Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown City Fire Department was called to an apartment unit at Gardenette Drive in Jamestown just after 10:30-a.m. Wednesday.

The caller stated that she left a range burner on and when she returned, the unit contained smoke.

Jamestown City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says no fire was discovered as the city fire department extracted light smoke from the building.  Light smoke damage to the unit, no other units affected, and no injuries reported.

The cause was unattended cooking.

Four city fire units and 19 fire fighters were on the scene until 10:57 a.m.

 

 

Jamestown  (CSi)  In Southeast District Court in Jamestown Wednesday, bond  for 47 year old Betty Jo Krenz of Woodworth was set at $10,000 cash, by Judge Cherie Clark.

A condition of the bond is Krenz  is not leave the state of North Dakota.

She told the court she hoped to return to Hawaii.

Krenz is accused in connection with an alleged adoption scam,  of theft by deception of more than $1,000 but less than $10,000.  She is also accused of using personal identifying information of another person to make or attempt to make purchases of less than $1,000 and theft of one of more cans of pepper spray.

Families say Krenz used her background as a Spirit Lake social worker to produce fake adoption papers. Court documents show Krenz told one mom she was heavily involved in the Savanna Greywind case and expected to get custody of Greywind’s child.

In April this year, an arrest warrant was issued for Krenz  who told the court she had been working in Hawaii and could not take vacation until now to turn herself in.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The brother of a New Town woman missing since last fall confirms it was his sister’s body that was found in a pickup truck pulled from a lake on the Fort Berthold Reservation earlier this week.

Matthew Lone Bear tells the Bismarck Tribune that Olivia Lone Bear was identified by her tattoos. The truck was recovered from Lake Sakakawea on Tuesday. A volunteer group began searching the lake with sonar on July 25 and found what members believed was a submerged truck.

Volunteer Melaine Stoneman says divers worked to recover the truck, submerged about 30 feet deep and roughly 150 to 200 feet from shore.

The 32-year-old mother of five was last seen Oct. 25, 2017 driving in a pickup in New Town. The FBI is investigating.

 

ROLETTE, N.D. (AP) — A Rolette man charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting at police during an 8-hour standoff in the town is now accused of killing another man before the standoff.Forty-nine-year-old Ronald Wootan was charged with murder Wednesday in the shooting death Tuesday of James Pochant. Details weren’t immediately available. Wootan’s bond was set at $1 million. His attorney didn’t immediately comment.Wootan also faces felony charges of attempted murder, terrorizing, reckless endangerment and preventing arrest in the Tuesday standoff in which police allege he shot at officers and hit a SWAT vehicle. No one was hurt. Wootan was arrested when he left the house to try to get to a vehicle.About 30 officers from the Highway Patrol, Border Patrol, a SWAT team and area police departments responded to the scene.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota U.S. Sens. John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp have been named to the farm bill conference committee.Hoeven, a Republican, and Heitkamp, a Democrat, were among nine senators appointed to work out a compromise among House and Senate versions of the 2018 farm bill. Both senators are members of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and Hoeven chairs the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee.In a statement, Hoeven says conferees will work to ensure the final farm bill includes strong crop insurance, strong support for agriculture research and greater access to capital.Heitkamp says it’s critical that Congress passes a “bipartisan, common sense” farm bill before the current bill expires at the end of September.Republican U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota was earlier named as a House conferee.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — U.S. Sen. John Hoeven says he will support President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

The North Dakota Republican issued his statement after meeting with Kavanaugh on Wednesday and discussing his judicial philosophy.

Hoeven cited Kavanaugh’s experience on the bench and what the senator said was his “strong record of upholding the law rather than legislating from the bench.”

Hoeven says Kavanaugh has a deep respect for the Constitution and calls him “a solid choice” for the Supreme Court.

 

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The spring wheat harvest is getting underway in North Dakota.The federal Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that 1 percent of the state’s staple crop is in the bin, on pace with the long-term average. Eighty-seven percent of the crop is rated in good or excellent condition.The majority of most crops in North Dakota remain rated in good condition, with 78 percent of the sugar beet crop rated as excellent.Seventy-seven percent of subsoil moisture supplies and 78 percent of topsoil moistures supplies statewide are rated adequate to surplus.Stockwater supplies are rated 87 percent in those categories, and pastures are rated 69 percent in good to excellent condition.

