Jamestown (CSi) — Golfers and golf enthusiasts are making cancer care in Jamestown a hole in one.
JRMC Foundation Director, Lida Jackson says, “More than 100 golfers helped raise $28,000 at the Golf FORE Good event on July 20. The proceeds support the construction of the JRMC Cancer Center. I’m always impressed with the golfers and their generosity. And we appreciate the support of the businesses and sponsors who make this possible. When we drive around the course that day and see the sponsor signs we can ‘feel’ the support for our patients.”
Cancer is the leading cause of death of Stutsman County residents ages 45-84. And in a 60-mile radius of Jamestown, 252 people are diagnosed or die from cancer each year. Currently, these residents travel more than 100 miles for chemotherapy and radiation. A cancer center at JRMC would change that, Jackson said.
In addition to raising money for the JRMC Cancer Center, golfers also raised nearly $300 for the Continue Aiding Recipients Affected by Cancer Evermore (C.A.R.E.) Endowment Fund. The CARE fund, established by Barb and Curt Togstad, provides gas cards to patients at JRMC.
“Golf “FORE” Good is always a great time for a great cause. We have fun, however, we also remember the people who need our help and have touched our hearts,” Jackson said.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota nurse staffing agency has settled a federal lawsuit over wage disputes with more than 100 nurses.
Employees of Mandan-based Dakota Travel Nurse have started receiving cash payments after settling the lawsuit, The Bismarck Tribune reported . The settlement is sealed so details of the amount of compensation aren’t publicly available.
The nurses alleged they weren’t properly compensated for overtime under state law and were overcharged for company-provided lodging.
“As a local company, I think there needs to be exposure of (Dakota Travel Nurse’s) unfair business practices,” said Boe Kuch, who worked as a registered nurse for the company for 18 months.
The company helps staff 90 health care facilities in North Dakota, Montana and South Dakota. Company Owner Jamie Fleck’s lawyer declined to comment to the newspaper.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota prosecutor says he won’t charge two police officers in the fatal shooting of a black man last month.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman says 31-year-old Thurman Blevins fled from officers with a loaded handgun and refused to follow commands to stop and show his hands. Freeman said Blevins turned toward the officers with the gun in his hand before he was shot on June 23.
Freeman says there’s no basis for criminal charges against the officers. He says Blevins was a danger to them and to the community.
The officers were responding to a 911 call of a man firing a gun into the air and into the ground on the city’s north side.
Freeman made his announcement via news release after he was shouted down by community members at a news conference.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — More than $500 million in claims have been approved under the NFL’s concussion settlement in less than two years, nearly a decade earlier than league officials estimated they would reach that amount.
Claims administrators in the settlement said Monday that $502 million had been approved. The original actuarial estimates from the NFL estimated a little more than $400 million would be paid out in the first decade.
Attorneys for the retired players adjusted their estimates on the total payout of expected claims earlier this month, saying the settlement would likely reach $1.4 billion— almost a half billion more than the NFL originally estimated.
Almost 2,000 claims have been filed in less than two years.

REDDING, Calif. (AP) — Derick Hughes II remained at his property in Nice (nees), California, despite mandatory evacuation orders prompted by a wildfire threatening the area.
Hughes said Monday that he is using sprinklers on wet his roof and removing yard plants that could catch fire.
The 32-year-old Marine Corps veteran says he sent his wife and two daughters to safety Sunday along with three carloads of belongings.
Hughes says he and about five of his neighbors chose to protect their homes against fire and looters, despite an evacuation text alert they got Sunday evening.
Lake County officials said Monday about 14,000 people are under evacuation orders. Another 1,000 have been displaced in neighboring Mendocino County.
Two blazes are encroaching on several towns that surround Clear Lake.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he would “certainly meet” with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani (hah-SAHN’ roh-HAH’-nee) if the Iranian leader was willing, adding he would do it with “no preconditions.”
Trump says during a joint news conference with Italy’s leader that he believes in meetings and is pointing to the benefits of recent meetings with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
The Trump administration withdrew from the landmark nuclear accord with Iran in May, saying it was too generous to Iran. The United States has vowed to boost sanctions until Iran changes its regional policies, including its support for regional militant groups.
NEW YORK (AP) — Les Moonves’ wife, Julie Chen, is staying mum about the sexual harassment allegations against her husband.
On Monday’s episode of her daytime CBS chat show, “The Talk,” she said she will not discuss the issue on the air. Chen says she has already made one statement on the matter and she will “stand by that statement today, tomorrow, forever.”
On Friday, she tweeted that she “fully supported” Moonves, calling him a “kind, decent and moral human being.”
Chen and Moonves have been married for almost 14 years and are the parents of a son, Charlie. She is a former CBS news anchor who also hosts the “Big Brother” reality show.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Most young Americans have a dim outlook on both the state of the country and the upcoming midterm elections in general, but a poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows signs of optimism among those ages 15 to 34 that their generation can make a difference.
A majority of young adults think voting in the midterm elections gives their generation some say about how the government is run, and most think their generation is motivated to make positive change.
Only about a third say they’re certain to vote. But if they do turn out, it’s Democrats that are poised to benefit in the midterm elections. President Donald Trump and the Republicans are defending their congressional majorities and historically the party out of power gains seats.
