Bismarck (CSi) On June 7th, 2018, the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission awarded approximately $3.35 million in infrastructure grants to multiple public airports throughout the state.
These state infrastructure grants are used to help fund numerous high priority airport projects throughout the state of North Dakota. The revenue source for these airport grants is derived primarily from state tax collections on aviation fuel and aircraft sales. A majority of the state grant allocations will also match federal grants that are anticipated to be received for 2018 airport projects. These state grants are critical in maintaining the needed infrastructure to support the aviation industry, which is a major contributor to the state’s economy.
In 2015, the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission completed a research project to estimate the annual economic impact that the 89 public-use airports provide to North Dakota. The research concluded that the airports have an estimated annual economic impact of $1.6 billion dollars on the state’s overall economy while providing support for over 12,200 jobs. More information on the study is available from the Aeronautics Commission website at www.aero.nd.gov.
North Dakota Aeronautics Commission Director, Kyle Wanner says, “The directive that the state legislature has provided to the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission is to encourage and assist in the development of airports in the state. One of the primary ways that our organization accomplishes that mission is by working to direct federal and state funds to North Dakota communities for the continued development of their airports. Airports are vital to the state’s economic development and provide much needed services for our communities. We are excited to provide these grants and to help be a part of the infrastructure solutions that our communities require.”
Jamestown Regional Airport received $179,000 five percent of the project cost of $3.59 million for runway and taxway rehab, and removal of a taxiway.
Other projects include:
Barnes County Airport: $41,478, construction of a wildlife fence.
Carrington: $26,280 for hangar construction.
Edgeley: $15,900, jet fuel system, and beacon.
Ellendale: $5,036 crack sealing.
LaMoure: $3,095 crack sealing.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp continues to hold a big fundraising edge over Rep. Kevin Cramer, her Republican challenger.
Federal reports required ahead of Tuesday’s primary show Heitkamp raised nearly $796,000 from April 1 through May 23. That brings her total to date to $10.1 million, with $5.2 million in the bank.
Cramer raised more than $562,000 during the reporting period. Filings show his total to date is $2.4 million, with $1.9 million cash on hand.
The North Dakota race is seen as critical for control of the closely divided Senate.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A Minot woman has been sentenced to serve six months in jail and three years on supervised probation for stalking her ex-husband’s girlfriend last year.
The Minot Daily News reports 49-year-old Kathy Schuler also was ordered to have a mental health evaluation and to have no contact with the woman.
Schuler was accused of creating fake and disparaging online profiles of the woman, using photos lifted from her Facebook page.
Schuler’s defense lawyer had previously tried to argue that her actions were protected free speech, but a judge rejected that argument.
Schuler on Wednesday entered an Alford plea to a felony stalking charge under a deal with prosecutors. That means she doesn’t admit wrongdoing but acknowledges there’s enough evidence for a conviction. The court treats it like a guilty plea.
COLFAX, N.D. (AP) — A southeastern North Dakota school district where alleged hazing at the high school led to charges against five boys has hired a new principal.
Britney Gandhi will replace Bruce Anderson, who is retiring from the Richland 44 school in Colfax. She’s been a principal in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and is the wife of Fargo’s incoming school superintendent.
Authorities in mid-February referred five boys to juvenile court following alleged misconduct in the boys’ locker room at the Colfax school of 160 students. The offenses allegedly committed against other boys included felonious restraint, terrorizing, hazing and sexual assault.
The school’s superintendent resigned, and Anderson retired. The athletic director also departed, though it’s unclear whether he was fired or resigned.
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A Morton County farmer accused of sexually assaulting two teenage boys has been sentenced to probation.
Fifty-year-old James Hopfauf, of rural Flasher, had said after his arrest last fall that the teens were simply helping him with his bad back.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that he pleaded guilty on Tuesday to two counts of felony sexual assault in a deal with prosecutors.
He was given three years of supervised probation and ordered to pay $525 in fees. He also is required to register as a sex offender and get counseling. Should he violate his probation, he could be sent to prison for a year.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A judge has dismissed Montana-Dakota Utilities’ eminent domain proceeding for a proposed natural gas pipeline in North Dakota.
Landowner attorney Lynn Boughey called the decision a “huge case for property rights, and the little guy.”
The Minot Daily News reports that North Central District Judge Gary Lee ruled that harm to the private landowner outweighed any public benefits from the pipeline.
MDU wants to build the 3,000-foot-long (915-meter-long) pipeline to service a BNSF Railway facility west of Minot. The utility obtained the necessary permits and approvals from state and federal agencies but had to resort to eminent domain to cross the private land.
The judge ruled the pipeline would be convenient but not a necessity. MDU officials had no immediate comment, saying they’re still evaluating the decision.

SPORTS BETTING-NJ
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Major League Baseball, the NBA and the PGA Tour want New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy to “fix” the sports betting law on his desk to address concerns about the integrity of betting on their games.
The leagues are seeking payments to help them police betting patterns, and want better information sharing. They say the law passed Thursday by the state Legislature does not address those concerns.
Lawmakers rejected the integrity fee payments.
It remains unclear when sports betting might begin in New Jersey, or when the Democratic governor might act on the bill.
