

Arizona sent Elvis Luciano and Gabe Speier to Kansas City.

Luciano, 18, is a right-hander from Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic.

Speier is a 23-year-old left-hander who’s in his sixth year in pro ball.

 

OBIT-RED SCHOENDIENST

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Red Schoendienst (SHAYN’-deenst), the Hall of Fame second baseman who managed the St. Louis Cardinals to two pennants and a World Series championship died Wednesday.

He was 95.

Alfred Fred Schoendienst wore the Cardinals uniform for 45 seasons as a player, coach and manager and he remained involved as a special assistant to the general manager.

A 10-time All-Star with the Cardinals, Giants and Braves, Schoendienst was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1989 by the Veterans Committee.

He ranks second in Cardinals history with 1,041 managerial victories. His No. 2 jersey was retired in 1996.

 

MICHIGAN ST-ASSAULT

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Three former Michigan State University football players accused in the sexual assault of a woman won’t be going to jail after pleading guilty.

Josh King, Donnie Corley Jr. and Demetric Vance were sentenced Wednesday to three years’ probation, as well as sex offender treatment and therapy.

They pleaded guilty in April to seducing an unmarried woman, a reduced charge.

They could have been imprisoned for up to five years.

 

MICHIGAN-BEILEIN

 

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — John Beilein has decided he’s staying on as head basketball coach at Michigan after exploring the possibility of coaching the Detroit Pistons.

Beilein tweeted Wednesday, “I love the University of Michigan and I am excited about coaching our Men’s Basketball Team next season and in the years to come!”

The 65-year old Beilein has coached at Michigan for 11 seasons with a 248-143 record. He has led the Wolverines to two Final Fours, losing in the national title game this year and in 2013.

 

BRONCOS-RAY-SURGERY

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that Denver Broncos outside linebacker Shane Ray will be undergoing surgery on his left wrist.

Ray could be out of action for three months after undergoing the procedure.

The person spoke to The AP on the condition of anonymity Wednesday because the team hasn’t announced the news.

Ray has already had three surgeries on the wrist which he dislocated last July.

 

US-STEWART

 

NEW YORK (AP) — Former midfielder Earnie Stewart is the new general manager of the U.S. men’s national soccer team. Stewart had been sporting director at Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union since 2015.

When he starts on the job in August, Stewart will have to find a new head coach for USA soccer.

Bruce Arena resigned after the loss to Trinidad and Tobago last October that knocked the U.S. out of this year’s World Cup.

“Making the right choice is the most important thing,” Stewart said during a telephone news conference. “It’s process over speed.”

Stewart played on the U.S. national team and participated in the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups.

 

SPORTS BETTING-NH

 

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey lawmakers are expected to give final approval to a sports betting bill on Thursday.

The bill up for final votes in the state Senate and Assembly would allow New Jersey casinos and racetracks to accept sports bets.

New Jersey won a U.S. Supreme Court case last month, overturning a federal law that limited sports betting to only four states.

All states are now free to pass laws legalizing gambling.

 

TENNIS-FRENCH OPEN

PARIS (AP) — Play has resumed in the rain-interrupted men’s quarterfinals at Roland Garros, and 10-time champion Rafael Nadal quickly grabbed the second set of his match against Diego Schwartzman.

Nadal needed only two points to even his match at a set apiece.

He was serving for the second set at 5-3, 30-15 after having dropped the first by a 6-4 score when play was halted by a storm on Wednesday evening.

Also back in action after a suspension was the quarterfinal between past U.S. Open champions Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro.

They were at 5-all in a first-set tiebreaker when their match was stopped. But del Potro grabbed the first two points played on Thursday to take that set 7-6 (5).

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The PGA Tour is in Memphis, Tennessee for the St. Jude Classic that starts Thursday at TPC Southwind.

A week ahead of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, New York, defending U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka will tee it up in Memphis.

No. 2 ranked Dustin Johnson, a winner in Memphis is 2012 and Phil Mickelson are also in the field that includes six of the world’s top 28 ranked players.
