Jamestown (KVLY) 25-year-old Justice Lange pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and to child neglect charges, both felonies, Wednesday morning in Stutsman County Court, before Judge Jay Schmitz in a case surrounding the death of her baby boy. She remains in custody at the Stutsman County Correctional Center.
The body of 4-month-old Tyr was found in early July in rural Stutsman County. Justice had been missing for four days and told police she couldn’t remember the last time she had her son.
KVLY reports, during the probable cause hearing, Wednesday, Stutsman County State’s Attorney Fritz Fremgen called Stutsman County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Falk to the stand. Falk was the lead detective on the case. He indicated Lange had last been seen on June 28 in Woodworth.
He said Lange told authorities she had taken meth earlier in the day before leaving Jamestown with the baby. He said she stopped in Woodworth because she was having car troubles. After leaving Woodworth, she was observed by farmers entering their property, but they didn’t see her leave and didn’t see the vehicle she was driving again.
On July 2, Lange was reported missing by her boyfriend. On July 6, Lange was found walking on a road in rural Stutsman County by a passing vehicle, according to Falk. She was taken to her grandparents home in Carrington, and then to the hospital. Falk said Lange told him she had injuries to her chest. Authorities began searching for the child, and with Lange’s help, were able to locate the slough where she said she had been staying with the baby. The child’s body was found on July 7.
Fremgen requested Lange be charged as a habitual offender, which would double the maximum sentence for each charge. The manslaughter charge would then carry a maximum sentence of 20 years, and the child neglect would carry a maximum sentence of 10 years.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Health Department has documented the state’s first case of measles in seven years.
Officials say the case was reported Tuesday, in a Burleigh County resident who the department says likely contracted the disease out of state.
The person has recovered and is no longer contagious but went to numerous spots in the Bismarck area while contagious. The Health Department is notifying people who were exposed.
The department says measles is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose and watery eyes, followed by a rash. All children are recommended to be vaccinated.
It’s the first measles case in North Dakota since 2011, when there was a documented case in Cass County.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is taking the Washington debate over his Supreme Court nominee to the home of two red-state Senate Democrats.
Trump’s trip to Montana and North Dakota this week is elevating Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation as a political litmus test for voters.
The president’s strategy aims to turn the screws on the lawmakers, Jon Tester of Montana and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, who find themselves caught between Senate leaders fighting Kavanaugh’s confirmation and their states’ more conservative electorate.
Neither senator has said how he or she will vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Senate Republican leaders hope to bring Kavanaugh’s confirmation to a vote before the full chamber this month.
Trump is holding a rally in Billings, Montana, on Thursday, spending the night and traveling to the Dakotas on Friday.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum says budget challenges still exist despite an uptick in the state’s economy led by near-record oil production.
State budget writers on Wednesday released an updated revenue forecast that shows oil and gas tax revenue exceeding expectations by more than $1.4 billion in the current two-year budget cycle.
The Republican governor says the state’s treasury is not as rosy as it seems.
North Dakota has balanced its budgets the past few years through cuts, layoffs and massive raids on state savings.
Burgum says the increased revenue still isn’t enough to make up for the fiscal gap from past budgets. He says he is sticking to his April directive that agencies slash budgets 5 percent to 10 percent.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The lone remaining environmental group facing racketeering accusations by the developer of the Dakota Access oil pipeline has asked a federal judge to be dismissed from the case.
Greenpeace attorneys say revised allegations by Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act are “generalized and implausible.”
ETP initially sued Greenpeace, Earth First and BankTrack last year for up to $1 billion, alleging they worked to undermine the $3.8 billion pipeline that’s now shipping North Dakota oil to a distribution point in Illinois.
A judge this summer dismissed BankTrack and Earth First, and ordered ETP to revise the lawsuit that he said contained vague claims. Company lawyers did so last month.
Greenpeace attorneys maintain the amended lawsuit “contains much the same inflammatory, insubstantial language” as before.
In sports…
Kansas City (uj.edu) – The University of Jamestown reports it will host the 2019 NAIA Women’s Wrestling Invitational. The national office announced on Wednesday that the invitational will be held on March 15-16, 2019.
The NAIA added women’s wrestling as an invitational sport beginning the 2018-2019 academic year after the National Administrative Council (NAC) unanimously approved the motion at the NAIA National Convention in Kansas City, Mo., in April 2018.
The NAIA is the first intercollegiate athletics association to officially recognize women’s wrestling.
“The NAIA is thrilled to have the University of Jamestown host the 2019 Women’s Wrestling National Invitational,” said Jim Carr, NAIA president and CEO. “This is a milestone event for women’s wrestling and we are confident that Jamestown will deliver an exceptional experience for student-athletes, coaches, and fans.”
“The University of Jamestown looks forward to hosting this tournament,” University of Jamestown President Dr. Polly Peterson said. “We have been committed to women’s wrestling for a decade and are pleased that it is now an NAIA sport. The University and the Jamestown community look forward to welcoming the athletes and their fans. The University is appreciative of the support and participation that it received from the community as we moved through the site selection process.”
Harold Newman Arena will be the site for the event. The $16 million building opened September 29, 2017, and has already been the host to a college conference basketball championship tournament, high school regional basketball game, and many state, local and regional events. The 61,000 square foot facility features a private meeting room overlooking the floor, which combined with the lobby, can seat 350 people. There are 8 locker rooms, two concession stands, a game day athletic training room and conference room.
“We are proud to host the first NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Invitational,” Jamestown Director of Athletics Sean Johnson said. “It’s a terrific opportunity to showcase Harold Newman Arena, our community and our state. This is the sixth NAIA wrestling national championship we’ve hosted here in Jamestown and one of the big reasons is our strong wrestling community. By hosting this event, we hope to grow women’s wrestling in our state and region.”
Harold Newman Arena is connected by a hallway to a brand new, state of the art athletic training center and the school’s 6,000 square foot wrestling room, recently renovated 5,500 square foot weight training center with adjacent locker room space.
Twenty-five NAIA institutions – including Jamestown — are anticipated to field women’s wrestling teams during the 2018-2019 season, up from 19 the year prior. Women’s wrestling will be eligible for championship status after two years of competition as an invitational sport, and 40 institutions sponsor a varsity women’s wrestling team.

