Jamestown (UJ) University of Jamestown is adding Italian to its foreign language offerings. Students, as well as community members, are welcome to register.
Italian 101 will be offered in the 2019 spring semester, followed by Italian 102 in the fall. Italian 201 will also be held in the spring of 2019 and 2020. Anyone in the community is welcome to register for the Italian 101 class; no previous foreign language experience is required. The class will be held on the University of Jamestown campus on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 – 10:50 a.m. and is worth three credits.
Alexandru Lefter, Assistant Professor of Foreign Language, says, “Italian is a niche language, one that is strongly associated with art, history, and gastronomy. It affords students a chance to explore a rich cultural heritage. It is also a good fit for students who have mastered the basics of another Romance language, such as Spanish or French, since it allows students to develop a comparative understanding of Romance linguistics, as well as developing proficiency in the languages.”
For information on how to register for Italian 101, please email admission@uj.edu.
The Department of Foreign Language currently offers majors in French, German, and Spanish, requiring a combination of on-campus coursework and advanced language study in a study abroad program or US-based language immersion program. Minors are also available in French, German, Spanish, and Italian Studies.

Update…
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota man was sentenced Monday to life in prison for conspiring to kidnap a baby that his girlfriend had cut from their neighbor’s body and lying to police about it.
William Hoehn, 33, was found not guilty last month of conspiracy to commit murder in the August 2017 death of 22-year-old Savanna Greywind of Fargo. Brooke Crews admitted that she sliced Greywind’s baby from her womb and is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole in that killing.
Hoehn denied knowing anything about Crews’ plan to kill Greywind and take her baby. But he admitted to hiding the newborn and giving false information to law enforcement to cover up the crime.
Hoehn had faced a maximum 21 years behind bars on the conspiracy and lying counts, but Judge Tom Olson on Monday granted prosecutors’ request to label Hoehn a dangerous offender, enhancing his maximum sentence to life with the possibility of parole.
Crews testified during Hoehn’s trial that she concocted a phony pregnancy because she was afraid of losing him, and that when he figured out she was lying, he told her she needed to produce a baby. Crews said she took that as an ultimatum.
Crews said she never explicitly told Hoehn what she planned to do, but she also said that when he arrived home to find a newborn and a bleeding Greywind, he twisted a rope around Greywind’s neck to make sure she was dead. A coroner was unable to determine if the cause of death was strangulation or blood loss.
Greywind’s body was found several days after she was killed, shrouded in plastic and dumped in the Red River.
The mother of a North Dakota woman who was killed and had her baby cut from her womb says she hopes a man convicted in the case never gets out of prison.
Norberta Greywind says she doesn’t think Hoehn should ever walk free.
Hoehn’s ex-girlfriend, Brooke Crews, pleaded guilty in Greywind’s death earlier and is serving life in prison without parole.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota began accepting applications Monday from residents for medical marijuana cards, two years after voters approved the drug.
Applications also opened for designated caregivers, or people who help patients, such as a family member or friend. Both patients and caregivers must pay a $50 annual fee and meet certain requirements, including doctor or registered nurse certification for patients and a criminal background check for caregivers.
The Health Department expects to begin issuing registry cards in December, around the time a marijuana manufacturing facility in Bismarck anticipates having product available.
The state estimates that as many as 4,000 people will legally be using the drug three years from now. That’s based on the experience in Delaware, which North Dakota officials have cited as a model.
“One of the major milestones in implementing the medical marijuana program has now been accomplished,” said Jason Wahl, director of the department’s Medical Marijuana Division.
North Dakota voters approved the drug in November 2016 , and lawmakers crafted a law in 2017 that allows its use for 17 medical conditions, along with terminal illnesses.
The Health Department has endured some criticism over the amount of time it is taking to make the drug available, though the timeline isn’t unusual when compared to other states with the drug, according to the advocacy group Americans for Safe Access.
North Dakota has used a phased-in approach modeled after other states that have set up medical marijuana programs.
The state earlier this year selected companies to implement a monitoring system and to perform laboratory testing . It recently named companies to open dispensaries in Fargo and Bismarck , the state’s two largest cities, and expects to select companies by late November to open dispensaries in Grand Forks and Williston. Applications are to open in January for dispensaries in Devils Lake, Dickinson, Jamestown and Minot. All eight dispensaries are expected to be operating by next July.
