Jamestown (JRMC)   — Men’s health below the belt can make a person squeamish, but ignoring symptoms can have a devastating effect.

Jamestown Regional Medical Center, urologist, Dr. Robert Bates says, “Silence can be our worst enemy. Talking about these issues and seeing a specialist are the necessary steps to below-the-belt health.”

To start those hairy conversations, Jamestown Regional Medical Center is holding a #GROWvember beard-growing contest. The contest runs through Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Misinformation about men’s health issues is abundant, Dr. Bates said, in part because it’s so private.

Important questions you ‘mustache’ yourself: How often do you go to the bathroom? When you go, is it urgent? Do you have blood in your urine?

Dr. Bates adds, various treatment options are available locally. Patients can self-refer, meaning they don’t have to visit their primary physician first. They can make an appointment directly at JRMC. That cuts down on embarrassing conversations.

The #GROWvember contest is free to grow and $10 per beard to compete for prizes. Prizes awarded include but are not limited to: Longest beard, Best Styled Beard, Best Mustache and Cashiest ‘Stache. All proceeds benefit JRMC’s upcoming Cancer Center.

A special event to announce the winners is set for Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Shady’s Restaurant & Lounge. The event begins with a social at 5 p.m. followed by awards at 6 p.m. Tickets area available in advance for $10 or at the door for $15. Tickets include appetizers and a beverage. A full list of rules is available at www.jrmcnd.com/growvember.

Let’s move from embarrassed to empowered.

Jamestown  (NDFU)  The unveiling of a Family Farms chopper, designed and built by Paul Teutul, Jr., of Paul Jr. Designs, will take center stage at the North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) state convention on Friday, Dec. 14, in Bismarck. The creation of the motorcycle and its reveal will be featured on an episode of “American Chopper,” a Discovery Channel television show.

NDFU President Mark Watne, says, “Consumer education about the value of family farm agriculture is a standing priority for our organization. As farmers, we understand that America’s family farm system of food production is the best in the world. We want consumers to understand that, too, and one way to grab their attention is through national branding and messaging, exactly what Paul Teutul, Jr. will deliver.”

The chopper, which is being built in Orange County, N.Y., will be transported to North Dakota for the reveal at the Bismarck Event Center in front of some 800 Farmers Union members expected to be in attendance. No one, not even Watne, will see the motorcycle beforehand and no videos or photos of the bike will be posted until the American Chopper episode airs.

Paul Jr., says, “I appreciate Farmers Union completely trusting me with their brand.I know it’s a leap of faith. My goal is to mold the family farms message into a work of art that people will want to see. Ultimately, they’ll learn more about Farmers Union and the importance of family farm agriculture.”

Watne said the bike will run on E30 as Farmers Union “continues to work to create demand for corn and higher blends of ethanol to support commodity prices.”

The public is invited to the reveal, but must register first for the convention at 1-800-366-8331.

Hankinson  (NDHP) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol has identified the driver of a car who died after crashing into a tractor in Richland County, four miles north of Hankinson, on October 23.

The Patrol has identified the man as 59 year old Jeffrey Schlitz of Hankinson.

The patrol says his 2004 Chevrolet Impala was southbound on Richland County 1, shortly after sunset, when it met a northbound John Deere tractor towing a disc plow and coil packer. As the Impala passed the tractor, it struck the front of the disc plow. The Impala had extensive damage to the top. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 18-year-old man driving the tractor wasn’t seriously injured.

The crash remains under investigation.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — The mother of a 12-year-old boy cited in juvenile court for allegedly attacking a school bus driver in Mandan has now been charged in the case.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that 36-year-old Megan Rosario Hernandez of Bismarck was charged Monday with felony tampering with a public service and misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

Authorities say the boy intervened in a dispute between his mother and the 73-year-old driver on Oct. 10. Police say the boy kicked the man several times in the chest, and the mother pushed the driver. The man also suffered a cut chin and bloody mouth.

The boy was charged earlier with simple assault, disorderly conduct, trespassing, and tampering or damaging a public service.

