Valley City (WDAY) – A candidate for Barnes County State’s Attorney said she’s shocked and angry after opening a package mailed to her home that was filled with feces.

Lilie Schoenack tracked the package, an found it came through a legitimate website, that allows individuals to send  feces filled packages to people. The site makes senders promise it’s just a “gag gift” and not being used to harass or threaten anyone.

But with the election just five days away, this candidate isn’t laughing, she said she felt both harassed and threatened.

Schoenack tells WDAY, “There’s no reason whatsoever to believe it’s anything but that, so it’s just troubling to me that people are capable of this.  It’s just sort of a metaphor or symbol of the way this whole election has gone.”

She’ll consider pursuing legal action with a U.S. state attorney.

Schoenack is being opposed in the State’s Attorney’s race by Tonya Duffy.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown Kiwanis Club is excited to be holding their eighth food packing event for Kids Against Hunger and look forward to the opportunity to feed starving families across the region. Since the Kiwanis Club started the project they have packed over 1.1 million meals for those in need.

Once again, they are partnering with the Great Plains Food Bank to distribute the meals to those in need across North Dakota and parts of Western Minnesota.  In 2017 Great Plains Food Bank used up their donation of 100,000 meals within six months.

Jamestown Kiwanis Club board member, Tim Perkins says, “Food stamps only go so far.  We do this for the kids. Every year, when we talk about hungry children, Kiwanis says ‘we won’t stand for that.’ And every year, the community supports us. Jamestown is a kind and generous community.”

On a recent, Wayne Byers Show, on CSi Cable 2, Jamestown Kiwanis Club member Michelle Watne said, the next packing event is Saturday, November 3, from 9-a.m., to 12-noon, at Stutsman Harley Davidson in Jamestown, with the goal to pack another 80,000 meals.  Each meal costs only 25¢, so gifts small or large make a big difference.

The meals of soy, rice, dehydrate vegetables, containing 21 essential vitamins are distributed throughout North Dakota and Minnesota through the Great Plains Food Bank.

Families need only to add boiling water to make the meal.

Donations can be made at First Community Credit Union, on the Jamestown Kiwanis Facebook page,  www.Facebook.com/JamestownKiwanis or email JamestownKiwnais@gmail.com.   www.gofundme.com/kids-against-hunger-2018, or directly to any Kiwanis member.

The Kiwanis greatly appreciates donation, and so will the families that you’re helping to feed.

Those unable to donate funds for the food, may consider donating their time. Approximately 300 volunteers will be needed to help package the meals.

The Kiwanis Club thanks Stutsman Harley Davidson for sharing their space with for the packaging event, yet again. AND to those that have already generously donated or volunteered to feed hungry families.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo woman is charged with child neglect after authorities say she left her baby alone in a hot SUV while she shopped.

Court documents accuse Clara Nissko of leaving the child for 20 minutes in 84-degree weather in September while she was in Walmart in Fargo.

KXMB-TV reports police were called after several people heard the baby crying and found the infant strapped in a car seat. Witnesses say one window of the vehicle was partially opened.

Passers-by took the baby out of the vehicle while they waiting for police to arrive. It’s not clear whether Nissko has hired an attorney.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden kicked off Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s final statewide campaign tour Thursday in a whisper instead of his usual fiery tone, making a quiet call for civility that was accentuated by laryngitis.

Biden’s first order of business in front of a few hundred people at the Fargo Air Museum was to apologize for his hushed delivery. He then proceeded to outline countrywide problems that he said have been worsened by the “lack of dignity in the national dialogue.”

Biden said, Heitkamp has remarkable courage and fierce independence and is needed in Washington to help foster bipartisanship

Heitkamp and a number of democratic candidates stopped by the Jamestown Civic Center Thursday evening.  Joining the speakers was former Senator, Kent Conrad, and former Congressman Earl Pomeroy.

Heitkamp, who is seen as trailing in her re-election campaign against Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer, plans more than 20 stops in towns across North Dakota. The five-day trip is being billed as the “Bring it Home Heidi” tour.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday denied a request from an American Indian tribe in North Dakota to block the state’s voter ID law just days before the election.

North Dakota’s law requires voters to show ID with a residential street address, which American Indians have argued is not always evident on reservations.

The Spirit Lake Sioux tribe sued the state Tuesday seeking a temporary restraining order, saying the street address requirement is unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland wrote that the allegations gave him “great cause for concern” but that he was denying the motion because it would cause confusion so close to the election.

“The federal courts are unanimous in their judgment that it is highly important to preserve the status quo when elections are fast approaching,” Hovland wrote.

The state maintains everyone has a street address via the statewide 911 system, but the lawsuit filed by the Native American Rights Fund, the Campaign Legal Center and two law firms argues the system is “incomplete, contradictory and prone to error on reservations.”

Men’s Soccer…

GPAC Tournament Quarter Finals

Thursday

SIOUX CITY, Iowa  (uj.edu) — Two first-half goals by Morningside (Iowa) College were too much for the University of Jamestown men’s soccer team to overcome as the Jimmies lost 2-0 Thursday evening in the quarterfinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament.

