Jamestown (CSi) — Golfers and golf enthusiasts are making cancer care in Jamestown a hole in one.

JRMC Foundation Director, Lida Jackson says, “More than 100 golfers helped raise $28,000 at the Golf FORE Good event on July 20. The proceeds support the construction of the JRMC Cancer Center.  I’m always impressed with the golfers and their generosity. And we appreciate the support of the businesses and sponsors who make this possible. When we drive around the course that day and see the sponsor signs we can ‘feel’ the support for our patients.”

Cancer is the leading cause of death of Stutsman County residents ages 45-84. And in a 60-mile radius of Jamestown, 252 people are diagnosed or die from cancer each year. Currently, these residents travel more than 100 miles for chemotherapy and radiation. A cancer center at JRMC would change that, Jackson said.

In addition to raising money for the JRMC Cancer Center, golfers also raised nearly $300 for the Continue Aiding Recipients Affected by Cancer Evermore (C.A.R.E.) Endowment Fund. The CARE fund, established by Barb and Curt Togstad, provides gas cards to patients at JRMC.

“Golf “FORE” Good is always a great time for a great cause. We have fun, however, we also remember the people who need our help and have touched our hearts,” Jackson said.

FORT RICE, N.D. (AP) — A small plane that crashed in a North Dakota river and killed the Pennsylvania pilot didn’t appear to have any mechanical problems.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board indicates no pre-impact plane malfunctions or failures. The investigation into the cause will take several more months.

Thirty-five-year-old Daniel Miller, of Pittsburgh, died July 17 when the Cessna 152 crashed into the Missouri River near Fort Rice while he was taking low-altitude photographs. The flight originated from the airport in Mandan.

The NTSB says the plane is registered to a company in Watertown, South Dakota, that leased it to an aerial photography business in that city that specializes in farm and ranch photography.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Supreme Court on Monday rejected several of Gov. Doug Burgum’s vetoes but sided with the governor in other portions of a dispute with the Legislature that revolved around overreach on both sides.

The high court ruled that Burgum was out of line in four out of five line-item vetoes that the Legislature had challenged. In the vetoes — which included appropriations for the State Water Commission and for information technology spending, among others — the Supreme Court said Burgum had gone too far with vetoes that would have changed legislators’ intent.

The Supreme Court sided with Burgum’s challenge that lawmakers had improperly delegated authority to a subset of legislators — known as the Budget Section — for how some $299 million for the Water Commission could be shifted among several identified needs.

Burgum made the same successful argument for the Legislature’s attempt to have the budget section direct where half of $3.6 million appropriated for information technology would be spent.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck man accused in a fatal shooting that police say resulted from an argument over a money debt has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.Thirty-five-year-old Aundra Fontenot is accused of shooting Derrick Left Hand in the chest with a handgun and killing him on June 14.Fontenot on Monday also pleaded not guilty to a weapons charge. His trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 7. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted on both charges.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Oil and Gas Division is monitoring cleanup of a saltwater spill at a well site in Golden Valley County.Saltwater is a byproduct of oil production. Officials say Foundation Energy Management reported that about 21,000 gallons spilled Sunday at a well site about 11 miles north of Beach due to a pump leak. The spill was contained on site. A state inspector has been to the scene.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota State Fair fell just short of setting an all-time attendance record.

Officials say the nine-day event drew 318,348 people, the second-highest total in the 53 years of the fair. The record was set in 2013, when 320,486 people went through the gates.

This year’s fair also had the second-highest one-day total on record, when 51,972 people showed up on Saturday.

Nickelback drew the most people of any concert, playing to a sold-out crowd of more than 16,600 fans.

Event manager Renae Korslein attributed the h

igh numbers to good weather and the quality of free stage entertainment.

In sports…

ST.LOUIS (AP) — Defending national champion North Dakota State has been unanimously picked to win the Missouri Valley Football Conference title. The FCS powerhouse, which has won or shared the league crown in each of the last seven seasons, received all 39 first-place votes in a poll conducted by league coaches, media and sports information directors.South Dakota State was picked second, followed by Northern Iowa, Youngstown State and Illinois State.MVFC teams went 8-4 in last year’s FCS playoffs, and North Dakota State won its sixth national title since 2011.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Game and Fish Department is urging anglers to keep fish caught in Lake Sakakawea from depths of more than 25 feet. The Missouri River reservoir is particularly full this summer because of a large amount of runoff in the basin.Scott Gangl with Game and Fish says fish reeled in from deep water likely will die if released because of the extreme change in water pressure.Gangl also says that as water in Lake Sakakawea warms during this time of the summer, fish tend to move to deeper, cooler water. That’s particularly true for walleye.Anglers who want to practice catch-and-release are encouraged to fish in shallower water.

Bismarck (CSi)   – Game and Fish reports that North Dakota’s early Canada goose dates are set, and bag limits and licensing requirements are the same as last year.

However, one major change from last year is that the state Game and Fish Department has restructured the Canada goose hunting zones.

Migratory game bird management supervisor Mike Szymanski said the new structure addresses depredation issues and provides additional hunting opportunities.

“Basically, our worst Canada goose-landowner conflicts are in the eastern half of the state and getting those extra days back in September gets some more harvest pressure on those birds,” Szymanski said.