Rosario Hernandez appeared in court Tuesday but didn’t enter pleas.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota U.S. Senate candidates Heidi Heitkamp and Kevin Cramer are enlisting some high-profile help from their respective parties, while also planning a flurry of appearances across the state in the last full week of their long, expensive and contentious campaign.

The race between the two has been among the most watched nationally because Republicans are counting on a Cramer victory to help them keep control of the Senate. Heitkamp, who is seeking her second term, is seen as one of the most vulnerable Senators among red-state Democrats.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Spirit Lake Sioux tribe on Tuesday sued the state of North Dakota over its voting identification requirements, part of a larger effort to ensure American Indians can vote in next week’s election in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in a similar lawsuit filed by another tribe.

To cast a ballot, voters in North Dakota need identification with a provable street address — something that’s hard to come by on reservations. The state maintains everyone has a street address via the statewide 911 system, but the lawsuit filed by the Native American Rights Fund, the Campaign Legal Center and two law firms argues the system is “incomplete, contradictory and prone to error on reservations.”

“State policies should be designed to make it easier for all citizens to vote, but North Dakota’s voter ID law disenfranchises Native Americans living on reservations,” said Danielle Lang, senior attorney with the Campaign Legal Center.

The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court seeks to have the street address requirement ruled unconstitutional.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota Highway Patrol trooper was taken to a hospital after being struck by a vehicle while helping direct traffic as cattle crossed a road in McKenzie County on Monday evening. Authorities say a pickup truck hit two vehicles at the scene and then struck the trooper. He was taken to a Watford City hospital with unspecified injuries. The pickup driver also was injured, and might face charges.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Rae Ann Kelsch, who served in the North Dakota Legislature for 22 years, has died. She was 58. Alex Kelsch says his mother died early Tuesday morning at a New Orleans hospital from a bacterial infection caused by eating raw oysters at a restaurant there.

VALLEY CITY  (Vikings.com)   Valley City State and Mayville State went the distance Tuesday night as the Comet volleyball team played its way to a five-set victory over the Vikings.

Valley City State dominated set one, winning 25-16, but the Comets came back with close wins in sets two and three by scores of 25-22 and 29-27. In set four, VCSU again decisively outplayed the Comets en route to a 25-14 victory but Mayville State struck the last blow with a 15-10 win in the decisive set. The teams were tied 9-9 in the fifth set before Mayville State scored four straight points to go up 13-9. The Comets would finish the match with a big block by Cassidy Miller.

Mayville State entered the night in a three-way tie for sixth in the NSAA standings, which is the last spot to make the NSAA Postseason Tournament. With Tuesday’s victory, the Comets move a half-game ahead of Waldorf University and Presentation College for the sixth spot in the standings.

Clarissa Olson racked up 22 kills Tuesday night to lead the Vikings. The senior middle hit .463 in the match and added seven digs and seven total blocks. The Vikings were more aggressive at the serving line, finishing with nine aces – including four by Juarez – and 15 serving errors. College Women’s Basketball…

MITCHELL, S.D.  (vikings.com)   – The Valley City State women’s basketball team rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to take a late lead on the defending national champions Tuesday night, but the Vikings could not hold off Dakota Wesleyan down the stretch.

Dierra Diegel‘s 3-pointer gave the No. 16-ranked Vikings a 51-49 lead with 2:33 remaining, but No. 2-ranked Dakota Wesleyan finished the game with an 11-4 run to pick up a 60-55 victory.

Valley City State drops to 1-1 overall this season. Tuesday was the season opener for the Tigers, who won last year’s NAIA Division II National Championship.

Dakota Wesleyan led 17-14 after an entertaining first quarter Tuesday, and then built a 31-20 halftime lead and a 40-30 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Vikings came storming back in the fourth, scoring on their first four possessions as part of an 11-0 run to take a 41-40 advantage. It was VCSU’s first lead since going up 8-7 less than two minutes into the game.

