He was sentenced Monday in a courtroom packed with both victims and family members. Update…

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — An appeals court has rejected a former Minot city attorney’s claim that she was fired in 2014 in retaliation for a whistleblower complaint over sex-based harassment.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland in February 2017 dismissed Colleen Auer’s complaint for lack of evidence, and she appealed to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. That court upheld Hovland’s ruling on Thursday, the Minot Daily News reported .

Auer was employed by the city from March 31, 2014, until her firing on May 2, 2015. She reported acting City Manager Cindy Hemphill for sex-based harassment about three weeks into her one-year probationary term as city attorney, according to court records. She alleged Hemphill made impossible demands regarding certain aspects of her work, prevented her from performing other key duties and frequently required her to act against her better judgment as an attorney.

Hemphill fired Auer the next day. Auer accused Hemphill of violating state and local law by firing her without first consulting City Council members, but the council voted to ratify the termination under the reason of “insubordination.”

Auer then filed a lawsuit alleging the city retaliated against her for reporting sex-based harassment and discrimination.

The appeals court concluded Auer’s allegations were “unreasonable.”

“Auer’s only articulated basis for concluding she was experiencing sex-based harassment was that Hemphill unfavorably compared her work style to the previous city attorney,” according to the court’s opinion. “We cannot infer bias from so little.”

Auer later alleged Hemphill engaged in sex stereotyping by suggesting she should be more approachable, more open to feedback and less aggressive. But the court wrote that Auer never made a sex stereotyping report, so that could not have been the reason the city fired her.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is considering revoking the security clearances of a half dozen former Obama administration officials and critics of his presidency.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that the president is “exploring the mechanisms” to strip clearance from former CIA director John Brennan, along with former FBI director Jim Comey, former national intelligence director James Clapper and others.

Sanders is accusing the officials of having “politicized and in some cases monetized their public service and security clearances” as well as “making baseless accusations” against the president.

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky tweeted earlier Monday that he was planning to raise the issue of revoking Brennan’s clearance at a meeting with Trump.

Brennan last week described Trump’s press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “nothing short of treasonous.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s national security adviser is echoing the combative warning to Iran against deploying any more threatening language toward the U.S.

Ambassador John Bolton says he’s spoken with Trump over the last several days and, “President Trump told me that if Iran does anything at all to the negative, they will pay a price like few countries have ever paid before.”

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders declines to say whether Trump had consulted with national security aides before sending his all-caps Sunday night tweet that warned Iran might “SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE.”

She says: “The president consults with his national security team on a daily basis.”

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) — An investigation of a tourist boat accident on a Missouri lake that claimed 17 lives will look at whether operators of the boat violated Coast Guard-issued limitations by venturing into the water as thunderstorms threatened and struck the region.

The Ride the Ducks in Branson tour on Thursday occurred as the area was under a severe thunderstorm warning. A storm that moved through the area generated near-hurricane strength winds.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Tasha Sadowicz says the boat that sank passed an annual inspection in February. But Sadowicz says the “certificate of inspection” places limitations on when boats can enter the water, based on wind speed and the height of waves.

Sadowicz says investigators want to know whether the boat violated the limitations, and whether operators were adequately monitoring the weather.
