Jamestown (JRMC) — Miles matter when a person is sick. They also matter when a person is hungry. That’s why the JRMC Carrington Clinic hosted a Cook Out in August. More than 120 people attended the event, which celebrated the clinic’s one-year anniversary. As part of the cookout, guests could make a freewill donation to Carrington Daily Bread.
On Friday, Aug. 17, Dr. Michael T. Dean, JRMC Orthopedic Surgeon, delivered $888 to Anna Grenz who volunteers with Carrington Daily Bread.

In one year, the JRMC Carrington Clinic served about 300 people, saving them 24,000 miles of travel.
“As a rural hospital, we know how important healthy food and healthy bodies are,” said Trisha Jungels, JRMC Interim President & CEO. “Our vision is to be the best rural hospital in the country. We can do that by helping our communities through this donation and by offering specialty services in this area.”

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The family of a rural North Dakota horseman who died this month is raising money to maintain the herd of nearly 200 Nokota horses for which he cared.
WDAY-TV reported Sunday that Leo Kuntz’s family launched a GoFundMe page to raise $50,000 to care for the horses for up to a year while long-term arrangements are made. Kuntz founded the Nokota Horse Conservancy and coined the term for the breed.
The 69-year-old died on Aug. 12 after an accident on an all-terrain vehicle. He was the subject of a 2011 documentary called “NokotaHeart.”
One of Kuntz’s sisters, Felicia Rocholl, said he had only a small balance in his checking account and his family hasn’t found a savings account.
“Leo lived day by day and put all of his money in his horses,” Rocholl said.
Nokota horses were named the honorary state horse in 1993. Kuntz started buying the horses that were removed from Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the late 1970s. An estimated 750 Nokota horses live in the U.S. and Canada.
Rocholl said the family hopes to keep the herd largely intact.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A historical society has launched a $2 million fundraising campaign to move a museum off the North Dakota State Fairgrounds in Minot.
The Ward County Historical Society lost a court battle this month with the State Fair Association after a long-running dispute over the Pioneer Village museum, the Minot Daily News reported. The association has wanted the museum removed from the fairgrounds to make room for other plans, but the society has resisted because of a lack of funds.
Society President David Leite says he won’t appeal the decision to the state Supreme Court.
“We don’t have the money or the energy left to do an appeal is what the consensus of the organization is,” Leite said. “We want to move ahead in a positive fashion.”
The society hopes to raise the $2 million to pay for moving 12 historically significant buildings and its contents off the grounds. Leite said the move will be difficult and expensive.
“We have had a couple offers of some land,” he said. “We are still looking for a place that would be ideal for our uses … we’re hoping for a free offer of land.”
The timeline for moving is still undecided.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A man accused of fatally stabbing an acquaintance at a Bismarck apartment in 2016 has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The Bismarck Tribune reports 58-year-old Morris Pederson was sentenced Friday. Pederson entered an Alford plea to a murder charge. The plea is not an admission of guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence for a conviction.
Pederson is accused of killing Greg Comes at Patterson Place, an assisted living and low-income apartment building. Police say Pederson and Comes met at Ruth Meiers Hospitality House, a homeless shelter.
Police identified Pederson as a suspect after he walked from the apartment complex to the Burleigh County Courthouse in a blood-stained shirt and asked sheriff’s deputies to help Comes, who was dead.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a second defendant in a $1 billion racketeering lawsuit that the developer of the Dakota Access oil pipeline filed against environmental groups.
Judge Billy Roy Wilson ruled Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners failed to make a case that Earth First is an entity that can be sued.
The Center for Constitutional Rights had argued Earth First is a philosophy or movement similar to Black Lives Matter, and can’t be sued.
ETP sued Earth First, BankTrack and Greenpeace last August, alleging they worked to undermine the $3.8 billion pipeline that’s now moving North Dakota oil to Illinois.
Wilson in July ruled the company had no claim against BankTrack. The Dutch environmental group urged banks not to finance the pipeline. Wilson said that didn’t amount to radical ecoterrorism.

JAMESTOWN– (uj.edu)”Indescribable.”
Such were University of Jamestown quarterback Jordan Mann (JR/Bismarck, N.D.)’s feelings after Saturday’s 28-26 victory over Valley City State (N.D.) University at Rollie Greeno Field.
The win snapped the Jimmies’ eight-game losing streak to the rival Vikings in the storied Paint Bucket Series. In addition to defeating VCSU for the first time since 2013, UJ also ended a skid of six straight season-opening losses.
Mann scored from a yard out with 4:03 remaining, and following Kai Madela (FR/Henderson, Nev.)’s extra point, the Jimmies led 28-20. On VCSU’s ensuing possession, Louis Quinones capped off a 10 play, 66-yard drive with a one-yard scoring run of his own to cut the deficit to 28-26. With 43 seconds left, the Vikings’ two-point conversion attempt was thwarted by a strong Jimmie defensive effort, and a chance to send the game into overtime fell by the wayside.
Jamestown turned out 362 yards of total offense, including 231 on the ground. Jimmy Hatch (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) carried 16 times for 102 yards and a pair of scores while Allen Jevning (SO/Brainerd, Minn.) ran for 80 yards on 18 carries.
Mann completed 8 of 19 passes for 131 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown strike to Barry Williams, Jr. for the first UJ touchdown of the day. Williams finished with three catches for 77 yards. While many fans were remarking about Williams’ big play ability, Jimmie head coach Josh Kittell wasn’t surprised.
“I told Barry Williams everybody’s going to know (his) name after today,” Kittell said. “He made a heckuva grab, then made a few plays that led to the next touchdown. We’ve got some talent now; we’ve got a good group of young kids that are going to be household names for the next four years.”
Jake Peterson had a big day receiving for the visitors, pulling in 10 catches for 134 yards and a pair of scores. Following a three-and-out by the Jimmies to open the game, Peterson was on the other end of a 52-yard pass from Jalen Pfeifer on the Vikings’ first play from scrimmage that put VCSU ahead 7-0.
Pfeifer completed 21-of-33 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Quinones rushed for 87 yards on 25 carries.
Caleb Ellingson (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) had a huge day defensively for Jamestown, finishing with 16 tackles (8 solo), including 2 1/2 tackles for loss. Defensive linemen Andrew Jensen (SR/Gardnerville, Nev.) and Zach Phillips (SR/Greenfield, Ind.) both had six stops, while Aundre Purnell (SO/Garden Grove, Calif.), Jordan Olson (FR/Prior Lake, Minn.), and Morgan Borland (SR/Brownsville, Texas) all added five tackles a piece.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Burleigh County’s boat ramps are being examined after high water levels on the Missouri River left them inundated for most of the summer.
Bismarck Parks Operations Director David Mayer tells The Bismarck Tribune that the high water has receded enough for officials to look into how the ramps fared. He says the good news is they’re still usable.
The river was high through the summer due to a large amount of runoff in the river basin. Many boat ramps were closed or had restricted access.
The river in Bismarck peaked at 13.4 feet — about a foot below flood stage. Right now it’s at about 11 feet.