It places an emphasis on providing character-driven athletics programs. TENNIS-US OPEN…
NEW YORK (AP) — American Madison Keys has advanced to another Grand Slam semifinal as she seeks her first major championship.
The 14th-seeded Keys faced only two break points and had a 22-10 edge in winners while completing a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro at the U.S. open. Keys appeared dominant at times in advancing to the semifinals for the third time in the last five Grand Slam events.
The 23-year-old Keys lost to Sloane Stephens in last year’s U.S. Open final.
Keys will take on Japan’s Naomi Osaka in Thursday’s semifinals. Osaka reached her first Grand Slam semifinal with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Lesia Tsurenko, a match that took just 57 minutes. Osaka raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set and then 4-0 in the second.
The shaky Tsurenko finished with more unforced errors than points in her first major quarterfinal.
Kei Nishikori (kay nee-shee-KOHR’-ee) moved into the men’s semifinals by beating No. 7 Marin Cilic (CHIH’-lihch). Nishikori dropped his opening set and was down 4-2 in the second before storming to a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 victory against Cilic. Nishikori had trouble closing out the 4-hour, 8-minute match, blowing a 4-1 lead in the fifth before winning the last two games.
According to the ATP, the wins by Osaka and Nishikori mark the first time Japan will have a men’s and women’s semifinalist at the same Grand Slam tournament.
Next up for Nishikori is sixth seed Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch), who concluded Wednesday’s play with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win against Australian John Millman. Phillips unloaded a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning to complete the Red Sox’s best comeback of the season, a 9-8 stunner in Atlanta. The newly-signed Boston infielder walked and scored in two previous plate appearances before launching his first big league home run since last Sept. 26 for the Angels against the White Sox.

Ohtani could have Tommy John surgery
UNDATED (AP) — Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) could require Tommy John surgery after new damage was discovered in his right elbow.
The team says surgery was recommended after an MRI Wednesday revealed the problem with his ulnar collateral ligament.
Ohtani returned to the mound last Sunday following a nearly two-month absence, but he lasted just 2 1/3 innings amid a drastic drop in velocity during the game.
The Japanese native was 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 51 2/3 innings over 10 starts this year. Ohtani is also batting .276 with 16 homers and 44 RBIs in 81 games as the Angels’ designated hitter.

He struggled upon his return, giving up runs in four consecutive outings while taking a loss and blowing two save opportunities.

Vikings…
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings will show off their shiny new quarterback Kirk Cousins in the season opener. The importance of the player directly in front of Cousins can’t be understated. Brett Jones will likely be making his debut with the Vikings at the same time. It comes two weeks after he was acquired in a trade with the Giants. Jones is in line to start at center against the 49ers with Pat Elflein still working his way back from injury.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The Jimmy Garoppolo that 49ers fans will see taking the field against Minnesota in the opener will be very different from the player who led the team down the stretch last year. Garoppolo has had months to learn the whys and hows of the Niners’ complex offense and his comfort level is expected to be much higher. Last season, Garoppolo got thrown into the lineup weeks after joining the 49ers and just getting a play off in time was an accomplishment.
