MLB-NEWS

UNDATED (AP) — Major League Baseball didn’t take too kindly to Jose Urena’s decision to drill Braves rookie Ronald Acuna (ah-KOON’-yuh) Jr. with a pitch on Wednesday.

The Marlins hurler has been given a six-game suspension for intentionally hitting Acuna leading off the bottom of the first in Atlanta’s 5-2 victory. Acuna had homered in five straight games and delivered leadoff home runs in each of the first three games of the series before he was nailed on the left elbow by Urena.

The Marlins pitcher denied any wrongdoing and said he was merely trying to throw inside, but MLB felt otherwise. Urena’s suspension will begin Friday unless he appeals.

Acuna had to leave the game one inning after getting hit, but he was in the lineup Thursday against the Rockies. The training staff signed off on Acuna returning to the lineup following X-rays and a CT scan.

Also around the majors:

The fracas started when Puig swatted his bat in frustration after fouling off a pitch from Tony Watson in the seventh inning, prompting catcher Nick Hundley to say something to the slugger. Puig and Hundley argued face to face before the outfielder shoved the catcher twice.

— Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is still out of the lineup because of his troublesome left hamstring but still on the active roster. Beltre said before the Rangers’ game against the Angels that he is feeling better physically than he did when he strained the hamstring earlier this season.
