(CSi)  SafeWise, an online safety resource, named Carrington the second safest city in North Dakota on Monday, saying there were no violent crimes and just over three property crimes in its review.

The annual SafeWise 10 Safest Cities in North Dakota report reviewed the most recent 2016 FBI crime statistics and census population data to evaluate the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery) in each city per 1000 people. Stillwater County Coroner Terry Nuystul tells The Billings Gazette that Lorenda Lee Jenkins of Columbus, North Dakota, died Sunday morning.

The Montana Highway Patrol says a 39-year-old man driving the SUV overcorrected when it drifted off the road, causing it to roll.

Nuystul says the driver and three girls, ages 11, 15, and 16, were injured. The girls were ejected from the vehicle. All four were hospitalized and Nystrom says two remained in “very critical” condition on Monday morning.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — An appeals court has rejected a former Minot city attorney’s claim that she was fired in 2014 in retaliation for a whistleblower complaint over sex-based harassment.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland in February 2017 dismissed Colleen Auer’s complaint for lack of evidence, and she appealed to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. That court upheld Hovland’s ruling on Thursday, the Minot Daily News reported .

Auer was employed by the city from March 31, 2014, until her firing on May 2, 2015. She reported acting City Manager Cindy Hemphill for sex-based harassment about three weeks into her one-year probationary term as city attorney, according to court records. She alleged Hemphill made impossible demands regarding certain aspects of her work, prevented her from performing other key duties and frequently required her to act against her better judgment as an attorney.

Hemphill fired Auer the next day. Auer accused Hemphill of violating state and local law by firing her without first consulting City Council members, but the council voted to ratify the termination under the reason of “insubordination.”

Annual statistics from the Bismarck Police Department show drug violations rose from 753 in 2016 to 900 last year. That compares with 616 five years ago.

Chief Dan Donlin tells The Bismarck Tribune that area drug detectives and task forces are “overwhelmed.”

Donlin says one initiative his department has taken is shifting investigations to finding where drugs are coming from and who is bringing them into the community — trying to make arrests higher up the chain.

He also says his department has been collaborating more with mental health and addiction services to get addicts help rather than just locking them up.

In sports…

Jamestown  (uj.edu)  University of Jamestown will now offer a Trapshooting Club to its students starting fall of 2018. The Club is co-ed, with male and female students competing together.

Trapshooting, also referred to as clay-pigeon shooting, is making a huge resurgence across the country.

Dean of Engagement & Student Affairs, Dustin Jensen says, “Both North Dakota and Minnesota have huge high school programs, so we believe it is important to provide what potential students enjoy and desire.”

UJ Director of Campus Safety, Liz Kapp, will be the Trapshooting Club advisor. Liz was born and raised in Jamestown, ND and has been involved in various capacities of law enforcement for more than 26 years. She is the President and founder of the North Dakota Women’s Law Enforcement Association. She is also on the Safe Shelter Board of Directors and is a member of SART (Sexual Assault Response Team), VFW Women’s Auxiliary, Jamestown Karate Association, and North Dakota Fraternal Oder of Police, as well as a past member of the North Dakota Peace Officers Association.

(She’s also running for Stutsman County Sheriff in the November election, against incumbent sheriff, Chad Kaiser.)

The Club will practice twice a week in September, October and April at the Buffalo City Gun Club. During the first year, UJ will host frequent inter-squad competitions, as well as web-based competitions against other programs in the region.  As the team grows, the University plans to incorporate travel into the team’s schedule.

Established in 1883, the University of Jamestown is a private, liberal arts university granting Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Science in Nursing degrees, as well as Master’s Degrees in Education, Leadership, Clinical Counseling, and a Fargo-based Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. With the Jamestown Journey to Success, emphasis is placed not only on preparing students academically in their chosen areas of study, but also on preparing them through a student-centered experience.

Jamestown (uj.edu)  Former University of Jamestown catcher Quinn Irey’s time with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks lasted until June 30, when the club released him following the return of catcher Charlie Valerio from the disabled list. Irey hit .182 in 11 at-bats with a stolen base over six games.

The RedHawks signed Irey on June 16, and the Bismarck native made his debut later that evening.

“They (the RedHawks) did not mention they would bring me back when I was released,” said Irey, “but they did mention they would stay in touch and keep tabs on me to see if I would go anywhere else this summer.”

However, Irey did not stay unemployed long. A rash of injuries left the Cleburne Railroaders without a healthy catcher, and on July 1 the Texas club, also of the American Association, signed Irey and immediately inserted him in the lineup as the everyday backstop.

Irey caught all 14 innings of Cleburne’s 4-3 win over Chicago on July 15, and after the game, found out he was heading back to the RedHawks in a trade for a player to be named. The Railroaders handed him his flight itinerary and he left for Dallas-Fort Worth airport the next morning.

Back in Fargo, Irey continues to learn the ins and outs of the catching position from assistant coach Chris Coste, whose 12 years of professional baseball included a World Series championship with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008.

UNDATED (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers say they have signed first-round draft pick Mike McGlinchey to a four-year deal.

The 6-foot-8, 315-pound McGlinchey was the consensus top tackle available in the draft before the Niners took him with the ninth pick. He played both tackle positions at Notre Dame before settling in at left tackle as a junior.

McGlinchey will most likely play on the right side in the NFL since San Francisco already has six-time Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Staley, who is the longest-tenured player on the 49ers.

Also around the NFL:

SWIMMING-LOCHTE SUSPENDED

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Swimmer Ryan Lochte (LAHK’-tee) has been suspended until next July by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for getting an intravenous infusion, a method that broke anti-doping rules.

U.S. officials say the 12-time Olympic medalist was not using a banned substance. But under anti-doping rules, athletes typically cannot receive IVs unless related to a hospitalization or through an exemption.

Lochte posted a photo of himself getting the IV in May and that image prompted the investigation.

It’s his second suspension since the Rio Olympics. He was banned for 10 months after claiming he and three other U.S. swimmers were robbed at gunpoint at those 2016 Games, a tale that quickly unraveled.