Jamestown’s season ends with an overall record of 7-8-2. Morningside, now 12-5-1 overall, advance to the semifinals and will face Briar Cliff (Iowa) on Tuesday, November 6.

Austin Lingle’s free kick in the 15th minute put the Mustangs ahead 1-0. Moritz Lusch made it 2-0 in the 26th minute on a nifty give-and-go play with Murat Turin.

Down two goals with just under twenty minutes in the half, the Jimmies turned up the offensive pressure. UJ had five shots in the next six minutes, but only one on goal. Two shots went wide while the other two were blocked by Morningside defenders.

In the 56th minute, Ruben Zepeda (SO/Puebla, Mexico) had a chance to go for goal, but his shot was saved by Tim Erdmann. Alex Castillo (SO/Mesa, Ariz.) had a chance to get UJ on the board in the 87th, but his header hit the post. Over the final three-and-a-half minutes, the Jimmies tallied four more shots but could not find a goal.

Shots ended 23-20 in favor of Jamestown while shots on goal were 9-8, Morningside.

Jake Askew (JR/Rotherham, England) had five saves for the Jimmies.

The undrafted free agent delivered with the most productive debut for an NFL quarterback since the 1970 merger.Mullens completed 16 of his 22 passes for 262 yards, three touchdowns and a 151.9 passer rating as the Niners blasted the Raiders, 34-3. He threw TD passes to Pierre Garcon and Kendrick Bourne on the opening two drives and coasted to the most lopsided win in this series since San Francisco won the first meeting, 38-7 in 1970.Mullens got the nod after C.J. Beathard (BETH’-urd) injured his right wrist last weekend. He made the most of his opportunity against one of the league’s worst defenses. The Niners are 2-7 after ending a six-game losing streak. The Raiders are 1-7 and tied with the Giants for the NFL’s worst record.

Juancho Hernangomez scored 23 points, one day after Denver picked up the option on his rookie contract. Jordan Clarkson had a team-high 17 points for the Cavaliers, who are 1-7 overall and 1-1 under acting coach Larry Drew.

NBA-NEWS

JR Smith wants trade

UNDATED (AP) — Unhappy with his new role, J.R. Smith says he hopes the Cleveland Cavaliers trade him.

The 33-year-old guard didn’t play in Tuesday night’s win over Atlanta, the Cavs’ first game since coach Tyronn Lue was fired. The Cavs are rebuilding with a young roster, and Smith is one of just three players left from Cleveland’s 2016 title team.

Smith has had a rocky relationship with Cleveland fans. Some love his care-free spirit while others still blame him for losing track of the score in the closing seconds of Game 1 in last year’s NBA Finals.

In other NBA news:

— Dwight Howard is scheduled to make his Wizards debut Friday at home against the Thunder. Howard missed all of training camp, the preseason and the first seven games of the regular season because of a sore backside. — The Grizzlies have waived Andrew Harrison after playing the guard only once this season. The 6-foot-6 Harrison started 64 of 129 games since being drafted out of Kentucky in the 2016 draft, averaging 7.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 21.7 minutes.

In world and national news…

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — An often-overlooked battle is under way across rural and working-class America where President Donald Trump’s coalition of blue-collar voters offers Democrats an alternate route to the House majority. Specifically, they’re targeting 21 House districts carried by President Barack Obama in 2012 that shifted to Trump in 2016 _ districts now testing the strength of a Trump-era political realignment shaped by education, race and gender. With the election days away, Democrats have cause for optimism.WASHINGTON (AP) — The legality of an order President Trump plans to sign next week that could lead to the large-scale detention of migrants crossing the southern border could be challenged. Trump’s proposal could also bar anyone caught crossing illegally from claiming asylum. His announcement marked Trump’s latest attempt to keep immigration front-and-center in the final stretch before next Tuesday’s elections. Trump has been using the issue to try to energize Republican voters.PHOENIX (AP) — Third party candidates, or “spoilers” as they are known, have been a concern to the major parties in the run up to election day on Tuesday. Some experts say it shouldn’t be that big a worry since many voters for third party candidates wouldn’t otherwise show up to the polls to pick between Democrats and Republicans. But major party officials are still concerned that in tight races, third party candidates can make the difference by drawing away voters from Republicans or Democrats.PITTSBURGH (AP) — Friday was to mark the end of a wrenching series of funerals for the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre. Ninety-seven-year old Rose Mallinger, the oldest of the 11 victims, was being laid to rest. Her daughter was wounded in the attack at Tree of Life synagogue. The suspect has pleaded not guilty to federal charges that could result in a death sentence.MIAMI (AP) — Prosecutors said they would ask on Friday that the man accused of sending pipe bombs to prominent Democrats and opponents of President Donald Trump be held in custody until his trial. A bail hearing was scheduled for 56-year-old Cesar Sayoc and federal prosecutors planned to cite the magnitude of the charges and the strong evidence against him in arguing against his release. None of the bombs exploded.
