BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s largest business organization will campaign to help defeat a measure that would legalize recreational marijuana and another one aimed at ethics reform.Greater North Dakota Chamber President and CEO Arik Spencer says his organization is among a coalition of groups being assembled to fight the proposals.

Campaign filings list the chamber as the contact for committees opposing the measures that will be decided in November.

Measure 1 would ban foreign money from North Dakota elections, restrict lobbying and create an independent ethics commission, among other provisions.

Spencer says it would be difficult to comply with the measure because it is too broadly worded.

He says making marijuana legal would create many problems for businesses and employees.

The chamber has more than 1,000 members.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The case of a North Dakota woman who bled to death when a neighbor cut her baby girl from her womb will be replayed in court this week when a second suspect in her killing goes to trial.

The disappearance of 22-year-old Savanna Greywind in 2017 sparked vigils and searches before her body was found in the Red River near Fargo.

Brooke Crews pleaded guilty in Greywind’s death and was sentenced to life without parole. Now her boyfriend, William Hoehn, will be tried on a conspiracy charge that also could bring a life sentence.

Hoehn has admitted covering up Greywind’s death but says he had nothing to do with her killing.

Greywind’s death focused attention on what advocates say is an overlooked problem of violence against Native American women.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot officials say the city’s new initiative aimed at fixing blighted and vacant properties has successfully assisted in the sale of more than a dozen lots.

The Minot Daily News reports that the 15 properties in Neighbor Next Door were acquired by the city through various state grants received between 2013 and 2016. The lots include homes seriously damaged from the 2011 Souris River flood and for which property owners lacked the funds for rehabilitation.

John Zakian manages Minot’s Disaster Resilience Grant Program. He says the Federal Emergency Management Agency encourages cities that experienced flooding to promote programs that result in reducing damage from future flooding. He says Minot is using a proactive approach by promoting the Neighbor Next Door program, which doesn’t allow structures to be built on parcels.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A historical society has received several land offers to relocate a Minot museum that’s being evicted from the North Dakota State Fairgrounds.

The Minot Daily News reports that the Ward County Historical Society will evaluate the land offered as new locations for the Pioneer Village Museum. The society’s President David Leite says the cost of relocating could be reduced to about $1 million if land is donated.

The historical society lost a civil suit this summer against the State Fair Association, which wants the museum removed from the fairgrounds. A judge ruled that the association owns the land where the museum is situated. The historical group had long resisted moving the museum.

Some representatives have indicated that the association wants the museum relocated by June 1, 2019.