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Navy’s USS North Dakota submarine has been certified for overseas deployment.

Gov. Doug Burgum says the Navy informed him the submarine left its homeport in Groton, Connecticut on Tuesday. The vessel is scheduled to return in January.

The $2.6 billion, 377-foot-long submarine is able to launch cruise missiles, deliver special forces and carry out surveillance.

It is the first Navy vessel to carry the name North Dakota in a century. It was commissioned in 2014.

 

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Country stars Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts will headline the 2019 North Dakota State Fair.

Minot Mayor Shaun Sipma announced the acts at a Friday night concert at this year’s fair in Minot, and fair management has confirmed the concerts.

This year’s State Fair concluded over the weekend. The nine-day event drew 318,348 people, the second-highest total in the 53 years of the fair.

The 2019 fair will run from July 19-27.

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A Minot man has pleaded guilty to having too many snakes.

Vincent Fugeman was cited in February for having five snakes in his home. A city ordinance approved earlier this year allows a maximum of four.

The Minot Daily News reports that Fugeman pleaded guilty in municipal court on Wednesday and was ordered to pay $225 in fines and fees.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown Parks and Recreation will hold the Pipestem Creek Trail run/walk on Saturday, August 18, followed by the Gear Grinder mountain bike race the next day.

Registration for the run/walk begins at 8 a.m. with the race starting an hour later.

Sunday’s registration starts at 8:45 a.m. with the race beginning 45 minutes later. For both events there will be a youth, male and female division.

UNDATED (AP) — The Indians have pushed their lead in the AL Central to 10 games by blanking the second-place Twins, 2-0 in Minnesota. Carlos Carrasco won his fifth straight decision by striking out 10 and limiting the Twins to four hits over 7 1/3 innings. Brad Hand recorded the final five outs for the Indians, who have allowed just 13 runs over their last six games.

 

It was a tough afternoon for the Seattle Mariners, who dropped another game in the AL West standings yesterday and lost possession of the second wild-card spot.

Marwin Gonzalez belted a pair of solo homers and Max Stassi added a three-run blast as the Houston Astros hammered the Mariners, 8-3 in Seattle. Jake Marisnick hit a two-run blast, to support Dallas Keuchel (KY’-kul), who gave up three runs over seven innings to even his record at 9-9.

Wade LeBlanc surrendered three round-trippers and seven runs as the Mariners fell five games behind the AL West-leading Astros.

Seattle has dropped 10 of its last 15 games.

The Athletics have pulled into a tie with Seattle for the final AL wild-card berth by completing a season sweep of Toronto, 8-3. Jonathan Lucroy (LOO’-kroy) had three hits and four RBIs and Franklin Barretto was 3-for-4 with a two-run double and a solo homer.

Sean Manaea (mah-NY’-ah) was limited the Blue Jays to a run and five hits over six-plus innings to help the A’s win for the 30th time in their last 40 games.

— Trey Mancini was 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBIs as the Baltimore Orioles topped the New York Yankees, 7-5. Renato Nunez also had three hits and two RBIs for the Birds, who led 7-1 in the third inning and evened their season series with the Yanks at six games apiece. Sonny Gray was chased in the third inning as the Yankees fell 5 ½ games behind the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox.

— Cole Hamels won his Cubs debut and Willson Contreras went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs in a 9-2 thrashing of the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Hamels struck out nine while holding the Bucs to an unearned run and three hits over five innings. Ben Zobrist (ZOH’-brihst) and Jason Heyward also had three of Chicago’s 15 hits.

— Chicago reclaimed first place in the NL Central when Yasmani Grandal (grahn-DAHL’) belted a two-run, walk-off home run in the 10th inning to send the Dodgers past the Brewers, 6-4. Grandal also homered in the fifth inning, one batter before Brian Dozier provided his first round-tripper since coming to Los Angeles. The Brewers now sit one game behind Chicago, while the Dodgers are in a first-place tie with Arizona in the NL West.

— The Cardinals’ bullpen threw shutout ball over 6 1/3 innings of a 6-3 victory against Colorado. Yadier (YAH’-dee-ehr) Molina drove in two runs and was one of three Redbirds with three hits. Nolan Arenado collected his 80th RBI for the Rockies, who are one game off the NL West lead.

