The annual SafeWise 10 Safest Cities in North Dakota report reviewed the most recent 2016 FBI crime statistics and census population data to evaluate the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery) in each city per 1000 people. The number of property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and car theft) was factored into the results.
Hazen was listed as the safest city in North Dakota for 2018. Carrington was second, followed by Stanley, New Town, Lincoln, Lisbon, Devils Lake, Wahpeton, Dickinson and Beulah.
Of the ten safest cities in the Peace Garden State, seven reported less than one violent crime per 1,000 people in 2016. The top two safest cities—Hazen and Carrington—reported zero violent crime. According to the most recent FBI crime statistics, North Dakota experienced twelve murders, but none took place in the cities on our list. Incidents of robbery were also few and far between, with 80% of the state’s ten safest cities citing no crimes of this type.
Violent crime is a top concern when it comes to choosing a safe place to live—but so is property crime, especially burglary. With this is mind, SafeWise discovered that 70% of the state’s safest cities saw fewer than ten burglaries. Dickinson, with over 25,000 residents, cited just forty-three.
Cities that fell below identified population thresholds or failed to submit a complete FBI crime report were excluded from the ranking system.