The Tigers tied the game at 41-41 on a free throw with 5:53 remaining, and from there the battle was on. The teams were tied at 43-43 and 45-45 before Hannah Schlecht gave the Vikings a 48-47 lead on a 3-pointer with 3:20 to go. After Dakota Wesleyan went up 49-48 with two free throws, Diegel hit her 3-pointer for a 51-49 Viking lead.

It was the last lead the Vikings would have. Dakota Wesleyan’s Rylie Osthus scored the next eight points – including six on free throws – to propel the Tigers to the 60-55 victory.

Valley City State shot 35 percent overall (18-51), 29 percent on 3’s (5-17) and 74 percent at the line (14-19). The Tigers finished at 38 percent overall (18-48), 18 percent on 3’s (2-11) and 88 percent at the line (22-25).

NBA-ALL-STAR GAME

Cleveland to get 2022 ASG as coaching, injury issues swirl

UNDATED (AP) — A person familiar with the decision says the Cleveland Cavaliers have been selected by the NBA to host the 2022 All-Star Game at Quicken Loans Arena, which is receiving a massive renovation. Cleveland last hosted the event in 1997, when the league honored its Top 50 players.

The official announcement is expected later this week.

Crain’s Cleveland Business first reported the Cavs’ selection.

That’s the good basketball news in Cleveland, but there are a couple of downers.

Interim coach Larry Drew says he’s “very disappointed” the Cavs have not yet restructured his contract. Drew has been asked to fill in as head coach on an interim basis since Tyronn Lue was fired on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers will be without All-Star forward Kevin Love for a significant amount of time with a toe injury that has bothered him since preseason. He’s making only 32 percent of his shots while averaging 19.0 points and 13.5 rebounds.

Seven-time All-Star Chris Sale will be back to help the Boston Red Sox try to defend their World Series championship.

The Red Sox have exercised their 2019 option on the left-hander, who will earn $15 in the final season of the five-year contract he signed with the White Sox. He can become an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

The 29-year-old started Game 1 of the World Series and closed out the Fall Classic with three strikeouts in the ninth inning of Boston’s 5-1 win over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Texans get WR Thomas from Broncos

UNDATED (AP) — Demariyus Thomas will be playing in Sunday’s Broncos-Texans game at Denver, but he’ll be on the visiting sideline.

Houston has acquired the five-time Pro Bowl selection from the Broncos for a fourth-round pick in the 2019 draft and a swap of seventh-round selections. Broncos general manager John Elway says the rise of Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton and Tim Patrick made it easier to make the deal.

FOOTBALL PLAYER-MURDER PLOT

Rutgers player charged in New Jersey in alleged murder plot

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Prosecutors in New Jersey say a Rutgers University football player has been charged in connection with an alleged plot to commit murder.

Middlesex County prosecutors say that 22-year-old Izaia Bullock of Piscataway has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and conspiracy.

Prosecutors allege that Bullock on Monday “initiated a plot to murder the family members of an acquaintance.” They said the alleged intended victims aren’t affiliated with the university.

A university representative said Bullock, a junior linebacker from Linden, has been dismissed from the team and the university is initiating disciplinary proceedings.

Bullock is being held at the county jail pending an initial court appearance in New Brunswick. It’s unclear whether he has an attorney.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says that his talk of tent cities for asylum seekers, sending U.S. troops to the Mexican border and the end to the Constitution’s guarantee of birthright citizenship has nothing to do with next week’s elections. But Trump and many top aides have long seen the immigration issue as the most effective rallying cry for his base of supporters. GOP Rep. Steve King of Iowa says Trump is deftly seizing on an issue that’s sure to help in the midterms.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — The head of the National Transportation Safety Committee, Soerjanto Tjahjono, says pings detected at sea in the search for a crashed Lion Air plane are definitely from its flight recorder because of their regular pattern. He said other possibilities have been eliminated because the pings occur at intervals of just under 1 second. The 2-month-old Boeing 737 MAX 8 plunged into the Java Sea on Monday just 13 minutes after takeoff from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s top court has acquitted a Christian woman who was sentenced to death on blasphemy charges in 2010, a landmark ruling that sparked protests by hard-line Islamists and raised fears of violence.
