BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and her Republican rival, Rep. Kevin Cramer, agree there’s a need for compassion for children separated from their families at the southern border.

But there are some differences in the stances of the candidates in the Senate race that could be critical to control of the chamber.

Heitkamp in recent days has focused more on the human element in her statements, while Cramer has spotlighted the need for immigration reform and border security.

University of North Dakota’s political science expert Mark Jendrysik (jehn-DRY’-sihk) says both candidates are “trying to thread the needle” on the issue.

Voters are listening. Fargo retired nurse David Gausman says the border issue has cemented his vote for Heitkamp. But Fargo resident Rob Olson believes Cramer would do a better job strengthening the borders.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Legislature’s research arm has refined a proposed policy regarding workplace and sexual harassment in North Dakota’s Capitol.

The updated proposal expands the list of legislative leaders designated to field complaints, more clearly outlines potential punishments and adds a training component.

The Legislative Procedure and Arrangements Committee hopes to finalize a policy in September so it’s in place for the 2019 Legislature’s organizational session in December.

Legislative leaders have said they aren’t aware of any sexual harassment allegations in the Capitol. But they decided late last year to update existing policy that bars harassment but provides no process for the formal reporting of complaints.

House Republican Majority Leader Al Carlson calls it “still a work in progress” but says “we’re headed down the right path.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota House candidate is facing a misdemeanor criminal charge for allegedly publishing inaccurate information about an opponent.

The charge against Republican District 47 candidate Duane Sand carries a maximum punishment of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine.

Sand lost the primary election last week to incumbent Reps. George Keiser and Larry Klemin. Keiser filed a police report against Sand on May 29, alleging a flier sent from Sand’s headquarters in Bismarck misstated a vote he cast in 2013 and violated state law.

Sand ran an apology ad in The Bismarck Tribune June 3, saying he had misstated Keiser’s vote on the bill.

Sand told the newspaper in an interview that he wasn’t aware of the criminal charge but that it was Keiser’s right to pursue the case.

LINCOLN, N.D. (AP) — Residents of Lincoln are being told to boil tap water before they consume it, after one home’s water supply twice tested positive for E. coli bacteria.

Mayor Gerarld Wise says he believes it’s an isolated situation. But The Bismarck Tribune reports officials are taking precautions as they look for the source of the contamination.

Nearly 1,300 homes are affected by the boil order.

The state Health Department is testing water from nine locations in the city near Bismarck, and the boil order won’t be lifted unless all of the tests come back negative.
