Jamestown  (NDFU)– The state’s largest farm organization announced Monday that it has launched a Vote Family Farm initiative to educate voters on critical ag issues and the candidates who support family farm agriculture.

“Family farming is essential to our state’s economy and communities,” said North Dakota Farmers Union President Mark Watne. “We’re facing a lot of adversity right now in agriculture, but there are opportunities we could be seizing upon if farm-friendly legislators were elected.”

Watne said the organization has launched a votefamilyfarms.com website to help voters better understand agricultural issues and candidate positions, including positions on the state’s anti-corporate farming law. NDFU members successfully referred legislation that was passed in the 2015 session that would have weakened the law, allowing corporate ownership of land for swine and dairy operations.

The vote of incumbent legislators on SB 2351, which attempted to create the corporate exemption, is posted on the votefamilyfarms.com website.

“Each of us has a responsibility to participate in our democracy at the ballot box,” said Watne. “Our goal is to help citizens make an educated vote and elect leaders that will actually support family farm agriculture once elected.”

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Police say a woman has been arrested after a man was stabbed at a Fargo hotel.

Officers responded to the Woodspring Suites about 1:30 p.m. Sunday where they found a man with a non-life threatening stab wound to his forearm.

KFGO says a 41-year-old Fargo woman was arrested for possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Charges of aggravated assault are pending.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The former treasurer of the University of North Dakota Student Government has been sentenced to two years of probation and 150 hours of community service for embezzling from his fraternity.

Twenty-three-year-old Chase Johnson, of Fargo, was charged in March with felony theft for stealing from the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, where he also had served as treasurer. He pleaded guilty earlier this month and paid nearly $27,000 in restitution.

Johnson also was ordered to pay $800 in fees. If he violates terms of his probation, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

(AP) — A 12-year-old boy has been cited in juvenile court for allegedly attacking a Mandan school bus driver.Authorities say the boy intervened in a dispute between his mother and the 73-year-old driver on Wednesday morning. FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Heidi Heitkamp squeezed dozens of hands and posed for pictures with college students at North Dakota State University recently, bubbling with characteristic exuberance that belied the Democratic senator’s uncertain future.

“I want everybody to just do something for me,” Heitkamp said, her voice hoarse. “Everybody stand up! I want you to reach as high as you can. Now, I want you to reach about six inches higher. That’s what we’ve got to do to win! We’ve got to go higher.”

An already tenuous bid for a second term has taken on new urgency for Heitkamp since she voted against Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. Heitkamp is scrambling to find her footing amid fears that the race against Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer is slipping away, and with it Democrats’ slim hopes of a Senate majority.

“Are we facing some headwinds? Yep,” Heitkamp said in an Associated Press interview. “But I’ve faced headwinds before, and won.”

Heitkamp has been betting for months that her image as an independent collaborator — someone who could go along with President Donald Trump, but challenge him when needed — could carry her to another term in GOP-heavy North Dakota.

Trailing in polls, including her own campaign’s, with three weeks until Election Day, Heitkamp plans to essentially camp out in North Dakota, especially its more politically independent eastern side.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s capital city is updating its strategic plan, a tool the city uses to identify future goals and the steps needed to achieve them.

The “Imagine Bismarck” process is being handled by consultant JDGray Group. CEO Jason Gray recently told city commissioners that it’s better to make decisions “strategically rather than just reacting to whatever comes at you.”

“The idea behind the strategic plan is to be intentional with your resources — being time, money, energy and effort — as well as aligning those resources to try and make sure they continually move you toward your vision,” he said.

As part of the project, residents are being asked to take an online survey. Nearly 500 people have already done so, according to The Bismarck Tribune.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota landowners who unsuccessfully sued the developer of the Dakota Access oil pipeline for allegedly underpaying for land easements are maintaining that not all of their claims should have been thrown out by a federal judge.

Attorneys for the 21 landowners are scheduled to take their argument before an 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Thursday. They want the case sent back to federal court in North Dakota to resolve at least some of the claims.

The landowners sued in January 2017, alleging a company formed by Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners and a hired land acquisition consulting business used deception to acquire private land easements for the $3.8 billion pipeline built to move North Dakota oil to Illinois. They sought more than $4 million in damages.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland a year ago sided with the defendants. He ruled that the landowners had failed to prove their claims, in part because fraud-based claims under federal court rules require a higher standard of proof. Hovland said the plaintiffs “clearly failed to specifically allege who made the fraudulent statements, when the statements were made, and to whom the statements were made.”

The landowners in their appeal maintain that not all of their claims were based on alleged fraud.

OAKES, N.D. (AP) — High school students in southeastern North Dakota now have an opportunity to get some chef training before they graduate. Most of the center’s students are from Oakes, but it also serves the Ellendale, Forman and Gwinner school districts.