Canada goose hunting is divided into three zones – Missouri River, western and eastern. The Missouri River Canada goose zone has the same boundary as last year, while the western zone has the same boundary as the high plains duck unit, excluding the Missouri River zone. The eastern zone has the same boundary as the low plains duck unit.

Opening day for early Canada goose is Aug. 15 in all three zones. Closing dates are Sept. 7 in the Missouri River zone, Sept. 15 in the western zone and Sept. 21 in the eastern zone.

OTHER MLB TRADES…

UNDATED (AP) — The Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners reshaped their bullpens Monday as they battle for first place in the American League West.

The Astros have acquired veteran closer Roberto Osuna from the Blue Jays for reliever Ken Giles and two pitching prospects. The 23-year-old Osuna is eligible to pitch in the major leagues starting Sunday after a 75-game suspension under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy. He was an All-Star last year, when he went 3-4 with 39 saves and a 3.38 ERA.

Houston sent right-handers David Paulino and Hector Perez to Toronto as part of the deal, a day before the non-waiver trade deadline.

— The Red Sox have acquired Ian Kinsler from the Angels to fill in for injured second baseman Dustin Pedroia. Boston is sending Triple-A pitchers Ty Buttrey and Williams Jerez to Los Angeles, while the Angels are parting with cash in the deal. The 36-year-old Kinsler is batting .239 with 13 homers and 32 RBIs for the Angels this season.

— The Braves have acquired outfielder Adam Duvall from the Reds for right-handers Lucas Sims and Matt Wisler, along with outfielder Preston Tucker. All three spent time in Atlanta this season but were with Triple-A Gwinnett at the time of the trade. The 29-year-old Duvall has hit 15 home runs with 61 RBIs but is hitting only .205 this season.

— The Dodgers have placed All-Star right-hander Ross Stripling on the 10-day disabled list with right first toe inflammation. Stripling is 8-3 with a 2.68 ERA and earned his All-Star spot after moving to the rotation in early May. However, he has a 4.73 ERA over five July starts, giving up six of his 15 home runs this season in that span.

— Braves pitcher Sean Newcomb and Nationals shortstop Trea Turner are facing the fallout from their tweets, a day after they apologized for offensive posts from 2011 and 2012. Major League Baseball recently dealt with a similar situation involving Milwaukee reliever Josh Hader on the night he pitched in the All-Star Game. MLB has said it will determine a course of diversity training for Newcomb.

NFL-NEWS

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Jets finally have Sam Darnold under contract.

The third overall pick in this year’s NFL draft has ended his three-day holdout and signed a four-year, $30.25 million package. Just after signing, Darnold made his way out to the practice field with his teammates greeting him with a “Rudy”-like slow-clap.

Darnold was the second quarterback taken in the draft after playing two seasons at Southern Cal. He completed 65 percent of his 846 passes for 7,279 yards, 57 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

The 21-year-old is expected to compete with McCown and Teddy Bridgewater for the Jets’ starting job.

The contract makes Chicago linebacker Roquan Smith the only unsigned player from the April draft.

— The Panthers suffered their second significant training camp injury in three days when cornerback Ross Cockrell was carted off the field Monday with a broken left tibia and fibula while breaking up a pass in the end zone. The team said Cockrell will need surgery, but has not said if he is expected to miss the remainder of the season. Carolina lost starting right tackle Daryl Williams on Saturday to a dislocated patella and torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee on Friday.

— Packers inside linebacker Jake Ryan was carted off the field late in practice with an apparent right leg injury. Green Bay also finished practice without Kentrell Brice, who was carted off the field during a special teams drill because of an undetermined injury.

— More than $500 million in claims have been approved under the NFL’s concussion settlement in less than two years, nearly a decade earlier than league officials estimated they would reach that amount. The original actuarial estimates from the NFL estimated a little more than $400 million would be paid out in the first decade. Attorneys for the retired players adjusted their estimates on the total payout of expected claims earlier this month, saying the settlement would likely reach $1.4 billion— almost a half billion more than the NFL originally estimated.

NBA-NEWS…

UNDATED (AP) — Carmelo Anthony is a free agent after being waived by the Atlanta Hawks, a move that was expected when the 10-time All-Star was traded from Oklahoma City on July 19.

The 34-year-old Anthony averaged a career-low 16.2 points with the Thunder last season before being acquired by the Hawks for a protected 2022 first-round draft pick from Oklahoma City and Justin Anderson from Philadelphia.

The 10-time All-Star is 22nd on the NBA’s all-time list with 25,417 points.

Heat guard Dwyane (dwayn) Wade wouldn’t say Monday if he has decided whether to play this season, which would be his 16th in the NBA. His future has been the source of much speculation for several weeks, with retirement a possibility. Heat President Pat Riley said last week the team will be patient while awaiting Wade’s decision, with the hope of an answer by mid-August.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Prosecutors have lined up 35 witnesses and more than 500 pieces of evidence in the federal trial of Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who’s accused of tax evasion and bank fraud. The trial will center on Manafort’s Ukrainian consulting work and only briefly touch on his involvement with the president’s campaign. Jury selection begins Tuesday in Alexandria, Virginia.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Border Patrol and other agencies will come before the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday to answer questions about the Trump administration’s separation of migrant children from their families and its struggle to reunite them. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Generals from the rival Koreas are meeting at their shared border for talks on easing their countries’ decades-long military standoff, the second such meeting since their leaders held a summit in April and pledged to reduce the danger of war.
