Alta Wenaas, 89, died Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown, ND.

Alta Ann Stromberg was born June 28, 1929 at New Rockford, ND the daughter of David and Lura Stromberg. The family moved to Hope, ND where her father managed the Crane Johnson Lumber Yard. Alta was involved in band, drama, and sports while in school. She graduated from Hope High School in 1948. She married Donald Wenaas on June 13, 1948 and settled in Fargo where Don finished his education at the NDAC now NDSU. Their first child, Joyce was born January 27, 1950 in Mayville, ND. They moved to Hanlontown, Iowa where Don taught school. Sons, Larry and Hal were born in Iowa. They returned to North Dakota in 1955 when Don went to work for the City of Grand Forks as Asst. City Engineer. Alta remained a stay at home mom. They moved to Jamestown, ND when Don accepted the City Engineer position in that city. Alta became a volunteer at Central Dakota Nursing Home and subsequently was hired as the Activities Director and Volunteer Coordinator at that facility. This was a job she truly loved. Alta was a charter member of Atonement Lutheran Church, a choir member and Sunday school teacher. She was the vice-president of the ND Activity Directors Association. She was the past president of Hillcrest Women’s Golf Association and JCC Ladies Association. She was the past president of the Jamestown Women’s Bowling Association. She worked on the Civic Music campaign and the United Way board. After retirement, she served on The Heritage Centre board. In 1980, she was chosen “The Outstanding Woman of the Year” by the James River Business and Professional Women.

She loved sports. She was an avid golfer and bowler. Her coffee group “The Little Red Hens” were a spunky bunch of women who loved to laugh. Alta loved watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports and perform in their bands and orchestras. She followed the Jamestown High School and University of Jamestown sports teams. She was a Twins and Vikings fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Lura Stromberg, her husband of 63 years, Don, her brothers, Roy, Reid, Warren, Morris “Max” and Lewis, her sisters Ione, Myrt and Betty Jean.

Alta is survived by her children, Joyce (Dwaine) Heinrich, Jamestown, ND; Larry (Jan) Wenaas, Dilworth, MN and Hal (Mary Jane) Wenaas, Litchfield, MN; grandchildren Troy (Wenda) LeFevre, Jamestown, ND, David Wenaas, Minneapolis, MN, Crystal (Justin) Hagen, Coon Rapids, MN and Hannah Wenaas, Prior Lake, MN; seven great-grandchildren, Grace, Isabel, Luke, Elena, Michael, Zoe and Alice. She is also survived by one sister, Kitty Stromberg, Lake Fenton, MI and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to Ave Marie Village, The Heritage Centre, JRMC Hospice or donor’s choice.

Visitation: 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, September 21 at Williams Funeral Home, Jamestown, ND.

Funeral Service: 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 22 at New Hope Free Lutheran Church, Jamestown, ND with Pastor Steve Berntson officiating.

Burial: Highland Home Cemetery.