— Tommy Milone picked up his first major league win in 15 ½ months and Anthony Rendon (rehn-DOHN’) slammed a two-run homer off Noah Syndergaard (SIHN’-dur-gahrd) as the Nationals beat the Mets, 5-3 to complete a two-game sweep. Milone struck out nine and allowed a run and three hits over seven innings to help the Nats climb back over .500. Jose Reyes homered from both sides of the plate for New York, which was outscored 30-7 in the two-game set.

— Jake Bauers smacked a two-run homer and Willy Adames (ah-DAH’-mehs) added a solo shot and an RBI single in the Rays’ 7-2 win against the Angels. Mallex Smith lined a go-ahead triple to cap Tampa Bay’s three-run fourth after Los Angeles grabbed a 2-0 lead. Winning pitcher Jake Faria worked 3 2/3 innings of one-run relief.

— Jose Iglesias collected three RBIs and Jim Adduci hit a solo homer while the Tigers were building a 6-0 lead in a 7-4 downing of the Reds. Detroit finished the game without starting pitcher Mike Fiers (FY’-urz), who suffered a bruised left shin from a comebacker off the bat of Mason Williams. X-rays were negative, but it was unclear whether Fiers will make his next scheduled start.

— Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer and drove in four in leading the Royals’ 10-5 rout of the White Sox. Jakob Junis pitched 5 2/3 innings of four-run ball in his first win since May 18. Yoan Moncada broke out of a slump with his fifth career leadoff homer, two hits and two walks, but he also committed one of two costly errors for the White Sox.

— The Braves and Marlins were rained out in Atlanta, leading to a split doubleheader on Aug. 13. The postponement keeps the Braves a half-game behind the NL East-leading Phillies, who were idle.

UNDATED (AP) — Shawn Kelley’s outburst on the mound got him booted from the Nationals. The reliever has been designated for assignment, a day after he threw his glove to the ground and glared into the dugout while working the ninth inning of a 25-4 blowout of the Mets.

Manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo say Kelley’s actions were disrespectful and unprofessional.

Washington recalled right-hander Jimmy Cordero from Triple-A Syracuse to take Kelley’s place on the roster.

In other baseball news:

— Mets left-hander Steven Matz will be evaluated by doctors after experiencing forearm discomfort. Manager Mickey Callaway says Matz reported the pain after he failed to get out of the first inning in Tuesday night’s 25-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. Matz threw 32 pitches, faced 11 batters and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Callaway says the 27-year-old was experiencing tightness and a “dead arm.”

—Slick fielding shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria (ah-DAY’-nee eh-cheh-vah-REE’-ah) has been designated for assignment by the Rays to open a roster spot for outfielder Tommy Pham. The 29-year-old infielder was hitting .258 with three homers and 26 RBIs, and he had lost his starting role to rookie Willy Adames (ah-DAH’-mehs). Tampa Bay has seven days to trade or release Hechavarria, who had beaten the Rays in salary arbitration last winter.

— A lawyer for former Blue Jays pitcher Roberto Osuna says his client will plead not guilty to an assault charge. Osuna was suspended for 75 games for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy and was traded to the Houston Astros.

— After a historic drop during the season’s first three months that concerned the sport’s leadership, the big league batting average in July was .255, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. It raised the season average two points to .248, but still on pace for the lowest combined total since 1972. Hits outnumbered strikeouts for just the second month this year.

Eagles hold back Carson Wentz for 3rd straight practice

UNDATED (AP) — Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz didn’t participate in 11-on-11 drills for the third straight practice for precautionary reasons after taking part the first three days.

Coach Doug Pederson emphasized that Wentz hasn’t suffered any setbacks. He says he’s encouraged by Wentz’s recovery from surgery to repair a torn left ACL last December. Wentz again was on the field for the 7-on-7 portion of practice.

 

In other NFL news:

— Colts offensive lineman Jack Mewhort unexpectedly has announced his retirement following a morning practice at training camp. His once-promising career got derailed by a series of injuries that kept him out of 11 of the Colts’ last 20 games.

—The Cowboys have activated defensive end Randy Gregory after a year away from football on a substance-abuse suspension. Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated him not long before the Cowboys reported to training camp. The 25-year-old former Nebraska star participated in a walkthrough practice for the first time Wednesday.

