Thursday in Men’s Soccer: Briar Cliff shut down University of Jamestown, 2 to 0
Jamestown (uj.edu) The Briar Cliff (Iowa) Chargers scored twice in the first 19 minutes of Thursday’s match, sending the University of Jamestown men’s soccer team to a 2-0 defeat at the Jimmie Turf Field.
The duo of Rodrigo Oliveira and Prichard Sibanda was responsible for both Charger scores. In the ninth minute, Oliveira took a chip pass from Sibanda and beat the Jimmie keeper for a 1-0 lead.
In the 19th minute, the players reversed roles, this time with SIbanda taking a pass from Oliveira and nearly duplicating the previous goal. BCU went into the halftime break up 2-0.
Neither team scored in the second half, although the JImmies did have three shots on goal. Lloyd van Wees (SO/Akersloot, Netherlands), Eric Fairtlough (SO/Varese, Italy), and Alex Castillo (SO/Mesa, Ariz.) had the shots for UJ.
Jake Askew (JR/Rotherham, England) had five saves for Jamestown, now 4-7-1 overall and 3-4-0 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play. Briar Cliff improves to 6-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the GPAC.
UJ travels to Doane (Neb.) Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
