BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Former U.S attorney and lieutenant governor Drew Wrigley has been nominated by President Donald Trump for the state’s top federal prosecutor job.
Republican Sen. John Hoeven made the announcement Thursday. Wrigley still must be confirmed by the Senate.
Current U.S. Attorney Chris Myers of North Dakota had removed himself from consideration.
Wrigley was U.S. attorney from 2001 to 2009. He was lieutenant governor from 2010 to 2016 under then GOP Gov. Jack Dalrymple. Wrigley is now senior management adviser for Sanford Health.
Wrigley’s most high-profile case as U.S. attorney was the conviction of Alfonso Rodriguez Jr., who was sentenced to death for killing University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin (SHUH’-deen).
Wrigley is an alumnus of the University of North Dakota and the American University law school in Washington.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Health Department hopes to have medical marijuana available by the end of the year in at least the state’s two largest cities.
Medical Marijuana Division Director Jason Wahl says dispensaries in Fargo and Bismarck potentially could be operating by the end of the year. But it isn’t known yet if manufacturing facilities in those two cities will have product available by then.
The department expects to begin accepting applications from patients and doctors in late October.
The agency hopes to have all eight dispensaries operating by next July. Applications for dispensaries in Grand Forks and Williston are likely to be accepted next month. Applications for dispensaries in Devils Lake, Dickinson, Jamestown and Minot are likely to be accepted in January.
State voters approved medical marijuana in November 2016.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s oil production in June slid slightly from a record set the month prior due to drillers scaling back to keep natural gas flaring from exceeding state limits.
The Bismarck Tribune reports the state produced an average of nearly 1.23 million barrels of oil daily in June, down from the May record of nearly 1.25 million barrels.
Department of Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms says operators voluntarily restricted oil production to stay in compliance with the gas capture policy, which calls for companies to capture 85 percent of natural gas.
Natural gas production decreased about 1 percent in June to an average of 2.3 billion cubic feet per day.
The June tallies are the latest figures available.

MLB-NEWS
UNDATED (AP) — Major League Baseball didn’t take too kindly to Jose Urena’s decision to drill Braves rookie Ronald Acuna (ah-KOON’-yuh) Jr. with a pitch on Wednesday.
The Marlins hurler has been given a six-game suspension for intentionally hitting Acuna leading off the bottom of the first in Atlanta’s 5-2 victory. Acuna had homered in five straight games and delivered leadoff home runs in each of the first three games of the series before he was nailed on the left elbow by Urena.
The Marlins pitcher denied any wrongdoing and said he was merely trying to throw inside, but MLB felt otherwise. Urena’s suspension will begin Friday unless he appeals.
Acuna had to leave the game one inning after getting hit, but he was in the lineup Thursday against the Rockies. The training staff signed off on Acuna returning to the lineup following X-rays and a CT scan.
Also around the majors:
— Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig (YAH’-see-ul pweeg) has received a two-game suspension and a fine for inciting a bench-clearing incident in Tuesday’s game against San Francisco. The fracas started when Puig swatted his bat in frustration after fouling off a pitch from Tony Watson in the seventh inning, prompting catcher Nick Hundley to say something to the slugger. Puig and Hundley argued face to face before the outfielder shoved the catcher twice.
— Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is still out of the lineup because of his troublesome left hamstring but still on the active roster. Beltre said before the Rangers’ game against the Angels that he is feeling better physically than he did when he strained the hamstring earlier this season.

NFL Preseason…
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady shook off the rust of a long layoff and then found time to shake hands with Nick Foles, six months after they met in the Super Bowl.
Brady moved the Patriots with ease in their rematch against the Eagles, with a little help from running back James White. Aaron Rodgers connected with tight end Jimmy Graham for an 8-yard score , and Tramon Williams had a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage of the Packers’ 51-34 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night.

MARYLAND-PLAYER DEATH REVIEW
The parents of offensive lineman Jordan McNair say suspended University of Maryland coach DJ Durkin should be fired.
McNair collapsed during a preseason conditioning drill May 29 and died two weeks later. Durkin was placed on administrative leave Saturday after ESPN reported that coaches had been bullying the players.
Martin McNair told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that Durkin “shouldn’t be able to work with anyone else’s kid.”
The university said Tuesday that it takes “legal and moral responsibility” for the death.
OHIO STATE-TEAM DOCTOR…
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Federal officials will investigate Ohio State University’s response to allegations against a team doctor now accused of sexual misconduct against scores of athletes and other male students in the 1980s and 1990s.
The school says the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights will investigate whether Ohio State has responded “promptly and equitably” to students’ complaints, including claims that school officials knew about misconduct by Dr. Richard Strauss but didn’t stop him.
The university’s chief compliance officer says it responded appropriately when allegations were made this year about Strauss, who killed himself in 2005.
DOCTOR-SEXUAL ABUSE…
UNDATED (AP) — Olympic gold-medal winning gymnasts Kyla Ross and Madison Kocian (KOH’-shin) say they are among the sexual abuse victims of disgraced former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.
Ross won gold with the “Fierce Five” at the 2012 Olympics, four years before Kocian captured gold. Ross tells The Associated Press the abuse began when she was 13 and continued throughout her career. Kocian says she was in denial for a long time but opted to come forward after watching so many of her former teammates detail their abuse at the hands of Nassar.
Nassar is serving an effective life sentence after being convicted of federal child pornography and state sexual abuse charges.