— The Seahawks added depth to their offensive line by signing J.R. Sweezy. The veteran guard rose to prominence during his first four seasons in the league playing for the Seahawks. He signed with Tampa Bay prior to the 2016 season and started 14 games last year but finished that season on injured reserve with a leg injury.

— Veteran receivers Brandon Tate and Michael Floyd have joined the New Orleans Saints. Saints coach Sean Payton says he is also eager to try Tate as a kick and punt returner. New Orleans also has activated tight end Michael Hoomanawanui, who began training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

— Browns starting guard Joel Bitonio is sliding over to left tackle. Bitonio will replace 10-time Pro Bowler Joe Thomas, who retired after last season.

— Jets linebacker Dylan Donahue has pleaded guilty to DWI charges in connection with a wrong-way crash in the Lincoln Tunnel last February. Three other charges were dropped as part of a plea deal, but he will have to drive with an ignition interlock device for a year after his license is reinstated.

 

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

UNDATED (AP) — Ohio State has placed coach Urban Meyer on paid administrative leave while it investigates claims that his wife knew about allegations of abuse against an assistant coach years before he was fired last week.

Courtney Smith gave an interview to Stadium and provided text messages to former ESPN reporter Brett McMurphy between her and Shelley Meyer in 2015 and with the wives of other Buckeyes coaches. Smith also provided threatening texts she claims came from her ex-husband, former assistant Zach Smith.

Zach Smith was fired last week after an Ohio court granted a domestic violence protective order to Courtney Smith.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Day will serve as acting head coach for the Buckeyes.

Coyotes to retire Shane Doan’s number in February

UNDATED (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes will retire former captain Shane Doan’s number during a pregame ceremony on Feb. 24.

Doan will have his No. 19 retired before the Coyotes face the Winnipeg Jets, joining former Arizona players Keith Tkachuk (kah-CHUHK’), Jeremy Roenick (ROH’-nihk) and Teppo Numminen (THE’-poh NOO’-mih-nehn) in the franchise’s ring of honor. Former Winnipeg players Bobby Hull, Thomas Steen and Dale Hawerchuk also are in the Coyotes’ ring of honor.

Doan spent his entire 21-year career with the Coyotes before retiring prior to last season.

ANNES, England (AP) — Michelle Wie has withdrawn from the Women’s British Open midway through her first round because of a hand injury.The American golfer was 7 over after 12 holes at Royal Lytham on Thursday when she quit.Wie, who is ranked No. 18, says in a post on Twitter she “gave it all” but “couldn’t handle the pain any longer.”Wie said she has been playing through pain all year, and that she would be taking some time off so her hand could fully recover.

UPPER LAKE, Calif. (AP) — Wildfires scorching Northern California from the Gold Country to the fringes of Yosemite National Park are also burning through the state’s firefighting budget. State fire spokesman Mike Mohler says California already has spent more than a quarter of its annual fire budget _ at least $125 million _ just a month into the budget year.

 

NEW YORK (AP) — A prominent political donor has helped pornographers, payday loan debt collectors and offshore gambling operations get past the banking system’s gates. That’s according to internal records from an online payment processing firm obtained by The Associated Press. Allied Wallet and its executives have given $6 million in contributions since late 2015 to Democrats and Republicans. The records show the company used fake websites and foreign dummy corporations to mask some customers’ true businesses.

 

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has changed church teaching about the death penalty, saying in a new policy published Thursday that it is always “inadmissible” because it “attacks” the inherent dignity of all humans. The Vatican said Francis had approved a change to the Catechism of the Catholic Church _ the compilation of official Catholic Church teaching which had previously said recourse to capital punishment was possible if it was the only way to defend the common good.

 

BEIRUT (AP) — The Israeli military says it targeted and killed seven “armed terror operatives” who had crossed into Israeli territory in the southern Golan Heights. Military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said on Thursday that Israel tracked the armed persons approaching the border on Wednesday night and a military aircraft struck as they attempted to cross a security fence on the Israeli size of the frontier.

 

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Human rights activists in Zimbabwe are condemning the military crackdown on opposition protesters in the capital, saying it raises questions about whether the current government is any different from that of former leader Robert Mugabe. The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum says its member groups saw soldiers firing “randomly” in downtown Harare and beating up bystanders who were not involved in the protests on Wednesday. Three people were killed in the election-related violence.
